The enkephalins are small, pentapeptide neurotransmitter molecules which have reportedly been used in racing horses. In our experiments, D-Ala2-Metenkephalinamide and leucine enkephalin were administered to horses intravenously (IV) and intracisternally (IC). Human carotid bodies obtained at necropsy that showed prominence of either the sustentacular cell or the dark variant of chief cell or chronic carotid glomitis were studied by an immunogold labeling technique. Twenty-four male subjects participated in a study in which the effect of feeding diets low in copper (1.03 mg/day) on plasma opiates was determined. The subjects were fed a low-copper diet for 11 wk with either starch or fructose as a major source of carbohydrate. Feeding low-copper diet decreased serum copper level significantly. INTRODUCTION: A recent study has shown a close neuroanatomical relationship between the enkephalinergic (methionine-enkephalin) and tachykininergic (substance P) systems in the alpaca diencephalon. In this study, our aim is to show this relationship in the alpaca brainstem.
