Enterococci are ubiquitous usually commensal bacteria that can act as opportunistic pathogens frequently associated with resistance to multiple antimicrobial classes. A variety of animals may carry potentially harmful enterococci. In the present work, the occurrence and characteristics of enterococci recovered from the fecal microbiota of wild birds belonging to four families (Accipitridae, Cathartidae, Falconidae and Strigidae) were investigated. Enterococci were recovered from 104 (92.0%) fecal samples obtained from 113 birds, and 260 strains were selected for additional characterization. En

This work introduces a novel class of hybrid antimicrobial agents by integrating sulfone and sulfonamide functionalities with polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSSs). By employing efficient synthetic protocols, we have successfully prepared both sulfone (ethylvinylsulfone-POSS and phenylethylsulfone-POSS) and sulfonamide (benzenesulfonamide-POSS, p-toluenesulfonamide-POSS, 3-fluorobenzenesulfonamide-POSS, and 2-naphthalenesulfonamide-POSS) derivatives with high yields (73-90%). All derivatives were examined using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, multinuclear (1H, 13C, 19F, and 29

The rising prevalence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) of bacteria is a global health problem at the human, animal, and environmental interfaces, which necessitates the "One Health" approach. AMR of bacteria in animal feed are a potential cause of the prevalence in livestock; however, the role remains unclear. To date, there is limited research on AMR of bacteria in animal feed in Japan. In this study, a total of 57 complete feed samples and 275 feed ingredient samples were collected between 2018 and 2020. Enterococcus spp. were present in 82.5% of complete feed (47/57 samples), 76.5% of soyb

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in Enterococcus poses an emerging One Health concern due to its capacity for environmental persistence and cross-sector transmission. This two-year longitudinal study investigated the spatial and seasonal distribution of Enterococcus across interconnected animal, environmental, and human wastewater compartments in a peri-urban region of western Canada. We aimed to i.) characterize Enterococcus species across varying stages of dairy cow maturity, farm environments and nearby municipal wastewater systems and ii.) determine the AMR profiles and genomic relationships

Untreated drinking water is frequently overlooked as a source of antibiotic resistance in developed countries. To gain further insight on this topic, we isolated the indicator bacteria Enterococcus spp. from water samples collected in wells, fountains and natural springs supplying different communities across Portugal, and characterized their antibiotic resistance profile with both phenotypic and genetic approaches. We found various rates of resistance to seven antibiotic families. Over 50% of the isolates were resistant to at least ciprofloxacin, tetracyclines or quinupristin-dalfopristin and

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is an emerging public health threat and is one of the One Health priorities for humans, animals, and environmental health. Red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) are a widespread predator species with great ecological significance, and they may serve as a sentinel of antimicrobial resistance in the general environment. The present study was carried out to detect antimicrobial resistance, antimicrobial resistance genes, and genetic diversity in faecal isolates of red foxes (Vulpes vulpes). In total, 34 Enterococcus isolates, including E. faecium (n = 17), E. faecalis (n = 12),

OBJECTIVES: The European Antimicrobial Susceptibility Surveillance in Animals (EASSA) programme collects zoonotic and commensal bacteria from healthy food-producing animals at slaughter and tracks their susceptibility to medically important antibiotics. Results for enterococci, collected over three time periods, are presented.
METHODS: Intestinal contents from cattle, pigs and chickens were randomly sampled (five or six countries/host; at least four abattoirs/country; one sample/animal/farm) for isolation of enterococci; antimicrobial susceptibilities were centrally assessed by CLSI agar dilu

OBJECTIVES: Enterococci are opportunistic, sometimes life-threatening pathogens with increasing antimicrobial resistance, particularly among clinical human isolates in Australia. While recent studies have ruled out pigs and chickens as major reservoirs of resistant enterococci, the role of cattle remains unclear. This study examines the antimicrobial resistance (AMR) profiles of enterococci from Australian cattle and explores the phylogenetic relationship of bovine E. faecium with isolates from other livestock and human sepsis cases.
METHODS: A total of 1001 bovine faecal samples were tested,

Enterococci are widely distributed in dairy sector. They are commensals of the gastrointestinal tract of animals, thus, via fecal contamination, could reach raw milk and dairy products. The aims of this study were: 1) to investigate the enterococcal diversity in cow feces and milk samples and 2) to evaluate the antibiotic resistance (AR) of dairy-related enterococci and their ability to transfer resistance genes. E. faecalis (59.9%), E. faecium (18.6%) and E. lactis (12.4%) were prevalent in milk, while E. faecium (84.2%) and E. hirae (15.0%) were dominant in bovine feces. RAPD-PCR highlighted

BACKGROUND: Admission to a room previously occupied by patients carrying environmentally robust pathogens implies an increased risk of acquiring those pathogens. Therefore, 'No-touch' automated room disinfection systems, including devices based on UV-C irradiation, are discussed to improve terminal cleaning. It is still unclear if clinical isolates of relevant pathogens behave differently under UV-C irradiation compared to laboratory strains used in the approval process of disinfection procedures. In this study we analysed the susceptibility of well characterized clonally divergent vancomycin-

Bacteriocins (BCN) are antimicrobial peptides that provide potential to control bacterial infections in a variety of applications. We previously reported on three class IIa BCN molecules produced by Lactobacillus salivarius B-30514 (OR-7), Enterococcus faecium B-30746 (E 50-52), and Enterococcus durans/faecium/hirae B-30745 (E-760). These BCN are notably effective against a wide array of pathogenic bacteria. To commercially apply such BCN, adequate quantities must be produced and harvested. We determined that a combination of host producer synthesized signal peptides (SP) in the presence of bo
