Biomarkers of environmental enteric dysfunction are differently associated with recovery and growth among children with moderate acute malnutrition in Sierra Leone.

BACKGROUND: Environmental enteric dysfunction (EED) may influence growth during and recovery from moderate acute malnutrition (MAM), however, biomarkers to assess these relations have yet to be identified. OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this study were to: 1) develop a score for EED based on host fecal mRNA transcripts, 2) compare biomarkers of EED with each other, and 3) examine associations between the EED biomarkers and recovery from MAM and growth outcomes. METHODS: In a cohort of 520 Sierra Leonean MAM children, biomarkers of EED included the lactulose: mannitol (L: M) test, 15 host feca

Evaluation of Aspergillus and Mucorales specific T-cells and peripheral blood mononuclear cell cytokine signatures as biomarkers of environmental mold exposure.

Mold specific T-cells have been described as a supportive biomarker to monitor invasive mycoses and mold exposure. This study comparatively evaluated frequencies and cytokine profiles of Aspergillus fumigatus and Mucorales reactive T-cells depending on environmental mold exposure. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) obtained from 35 healthy donors were stimulated with mycelial lysates of A. fumigatus and three human pathogenic Mucorales species. CD154+ specific T-cells were quantified by flow cytometry. In a second cohort of 20 additional donors, flow cytometry was complemented by 13-pl

Uptake, Accumulation, and Biomarkers of PM2.5-Associated Organophosphate Flame Retardants in C57BL/6 Mice after Chronic Exposure at Real Environmental Concentrations.

Although the bioaccumulation of organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs) in aquatic organisms has been investigated, little information is available about their bioaccumulation in mammals following chronic inhalation exposure. To address this knowledge gap, C57BL/6 mice were exposed to 7 PM2.5-associated OPFRs via the trachea to study their bioaccumulation, tissue distribution, and urinary metabolites. Low (corresponding to the real PM2.5 concentrations occurring during winter in Guangzhou), medium, and high dosages were examined. After 72 days' exposure, ∑OPFR concentrations in tissues from m

Familial versus environmental factors in Balkan endemic nephropathy in Mehedinti county, Romania, by means of albuminuria and tubular biomarkers: preliminary study.

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: Balkan endemic nephropathy (BEN), a regional tubulointerstitial kidney disease encountered in South-Eastern Europe, with still undefined etiology and inexorable evolution towards end stage renal disease, raises the question of the relative contribution of family and environmental factors in its etiology. In order to evaluate the intervention of these factors, markers of tubular injury have been assessed, this lesion being considered an early renal involvement in BEN. METHODS: The paper studies relatives of BEN patients currently included in dialysis programmes (for invo

Technology-Related Trace Elements in Paediatric Scalp-Hair Biomonitoring: Biomarker Validity, Environmental Relevance, and Implications for Risk Assessment.

Technology-related trace elements (TTEs), including rare earth elements (REEs), platinum-group elements (PGEs), silver, antimony, bismuth, barium, strontium, vanadium and radionuclide-associated elements, are increasingly relevant to environmental exposure assessment. Children and adolescents are important sentinel populations, and scalp hair offers a non-invasive matrix for multielement analysis. However, a reported hair concentration may combine follicular incorporation, sweat and sebum deposition and external particles, and may also be influenced by collection, washing, cosmetic treatment a

Expression profiling of selected genes of toxication and detoxication pathways in peripheral blood lymphocytes as a biomarker for predicting toxicity of environmental chemicals.

To develop a rapid and sensitive tool for determining gene expression profiles of peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBL) as a surrogate for predicting toxicity associated with environmental exposures, studies were initiated using Taqman Low Density Array (TLDA), a medium throughput method for real time PCR (RT-PCR), for selected genes involved in toxication and detoxication processes. Total RNA was prepared from PBL and liver samples isolated from young rats treated with inducers of drug metabolizing enzymes, e.g. phenobarbital (PB, 80mg/kg i.p. X5 days) or methylcholanthrene (30mg/kg, i.p. X5 day

Molecularly Imprinted Polymer-Based Biosensors for Disease Biomarker Detection and Environmental Monitoring from Fundamental Principles to Emerging Applications.

