Dose-Linear Energy Transfer Interactions Predict Capsular Contracture After Proton Postmastectomy Radiation Therapy.

PURPOSE: Pencil beam scanning proton therapy enables highly conformal dose distributions and is increasingly used for postmastectomy radiation therapy (PMRT) to reduce cardiopulmonary exposure. However, implant-based reconstruction (IBR) in the setting of PMRT remains susceptible to capsular contracture, and the potential contribution of elevated linear energy transfer (LET) in pencil beam scanning has not been well characterized. This study aimed to investigate the combined effects of dose-LET and dose-averaged LET on capsular contracture after proton PMRT and to derive preliminary, explorato

Fly motion vision maximizes signal energy transfer between mechanical input and sensor output.

Insects achieve agile flight using a sensor-rich control architecture whose embodiment eliminates the need for complex computation. For example, their visual systems are tuned to detect the optic flow associated with specific self-motions, but what functional principle does this tuning embed, and how does it facilitate motor control? Here, we tested the hypothesis that evolution cotunes physics and physiology by aligning an insect's sensors to its dynamically important modes of self-motion. Specifically, we show that the spatial tuning of the blowfly motion vision system maximizes the open-loo

Co-Assembled Helical Polymer Nanofibers Enable Efficient CO2 Photoreduction Through Interchain Energy Transfer.

One-dimensional (1D) nanofibers have shown bright prospects for artificial CO2 photoreduction but still face formidable challenge in achieving high performance. Herein, a series of polymer nanofibers are prepared via the helical co-assembly of chiral poly{1,2-bis(4-ethynylphenyl)-1,2-diphenylethene-co-(S)-dinaphtho[2,1-d:1',2'-f][1,3]dioxepine} (P1) and poly[(9,9'-dioctylfluorenyl-2,7-diyl)-co-4,7-di(2-thienyl)-2,1,3-benzothiadiazole] (P2) using interchain energy transfer strategy. The helical nanostructure arranged through intermolecularly layered packing endows the polymer nanofibers with ex

Resolving Energy Transfer Dynamics at the Quantum Dot Gels-Perylene Diimide Hybrid Interface.

Semiconductor-molecular hybrids provide a platform for controlling excited-state transfer in photocatalysis and optoelectronics. While quantum dots (QDs) are promising semiconductors, they are often capped with surface ligands that limit accessibility and hinder coupling with molecular species. QD gels are a porous three-dimensional network of QDs that can address the limitations of QDs, making them especially advantageous for semiconductor-molecular hybrid systems; however, excited-state transfer dynamics remain largely unexplored. Here, we report energy transfer dynamics from a CdS QD gel to

Bioelectronic Photocommutator to Regulate Extracellular Electron Transfer Circuits for Microbial Photovoltaic Energy Storage.

Precise control over bioelectronic circuits is crucial for advancing bioelectrochemical systems, yet achieving dynamic, external regulation of electron flow has remained a fundamental challenge. Here, we create a biotic-abiotic hybrid system where the biosynthesized cadmium sulfide quantum dots (CdS QDs) are interfaced with the extracellular electron transfer (EET) pathway of Shewanella oneidensis MR-1, forming a bioelectronic photocommutator. This biotic-abiotic hybrid enables light-dependent, bidirectional control of electron transfer. Under 405 nm illumination, the system enhances outward E

Bioluminescence Resonance Energy Transfer (BRET)-Mediated Protein Release from Self-Illuminating Photoresponsive Biomaterials.

Phototriggered release of various cargos, including soluble protein factors and small molecules, has the potential to correct aberrant biological events by offering spatiotemporal control over local therapeutic levels. However, the poor penetration depth of light historically limits implementation to subdermal regions, necessitating alternative methods of light delivery to achieve the full potential of photodynamic therapeutic release. Here, we introduce a strategy exploiting bioluminescence resonance energy transfer (BRET)-an energy transfer process between light-emitting Nanoluciferase (NLuc

Intermolecular energy transfer-enhanced super-broadband stimulated Raman scattering in cyclohexane-benzene mixtures.

