Development of a stick-on hip protector: A multiple methods study to improve hip protector design for older adults in the acute care environment.

INTRODUCTION: Over 90% of hip fractures in older adults result from falls, and hospital patients are at especially high risk. Specific types of wearable hip protectors have been shown to reduce hip fracture risk during a fall by up to 80%, but user compliance has averaged less than 50%. We describe the development and evaluation of a "stick-on" hip protector (secured over the hip with a skin-friendly adhesive) for older patients in acute care. METHODS: An initial version of the product was evaluated with six female patients (aged 76-91) in a hospital ward, who were asked to wear it for one we

Testing for Gene-Environment Interactions Using a Prospective Family Cohort Design: Body Mass Index in Early and Later Adulthood and Risk of Breast Cancer.

The ability to classify people according to their underlying genetic susceptibility to a disease is increasing with new knowledge, better family data, and more sophisticated risk prediction models, allowing for more effective prevention and screening. To do so, however, we need to know whether risk associations are the same for people with different genetic susceptibilities. To illustrate one way to estimate such gene-environment interactions, we used prospective data from 3 Australian family cancer cohort studies, 2 enriched for familial risk of breast cancer. There were 288 incident breast c

Multiscale Interpenetrated/Interconnected Network Design Confers All-Carbon Aerogels with Unprecedented Thermomechanical Properties for Thermal Insulation under Extreme Environments.

With ultralight weight, low thermal conductivity, and extraordinary high-temperature resistance, carbon aerogels hold tremendous potential against severe thermal threats encountered by hypersonic vehicles during the in-orbit operation and re-entry process. However, current 3D aerogels are plagued by irreconcilable contradictions between adiabatic and mechanical performance due to monotonicity of the building blocks or uncontrollable assembly behavior. Herein, a spatially confined assembly strategy of multiscale low-dimensional nanocarbons is reported to decouple the stress and heat transfer. T

BusWorld: an analog pilot test of a virtual environment designed to treat posttraumatic stress disorder originating from a terrorist suicide bomb attack.

Exposure therapy treatment can lead to large reductions in posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms. Virtual reality exposure (VRE) therapy is designed to facilitate cognitive behavioral therapy for PTSD. During VRE therapy, patients go into an immersive computer-generated environment (go back to the scene of the traumatic event) to help them gain access to their memories of the traumatic event, change unhealthy thought patterns, gradually habituate to their anxiety, and reduce the intensity of associated emotions. The therapist's ability to manipulate the amount of anxiety experienced by

Frontier Advances in Wind-Driven Triboelectric Nanogenerators for Realistic Wind Environments: Scenario-Oriented Architecture Design, System Integration, and Critical Assessment.

Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) offer promising opportunities for distributed wind energy harvesting owing to their low-speed responsiveness, structural flexibility, and adaptability to non-stationary airflow. This review examines wind-driven TENGs from the perspective of realistic wind-field constraints, focusing on three representative scenarios: urban micro-winds, offshore wind-wave environments, and low-altitude complex flows. Scenario-specific advances in device architectures, materials and interfaces, environmental protection, power management, and system integration are systematica

Relationship between psycho-physiological indicators and task performance under various indoor space designs for telecommuting environment by introducing mixed-reality.

The increase in telecommuting during COVID-19 and advances in digital technology have necessitated the establishment of guidelines for maximizing productivity through indoor space design for telecommuters. Additionally, understanding the physiological response of individuals working in indoor spaces has attracted attention. This study applied mixed-reality environment to alter the design of the indoor space in real-time, while monitoring the task performance and representative psycho-physiological indicators (electroencephalogram and heart rate variability) of 30 individuals with telecommuting

Built Environments to Support Rehabilitation for People With Stroke From the Hospital to the Home (B-Sure): Protocol for a Mixed Method Participatory Co-Design Study.

BACKGROUND: A global trend is to move rehabilitation closer to people's neighborhoods and homes. Still, little attention has been given to how the built environment outside the hospital setting might impact rehabilitation and recovery for stroke survivors. OBJECTIVE: The overarching objective of this project is to develop conceptual models of built environments that support stroke rehabilitation and recovery outside the hospital setting. Specifically, the project will explore factors and characteristics of the built environment that support people with stroke and their families and identify i

Engaging in Awkward Social Interactions in a Virtual Environment Designed for Exposure-Based Psychotherapy for People with Generalized Social Anxiety Disorder: An International Multisite Study.