Molecularly imprinted polymers have emerged as robust synthetic recognition materials for selective detection of disease biomarkers and environmental contaminants owing to their high physicochemical stability, low production cost and tunable binding site architecture. Compared with biological receptors, MIPs provide durable and reusable sensing platforms suitable for operation in complex matrices and harsh environmental conditions. Recent advances in imprinting strategies have significantly improved binding site accessibility, adsorption capacity and selectivity, enabling detection of a wide r

Image-based morphological characterization of the erythrocytic shape of green turtle (Chelonia mydas) for its potential use as an environmental biomarker.

Environmental pollutants increase genotoxic damage in green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas). Erythrocytic nuclear abnormalities (ENA) have been identified using the micronucleus (MN) test, a biomarker of DNA damage. The MN test is time-consuming, and counting depends on the observer, who requires training to avoid false positives. This study aimed to evaluate the utility of image-based morphometric measurements of erythrocyte nuclear shape to assess differences among green turtles from the Mexican Caribbean inhabiting four feeding sites with varying levels of anthropogenic pressure. An semi-autom

Sublethal effects of diclofenac and ibuprofen, individually and in mixture, in a Neotropical fish: A multi-biomarker assessment under environmentally realistic concentrations.

Pharmaceutical contamination of aquatic ecosystems is a growing global concern, particularly in tropical regions where non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as diclofenac (DCF) and ibuprofen (IBU) are frequently detected. This study investigated the sublethal effects of environmentally relevant concentrations of DCF, IBU, as well as their mixture (IBU+DCF) on the freshwater Neotropical fish Astyanax lacustris, using a multi-biomarker approach. Fish were exposed for 7 days, and biomarkers related to oxidative stress, detoxification, osmoregulation, genotoxicity, and endocrine func

Histological and Chemical Analysis of Heavy Metals in Kidney and Gills of Boops boops: Melanomacrophages Centers and Rodlet Cells as Environmental Biomarkers.

Industrialization has resulted in a massive increase in garbage output, which is frequently discharged or stored in waterways like rivers and seas. Due to their toxicity, durability, bioaccumulation, and biomagnification, heavy metals (such as mercury, cadmium, and lead) have been identified as strong biological poisons. Their presence in the aquatic environment has the potential to affect water quality parameters and aquatic life in general. Teleosts' histopathology provides a sensitive indicator of pollutant-induced stress, because their organs have a central role in the transformation of di

Biomarkers of exposure to tobacco smoke and environmental pollutants in mothers and their transplacental transfer to the foetus. Part I: bulky DNA adducts.

(32)P-postlabelling and PAH-ELISA using the antiserum #29 were employed to analyze DNA adducts in venous and umbilical cord blood and the placenta of 79 mothers giving birth to 80 living babies in Prague (Czech Republic). Ambient air exposure was measured by stationary measurements of basic air pollutants (PM2.5, c-PAHs) during the entire pregnancy. Tobacco smoke exposure was assessed by questionnaire data and by plasma cotinine levels. The total DNA adduct levels in the lymphocytes of mothers and newborns were elevated by 30-40% (p<0.001) compared with the placenta. B[a]P-like DNA adduct (add

Effect of potassium dichromate and fenitrothion on hemoglobins of Chironomus riparius Mg. (Diptera, Chironomidae) larvae: potential biomarker of environmental monitoring.

In an attempt to identify Chironomus hemoglobins as biomarkers for environmental monitoring, alterations in the hemoglobins in Chironomus riparius Mg. (Diptera: Chironomidae) larvae, exposed to potassium dichromate and fenitrothion, were investigated under laboratory conditions. The hemoglobins were evaluated in terms of their total contents by a cyanomethemoglobin procedure, individual components by electrophoresis of isoelectric focusing, and their oxidation by multi wavelength rapid-scanning spectrophotometry. The total hemoglobin contents increased at the high level of fenitrothion exposur

Putative Biomarkers of Environmental Enteric Disease Fail to Correlate in a Cross-Sectional Study in Two Study Sites in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Environmental enteric dysfunction (EED) is an elusive, inflammatory syndrome of the small intestine thought to be associated with enterocyte loss and gut leakiness and lead to stunted child growth. To date, the gold standard for diagnosis is small intestine biopsy followed by histology. Several putative biomarkers for EED have been proposed and are widely used in the field. Here, we assessed in a cross-sectional study of children aged 2-5 years for a large set of biomarkers including markers of protein exudation (duodenal and fecal alpha-1-antitrypsin (AAT)), inflammation (duodenal and fecal c

Environmental Toxic Metals and Metalloids Exposure and Cardiovascular Health: Current Evidence from Oxidative Stress and Inflammatory Biomarkers as Indicators of Subclinical Cardiovascular Effects.