Supercontinuum radiation has found numerous applications in diverse fields encompassing spectroscopy, pulse compression, and tunable laser sources. Anomalous enhanced stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) of cyclohexane-benzene mixtures was obtained in this study. SRS of the pure solvent, the multi-order Stokes of the strongest fundamental vibration modes, and energy transfer in intra-molecular modes were observed. SRS of the mixture revealed that the cross-pumping effect was generated between the C-H stretching (v2) mode of cyclohexane and the C=C ring skeleton (v1) mode of benzene, thereby produ

Orthogonal luminescence lifetime encoding by intermetallic energy transfer in heterometallic rare-earth MOFs.

Lifetime-encoded materials are particularly attractive as optical tags, however examples are rare and hindered in practical application by complex interrogation methods. Here, we demonstrate a design strategy towards multiplexed, lifetime-encoded tags via engineering intermetallic energy transfer in a family of heterometallic rare-earth metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). The MOFs are derived from a combination of a high-energy donor (Eu), a low-energy acceptor (Yb) and an optically inactive ion (Gd) with the 1,2,4,5 tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl) benzene (TCPB) organic linker. Precise manipulation of

Outsourcing Intersystem Crossing without Heavy Atoms: Energy Transfer Dynamics in PyridoneBODIPY-C60 Complexes.

The excited state dynamics in two fully characterized pyridoneBODIPY-fullerene complexes were investigated using time-resolved spectroscopy. Photoexcitation was initially localized on the pyridoneBODIPY chromophore. The energy was rapidly transferred to the fullerene, which subsequently underwent ISC to form a triplet state and returned the energy to the pyridoneBODIPY via triplet-triplet energy transfer. This ping-pong energy transfer mechanism resulted in efficient (>85%) overall conversion of the excited state pyridoneBODIPY constituent despite a complete lack of ISC in the pyridoneBODIPY i

Measuring protein interactions using Förster resonance energy transfer and fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy.

The method of fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy (FLIM) is a quantitative approach that can be used to detect Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET). The use of FLIM to measure the FRET that results from the interactions between proteins labeled with fluorescent proteins (FPs) inside living cells provides a non-invasive method for mapping interactomes. Here, the use of the phasor plot method to analyze frequency domain (FD) FLIM measurements is described, and measurements obtained from cells producing the 'FRET standard' fusion proteins are used to validate the FLIM system for FRET mea

Energy transfer, volumetric expansion, and removal of oral biofilms by non-contact brushing.

Non-contact removal of oral biofilms offers advantages beyond the reach of bristles, but it is unknown how energy transfer for removal from brush-to-biofilm occurs. In the present study we evaluated non-contact, oral biofilm removal by oscillating-rotating and sonic toothbrushes, and their acoustic output up to 6 mm distance. Whereas some brushes removed biofilm when used at a distance of up to 6 mm, others lost efficacy at a distance of 2-4 mm from the biofilm. Loss of efficacy was accompanied with high standard deviations and volumetric biofilm expansion. Both sonic and oscillating-rotating

Diffusion-enhanced energy transfer shows accessibility of ribonucleic acid polymerase inhibitor binding sites.

Rifamycin and Cibacron Blue F3GA are powerful inhibitors of Escherichia coli deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) dependent ribonucleic acid (RNA) polymerase. In addition, both inhibitors strongly absorb visible light, making them suitable for use as acceptors in energy-transfer experiments. Transfer of energy to these acceptors from freely diffusing energy donors with long excited-state lifetimes (approximately 10(-3) s) depends strongly on whether donor and acceptor can make direct intermolecular contact. We observe that the rate constant for energy transfer from a small terbium chelate to enzyme-bou

Heterogeneous energy-transfer metallaphotocatalysis unlocks direct and site-selective thioglycosylation of unprotected thiosugars.