The effectiveness of in virtuo exposure-based treatment of performance-only social anxiety disorder (SAD) has been demonstrated in several studies. However, few studies have validated virtual environments with participants suffering from generalized SAD. The goal of this study is to confirm the potential of a virtual environment in inducing anxiety in adults suffering from generalized SAD, compared to adults without SAD, when engaged in awkward social interactions. Differences between participants from two different countries were also explored. The sample consisted of 15 participants with SAD

Enhancing physical and social environments to reduce obesity among public housing residents: rationale, trial design, and baseline data for the Healthy Families study.

Intervention programs that change environments have the potential for greater population impact on obesity compared to individual-level programs. We began a cluster randomized, multi-component multi-level intervention to improve weight, diet, and physical activity among low-socioeconomic status public housing residents. Here we describe the rationale, intervention design, and baseline survey data. After approaching 12 developments, ten were randomized to intervention (n=5) or assessment-only control (n=5). All residents in intervention developments are welcome to attend any intervention compon

Investigating the Relationship Between Maternal Smoking During Pregnancy and Offspring Handedness: Extending the Proxy Gene-by-Environment Mendelian Randomization Study Design to Include Polygenic Risk Scores.

Hand preference first appears in early development, yet twin studies and GWAS show that only a minority of variance is explained by heritable genetic factors. Using UK Biobank data and multivariable logistic regression to test associations between potential causes of handedness and offspring hand preference, we then investigated the potential causal effect of maternal smoking during pregnancy on offspring handedness using a proxy gene-by-environment (GxE) Mendelian randomization design. We used rs16969968 in the CHRNA5 gene and a polygenic risk score of genome-wide significant smoking-heavines

Patient input on the design of a social virtual reality environment for hospitalized older adult trauma patients: Phase 1 of a usability, acceptability, and feasibility pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Older adults (65 and above) represent a significant portion of trauma admissions in U.S. hospitals, primarily due to falls and motor vehicle accidents. Managing pain effectively and mitigating social isolation in this population is crucial. Traditional opioid treatments, while common, pose risks such as addiction, delirium, and constipation, leading to extended hospital stays and increased costs. Social isolation is another common problem faced by this population that can also exacerbate pain. Nonpharmacological interventions are thus highly recommended. OBJECTIVE: This pilot stud

Multi-Dimensional Design of Slippery Liquid-Infused Coatings Empowering Long-Term Corrosion Protection for Sintered Nd-Fe-B Magnets in Harsh Environments.

In spite of superior magnetic properties, neodymium-iron-boron (Nd-Fe-B) applications in harsh environments have been greatly hindered by their susceptibility to corrosion, humidity, mechanical, and temperature attacks. Herein, a construction strategy of robust slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces (SLIPS) coatings is proposed via the multi-dimensional design of surface, bulk coating, and interface. The manipulation of colloidal states of silica particles by chemical hydrophobization allows for building a dense polymer network, enhancing interfacial adhesion and locking lubricant film effect

Drug Designing against PfHT1 Coupled With Molecular Dynamics in Plasma Membrane Environment Reveals, Ligand-Induced Conformational Change From Open to Closed State.

Plasmodium falciparum hexose transporter 1 protein or PfHT1 is the major glucose transporter of the parasite and indispensable for its survival at the blood stage of infection. PfHT1 transports the hexose sugar to meet the energy demand of the parasite. Studying the mechanism of transport and designing structure specific inhibitors against PfHT1 is an intelligent strategy to kill malaria parasite by starving it out because at the blood stage the sole carbon source of Plasmodium falciparum is glucose. In this study the conformational dynamics of PfHT1 has been studied in detail in the apo and h

Street environments and crime around low-income and minority schools: Adopting an environmental audit tool to assess crime prevention through environmental design (CPTED).

Crime prevention through environmental design (CPTED) suggests an association between micro-scale environmental conditions and crime, but little empirical research exists on the detailed street-level environmental features associated with crime near low-income and minority schools. This study focuses on the neighborhoods around 14 elementary schools serving lower income populations in Seattle, WA to assess if the distribution of crime incidences (2013-2017) is linked with the street-level environmental features that reflect CPTED principles. We used a total of 40 audit variables that were incl

Effectiveness of a therapeutic multiple-lifestyle intervention taking into account the periconceptional environment in the management of infertile couples: study design of a randomized controlled trial - the PEPCI study.

BACKGROUND: Infertility is defined as the inability to conceive after 12 months of unprotected intercourse. It affects approximately one in six couples seeking pregnancy in France or western countries. Many lifestyle factors of the couples' pre and peri-conceptional environment (weight, diet, alcohol, tobacco, coffee, drugs, physical activity, stress, sleep…) have been identified as risk factors for infertility in both males and females. The high prevalence rates of unhealthy diets and lifestyles in the reproductive population of industrialized countries are worrisome. Nevertheless, adoption o
