Human enterovirus D68 (EV-D68) is a globally reemerging respiratory pathogen that is associated with the development of acute flaccid myelitis (AFM) in children. Currently, there are no approved vaccines or treatments for EV-D68 infection, and there is a paucity of data related to the virus and host-specific factors that predict disease severity and progression to the neurologic syndrome. EV-D68 infection of various animal models has served as an important platform for characterization and comparison of disease pathogenesis between historic and contemporary isolates. Still, there are significa

Enterovirus A71 (EV-A71) is one of the causative pathogens of hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD), which may cause severe neurological and cardiopulmonary complications in children. In this review, we discuss the pathogenesis, clinical manifestations, management strategy, and clinical outcomes of cardiopulmonary failure (CPF) in patients with EV-A71 infection. The pathogenesis of CPF involves both catecholamine-related cardiotoxicity following brainstem encephalitis and vasodilatory shock due to cytokine storm. Sympathetic hyperactivity, including tachycardia and hypertension, are the early cl

Viruses cleave cellular proteins to remodel the host proteome. The study of these cleavages has revealed mechanisms of immune evasion, resource exploitation, and pathogenesis. However, the full extent of virus-induced proteolysis in infected cells is unknown, mainly because until recently the technology for a global view of proteolysis within cells was lacking. Here, we report the first comprehensive catalog of proteins cleaved upon enterovirus infection and identify the sites within proteins where the cleavages occur. We employed multiple strategies to confirm protein cleavages and assigned t

Nonpolio enterovirus infections are common in the neonatal period, accounting for a large portion of febrile illness during the summer months. Unlike older children and adults, some neonates with enterovirus infection progress to multisystem disease and death. Multiple clinical syndromes of varying severity are associated with neonatal enterovirus infection: asymptomatic viral shedding, nonspecific febrile illness, aseptic meningitis, hepatic necrosis and coagulopathy, and myocarditis. In the present paper, a typical case of neonatal febrile illness is presented and the English-language litera

Most intussusceptions in childhood are idiopathic. The association of viral infection has been suspected for decades. We report a case of ileocolonic intussusception in a child during a course of enterovirus infection. A 20-month-old girl with vomiting and irritable crying of 4 days' duration was found to have intussusception by sonography. She had suffered from herpangina one week earlier. Due to her peritoneal signs, she underwent surgical manual reduction. A cluster of enlarged lymph nodes in the intussuscipiens was noted preoperatively by high resolution ultrasound. Two swollen lymph nodes

BACKGROUND: Enterovirus 71 infection causes hand-foot-and-mouth disease in young children, which is characterized by several days of fever and vomiting, ulcerative lesions in the oral mucosa, and vesicles on the backs of the hands and feet. The initial illness resolves but is sometimes followed by aseptic meningitis, encephalomyelitis, or even acute flaccid paralysis similar to paralytic poliomyelitis.
METHODS: We describe the neurologic complications associated with the enterovirus 71 epidemic that occurred in Taiwan in 1998. At three major hospitals we identified 41 children with culture-co

Overall 132 patients with Coxsackie B enteroviral infection were admitted to an Astrakhan infectious hospital in 1989. Of these, 100 patients had aseptic meningitis and 32 presented with respiratory infection syndrome. The severity of enteroviral meningitis may vary from mild forms running its course without marked meningeal syndrome to grave ones associated with high pleocytosis, manifest syndrome of CSF hypertension and potential exacerbation of the infectious process. The patients with the syndrome of respiratory infection demonstrated its combination with intestinal disorders (39%). The EC

Enteroviruses is a group of positive single-stranded RNA viruses ubiquitous in the environment, which is a causative agent of epidemic diseases in children and infants. But data on neonates are still limited. The present study aimed to describe the clinical characteristics of enterovirus infection in neonates and arise the awareness of this disease to general public.Between March 2018 and September 2019, data from all of the neonates diagnosed with enterovirus infection were collected and analyzed from neonatal intensive care unit of Zhangzhou Hospital in Fujian, China.A total of 23 neonates w