Cardiovascular diseases remain the leading cause of global mortality, and environmental toxic metals and metalloids (TMMs) exposure has emerged as an important and potentially modifiable cardiovascular (CV) risk factor. Due to their persistence, bioaccumulation, and widespread distribution, represent a significant public health concern and have been associated with adverse CV outcomes. Mechanistically, TMM-induced cardiotoxicity is primarily mediated through oxidative stress (OS) and inflammatory pathways. Accordingly, related biomarkers, may be considered markers of biological effect and pote

Disentangling environmental and disease-specific signatures in the gut microbiome of psoriasis: discovery of Fimenecus sp. as a novel biomarker and characterization of the gut virome.

BACKGROUND: The contribution of the gut microbiome to the pathogenesis of psoriasis remains a subject of debate, with inconsistent findings across studies likely confounded by environmental factors. This study aimed to statistically disentangle the effects of a shared household environment from disease-specific microbial signatures in psoriasis. Our objective was to identify novel, multi-kingdom biomarkers, encompassing bacteria and viruses, that hold significant diagnostic and therapeutic potential. METHODS: We conducted a nested case-control study, performing shotgun metagenomic sequencing

Association between Circulating Retinol Binding Protein 4, Body Mass Index, and Biomarkers of Environmental Enteric Dysfunction among Slum-Dwelling Lean Adults in Bangladesh.

The relationship of retinol binding protein 4 (RBP4) with biomarkers of intestinal health and gut integrity in adults is unknown. We sought to determine the correlation between plasma RBP4 level and BMI and investigate the relationship of circulating RBP4 concentration with biomarkers of environmental enteric dysfunction among lean adults (body mass index [BMI] < 25.0 kg/m2) in Bangladesh. Overall, 270 adults (135 undernourished with a BMI < 18.5 kg/m2 and 135 healthy controls with a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 kg/m2) aged 18 to 45 years were evaluated. Multivariable linear regression was perfor

Biomarkers of environmental enteric dysfunction associated with the linear growth of children 0-5 years in low- and middle-income countries: a systematic review.

A major driver of the link between poor water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) and child stunting is hypothesised to be a sub-clinical condition of the small intestine termed environmental enteric dysfunction (EED). This systematic review aimed to collate research investigating the association between biomarkers of EED and child linear growth outcomes. A systematic search of literature was conducted to identify articles that contain a measure of a domain of EED and its association with linear growth outcomes published up to 31 December 2024. Data pertaining to the measure of EED and child linear

Geographic and Environmental Differences in Associations Between Food Insecurity and Nutritional and Inflammatory Biomarkers Among Pregnant Participants in the All of Us Research Program.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Food insecurity (FI) affects a substantial proportion of pregnant individuals in the United States and varies across geographic contexts. Rural and urban communities differ in food access, socioeconomic conditions, and environmental exposures, yet how these differences relate to maternal biology remain misunderstood. METHODS: This study examined associations between FI, geographic context, and metabolic, nutritional, and inflammatory biomarkers among pregnant participants in the Southeastern United States (SE-US) using data from the All of Us (AoU) Research Program. Incidence and biomarkers of pregnancy, spontaneous abortion, and neonatal loss during an environmental stressor: Implications for female reproductive suppression in the cooperatively breeding meerkat.

Meerkats are group-living, insectivorous herpestids in which subordinate members provide extensive care for the dominant female's young. In contrast to some cooperative breeders, subordinate female meerkats are physiologically able to reproduce and occasionally do so successfully; their attempts are more frequently 'suppressed' via eviction or infanticide by the dominant female. Spontaneous abortion and neonatal loss occur with some regularity, further negatively impacting reproductive success. Here, we compared the reproductive outcomes and endocrine profiles, including of serum progesterone

Heat shock protein gene expression varies among populations but does not strongly track recent environmental conditions: implications for biomarker development.

INTRODUCTION: Global temperatures are rising, and scientists are mobilizing to uncover which birds are most affected by the problem of heat. Heat shock proteins (HSPs), for example, can shed light on this issue because they prevent damage and promote recovery from heat. However, few studies have investigated the relationship between HSPs and heat outside of experimental contexts. Here, we ask whether natural variation in HSP gene expression can serve as a biomarker of recent ambient conditions in wild nestling tree swallows (Tachycineta bicolor). METHODS: We focused on HSP90AA1 because this H