The creation of glycoconjugates, particularly well-defined glycopeptides, is crucial for advancing biological research and therapeutic development. However, the direct and selective coupling of unprotected thioglycosides to native biomolecules remains a formidable challenge due to the incompatibility of conventional synthetic methods with the delicate and complex functional groups present in these molecules. Here, we report a heterogeneous metallaphotocatalytic strategy that addresses this limitation through an energy-transfer mechanism. By embedding nickel catalytic centers within a photoacti

Chirality-Matched Piezoelectric Responsiveness and Energy Transfer in Supramolecular Co-Assembly of Dipeptides.

The concept of homochirality is fundamental to living systems, where biopolymers exhibit a uniform chiral signature. The absence of heterochiral or racemic biopolymers in nature highlights the importance of homochirality in precise molecular recognition, efficient packing, and controlled folding for maintaining cellular homeostasis and biological function. However, the role of homochirality in governing emergent functional properties in synthetic supramolecular nanomaterials has been less explored. Here, we investigate homochiral recognition of dipeptides at their co-assembled state. Homochira

Cascaded Energy Transfer in Supramolecular Assemblies Enables Amplified and Photoswitchable Circularly Polarized Luminescence.

Photoresponsive circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) materials are promising for optical information processing and anti-counterfeiting. However, integrating high luminescence dissymmetry factor (glum) with high-contrast reversible switching within a single system remains a significant challenge. In this study, we present a supramolecular CPL nanoplatform that combines hierarchical chirality amplification with light-gated cascaded Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET). Selective host-guest recognition between a TPE-functionalized chiral pillar[5]arene (TPEP5) and a polymeric guest forms

Intracellular Postpolymerization Modification via Bioorthogonal Click Chemistry Monitored by Förster Resonance Energy Transfer.

The need for multifunctional polymers in cellular environments arises from their potential applications in cancer treatment, drug delivery, gene delivery, imaging, sensing of different biomolecules, environmental and cellular engineering, etc. However, due to certain limitations, the direct polymerization of multifunctional polymers within cells is not feasible, as it faces many challenges. Therefore, this study emphasizes the synthesis of functionalized molecules outside the cells and subsequent modification of the polymers inside the cells through intracellular postpolymerization modificatio

Semiclassical analytic theory of multi-channel electronic energy transfer in nonadiabatic atomic collisions.

The semiclassical theory of nonadiabatic energy transfer [Adamovich and Rich, J. Chem. Phys. 160, 194101 (2024)] is extended to include multi-channel electronic excitation and quenching in three-dimensional atomic collisions. The transition probabilities, cross sections, and rate coefficients predicted by the theory are compared with high-fidelity quantum scattering predictions for N + N, using state-of-the-art ab initio interaction potentials and nonadiabatic couplings, and with a few available experiments. The theory predictions are in good agreement with quantum scattering, both for conditi

Biarticular gastrocnemii muscles increase their joint energy transfer potential at high running speeds.

The involvement of energy transfer mechanisms between the ankle and the knee joint by the biarticular gastrocnemii muscles at high running speeds is currently unknown. During running at seven speeds (3.0-8.5 m s-1), the ankle and knee joint kinematics as well as the electromyographic activity of the gastrocnemius medialis and lateralis were captured. By means of the ankle-knee joint coupling angles, we determined the energy transfer potential between the two joints as the fraction of contact time where the joint angles are in-phase. At speeds above 6.0 m s-1, the ankle-to-knee joint energy tra

Facilitating Energy and Charge Transfer from CsPbBr3 Perovskite Nanocrystals via Ligand Shell Reconstruction.

Efficiently extracting photon energy from colloidal lead halide perovskite nanocrystals (PNCs) as excitons and charge carriers is a crucial step in many applications of these materials. We herein report a functionalization strategy based on reconstructing the surface chemical environment of CsPbBr3 PNCs to strengthen the binding of acceptor motifs and, thereby, enhance energy and charge carrier transfer efficiency. A zwitterion ligand, 2-ammonium benzenesulfonate, was employed to protect the integrity of the PNC surface during a purification step for removing excess original synthetic ligands.