Enterovirus 71 frequently involves the central nervous system and may present with a variety of neurologic manifestations. Here, we aimed to describe the clinical features, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings, and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) profiles of patients presenting with neurologic complications of enterovirus 71 infection. We retrospectively reviewed the records of 31 pediatric patients hospitalized with acute neurologic manifestations accompanied by confirmed enterovirus 71 infection at Ulsan University Hospital between 2010 and 2014. The patients' mean age was 2.9 ± 5.5 years (ra

Enteroviruses are very common and cause infections with a diverse array of clinical features. Enteroviruses are most frequently considered by practising pathologists in cases of aseptic meningitis, encephalitis, myocarditis and disseminated infections in neonates and infants. Congenital infections have been reported and transplacental transmission is thought to occur. Although skin biopsies during hand, foot and mouth disease are infrequently obtained, characteristic dermatopathological findings can be seen. Enteroviruses have been implicated in lower respiratory tract infections. This review

Administration of prophylactic intravenous immunoglobulins to contacts of infants actively shedding enterovirus during a hospital nursery outbreak may attenuate severity of disease in those contacts and aid in containment of the outbreak. Four cases of neonatal enteroviral disease were treated in our hospital nursery in July and August 2011; 3 were presumed or proven vertical transmission cases and 1 was a presumed horizontal transmission. We aimed to prevent development of severe illness in contacts of affected neonates following a ministry of health advisory during the summer of 2011 warning

Acute necrotizing encephalopathy is a rare, clinically distinct entity of acute encephalopathy triggered by acute febrile diseases, mostly viral infections. It is postulated to arise from uncontrolled cytokine release during a febrile illness, and is most often seen in East Asia. We describe a rare Saudi patient of acute necrotizing encephalopathy attributable to enterovirus in a 4 years and 6 months old girl. A work-up revealed elevations in serum and cerebrospinal fluid interleukin-6 and tumor necrosis factor-α. The outcome on intravenous pulse methylprednisolone was good. This case is the f

Miller-Fisher is a rare syndrome of childhood that presents with external ophthalmoplegia, ataxia, and areflexia. It has been mainly associated with a preceding Campylobacter infection and less commonly with other bacterial or viral infections. This report describes, for the first time, a child with Miller-Fisher syndrome and documented Enterovirus infection, as it was proven by the isolation of Enterovirus from cerebrospinal fluid by polymerase chain reaction testing.

A previously healthy 3-year-old boy presented with high-grade fever, dyspnoea, alteration of consciousness, tachycardia and shock. A few erythematous macules and papules were seen on his palms and soles. Echocardiogram showed poor left ventricular contraction. Cardiac enzymes and pro-B-type natriuretic peptide were elevated. Milrinone, low-dose dopamine and intravenous immunoglobulin were administered. The patient recovered after 5 days without cardiac or neurological sequelae. The serological results showed a four-fold rise of enterovirus 71. In children with severe EV71 infection, early reco

Enterovirus 71 (EV71) has been recognized as a frequent cause of epidemics of hand-foot-and-mouth disease (HFMD) associated with severe neurological symptoms. In the spring of 2009, HFMD was epidemic in Korea. Severe cases with complication, including death, have been reported and it has become a public health issue. Most symptomatic EV71 infections commonly result in HFMD or herpangina. These clinical manifestations can be associated with neurologic syndromes frequently. Neurologic syndromes observed in EV71 include meningitis, meningoencephalomyelitis, poliomyelitis-like paralytic disease, G

Enterovirus 71 (EV71) is a highly infectious major causative agent of hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) which could lead to severe neurological complications. There is currently no effective therapy against EV71. In this study, RNA interference (RNAi) is employed as a therapeutic approach for specific viral inhibition. Various regions of the EV71 genome were targeted for inhibition by chemically synthesized siRNAs. Transfection of rhabdomyosarcoma (RD) cells with siRNA targeting the 3'UTR, 2C, 3C, or 3D region significantly alleviated cytopathic effects of EV71. The inhibitory effect was do
