Desmopressin is a synthetic agonist of the natural pituitary hormone vasopressin acetate, with enhanced antidiuretic properties. In fact, owing to its selectivity for the V2 receptor, it has a greater antidiuretic activity, but lower pressure effects compared with natural antidiuretic hormone. Desmopressin is used in the diagnosis and treatment of cranial diabetes insipidus, in the treatment of monosymptomatic enuresis and for tests of renal function.

POPULATIONS AND METHODS: In order to analyze epidemiological and clinical characteristics of enuresis in children with sickle cell disease, and identify risk and aetiological factors, 987 subjects (aged 5-20 years) took part in a cross-sectional study. These children were divided into two groups: group 1 consisted of 456 homozygous children with sickle cell disease (haemoglobin SS), while group 2 consisted of 531 normal children. These groups were paired according to age and sex.
RESULTS: The prevalence of enuresis was 50.9% in group 1 and 16.4% in group 2, and was significantly higher (P < 0

AIM: To review what is known about the role of sleep and arousal mechanisms in the pathogenesis of nocturnal enuresis.
METHODS: A review of the literature was carried out.
RESULTS: The sleep of enuretic children, although polysomnographically quite normal, is exceedingly "deep"; that is enuretic children have high arousal thresholds. Apart from some overlap between enuresis and the (other) classic parasomnias, the sleep of enuretic children is no more problematic than that of the general population. Recently, the exciting possibility has arisen that the low arousability of enuretic children

The purpose of the study was to clarify whether reflexology is a relevant treatment for enuresis nocturna, and to test a research design applicable to controlled experiments with reflexology. An unblinded method was used comparing a treatment group (1) receiving reflexology to a non-treatment group (2) keeping the same record of symptoms. At the start of the study, the volumes of night urine in the two groups were comparable. By the end of the study, there was no significant decrease in the volume of night urine in either of the groups. Two children in the treatment group and one in the non-tr

Enuresis affects 5 to 10% of primary-school age children. Nocturnal enuresis, or bedwetting, is often familial and boys are mainly concerned; daytime micturitions are normal, without urine loss or urinary tract infection. Hygienic rules associated with desmopressin or, in some cases, tricyclic antidepressant agents, alarm procedures or psychotherapy, result in a 70% success rate after 1 year. Bladder instability consists of diurnal and nocturnal disturbances, mainly in girls with recurrent urinary tract infections; affected children experience pollakiuria, urine loss and voiding emergencies. The effectiveness of oxybutynin in the treatment of primary enuresis was evaluated in a double-blind study. A total of 30 children (25 boys, five girls), at least 6 years of age, with primary enuresis and no daytime incontinence or history of other urinary tract problems were selected at random from an enuresis clinic population. The study was explained to the families and they were told how to keep records of nocturnal bed-wetting episodes and side effects. The patients were treated with a 10 mg of oxybutynin at suppertime for 28 days. Before or after the treatment period, all children receiv

Constipation was confirmed by history, rectal examination, and rectal manometric studies in 22 of 25 children with enuresis. Treatment of constipation resulted in resolution of enuresis. Uninhibited bladder contractions, observed in enuretic constipated children, were also noted in children with constipation alone, suggesting that constipation is a commonly unrecognized etiologic factor in enuresis.

A double blind crossover trial of 20 micrograms intranasal 1-deamino-8-d-arginine vasopressin (DDAVP) versus placebo was carried out in 17 children with intractable enuresis aged between 6 and 13 years who had failed to respond to drugs and an enuresis alarm. Fluid intake was not restricted. There was a significant reduction in the number of wet nights. Seven children (41%) were cured or showed considerable improvement, with strong evidence against any placebo effect. The best response was seen in children aged 10 years or over and if urine osmolality after DDAVP reached beyond 1000 mmol/kg or

The qualitative aspects of drugs used in enuresis control or associated with enuresis or urinary incontinence and the pathological disorders associated with enuresis or urinary incontinence are reviewed. The literature to date does not clarify the factors that account for tricyclic antidepressant effectiveness in enuresis. However, it does reveal that enuresis and urinary incontinence are common symptoms of basal ganglion disorders. Furthermore, pharmacological agents that depress or block dopamine activity produce urinary incontinence or enuresis, while those drugs augmenting the noradrenergi

We studied 115 consecutive cases of primary enuresis. Excretory urography, urodynamic testing and endoscopy are needed only in children with enuresis and concomitant urinary infection. A detailed urologic history was the most important factor in deciding upon a treatment program. Children with diurnal and nocturnal enuresis or nocturnal enuresis and daytime urgency and frequency of urination are started on anticholinergic medication. Girls with enuresis and urinary infection also are started on anticholinergic medication. Significant improvement occurs in up to 90% of the patients. Children wi

Hypercalciuria may present with dysuria, urinary incontinence and nocturnal enuresis (NE). To determine the frequency of hypercalciuria in NE patients and normally continent children, we studied 122 consecutive pre- school children with NE referred to our nephrology clinic during two years, from September 2007 to August 2009. We measured the 24- hour urinary calcium. Furthermore, we compared the response to nasal desmopressin in hypercalciuric and normocalciuric patients. Hypercalciuria was found in 26 (21.3 %) of the NE patients as compared with five (4.5%) of 110 continent children [(P < 0.0

The aim of this study was to establish the prevalence of nocturnal incontinence (NI) in 6-to-7-year-old children from eastern Croatia, to determine the factors associated with NI and to evaluate parental perception of the problem. From May to September 2004, the parents of 3,011 children were asked to complete an anonymous validated questionnaire. The overall prevalence of reported NI was 1.2% (35/3011). All of the cases were cases of secondary NI. NI was significantly more frequent in boys than in girls. Family history of enuresis was present in 68.6% (24/35) of enuretic children. Only 17.1%

BACKGROUND: Nocturnal enuresis (NE) is a common condition in childhood that can adversely affect children's physical and psychological health. Since the publication of the "Expert Consensus on the Management of Monosymptomatic Nocturnal Enuresis in Chinese Children" in 2014, substantial clinical experience has been accumulated and international guidelines have been updated, necessitating a revision to standardize and improve clinical management.
METHODS: This consensus was developed by the Chinese Cooperative Group for the Management of Pediatric Nocturnal Enuresis, the Pediatric Nephrology C

BACKGROUND: Enuresis, also referred to as nocturnal enuresis, is characterised by discrete episodes of urinary incontinence during sleep in children aged ≥5 years in the absence of congenital or acquired neurological disorders. This guideline is an update of the 2017 version.
RECOMMENDATIONS: The guideline provides recommendations and suggestions for various therapeutic options for enuresis available in South Africa (SA). These options include behavioural modification, urotherapy, pharmaceutical therapy, alarm therapy, alternative therapies, neuromodulation, psychological support and biofeedb

OBJECTIVE: Several reports suggest a possible link between child abuse and enuresis or encopresis but concern small series of children and present therefore methodological biases. The objective of the present study was to clarify this issue by examining the relationships between child abuse and enuresis or encopresis in a large sample of children.
METHODS: A multicenter cross-sectional study was conducted on a sample of 428 children in social residential centers in France. Four types of child abuse were considered: sexual abuse, physical abuse, psychological abuse and neglect. The accuracy an

Nocturnal enuresis is the involuntary pass of urine during sleep beyond the age of 5 years. It is a common condition in childhood and has an impact on the child's well-being. Research into the pathophysiology of the condition in the last decades has led to a paradigm shift, and enuresis is no longer considered a psychiatric disorder but rather a maturation defect with a somatic background. An excess urine production during sleep is a common finding in children with enuresis and disturbances in the circadian rhythm of arginine-vasopressin (AVP) is found in the majority of children with nocturna
