This paper analyzes and systematizes the race and class differentials in exposure to toxic hazards and actual health outcomes. Research is categorized into the following: Proximity to known hazards includes (1) presence of hazardous waste sites and facilities (landfills, incinerators, Superfund sites), (2) exposure to air pollution, (3) exposure to various environmental hazards, e.g., toxic releases and hazards in pesticides and foods; Regulation, amelioration and cleanup includes (4) record of decisions (RODs) and cleanups at NPL sites, (5) regulatory action, as measured by assessed fines for

STUDY OBJECTIVE: Segregated Hispanic/Latino communities experience poor residential air quality. Toxic air pollution has been linked to higher mortality risk and chronic illnesses, including asthma. This qualitative study sought to develop a comprehensive understanding of facilitators and barriers to civic engagement among community organizers from a low-income community affected by environmental injustice who worked to develop an air pollution mitigation project.
METHODS: Environmental justice community organizers (n = 21) affiliated with the Natural Park Air Pollution Solution project were

Air pollution is a major contributor to human morbidity and mortality, potentially exacerbated by COVID-19, and a threat to planetary health. Participatory research, with a structural violence framework, illuminates exposure inequities and refines mitigation strategies. Home to profitable oil and shipping industries, several census tracts in Richmond, CA are among the most heavily impacted by aggregate burdens statewide. Formally trained researchers from the Center for Environmental Research and Children's Health (CERCH) partnered with the RYSE youth justice center to conduct youth participato

BACKGROUND: Children who have, or have had, an incarcerated parent/s are at increased risk for mental health issues. However, most research has focused on the impact of incarcerated parents and not accounted for noncustodial family members’ criminal-legal justice system involvement or how neighborhood characteristics such as area deprivation (ADI: income, education, and housing quality), environmental justice (EJI: environmental burden, social and health vulnerability), or urbanicity (RUCA) may affect these relationships. To address these gaps, we investigated the association of familial incar

Aggressive behavior, shaped by genetics and environmental or contextual influences, is expressed differently across development and may lead to criminal justice involvement through arrests and incarceration for some individuals. This study examined the differential impacts of early childhood contextual risk and polygenic risk on a developmental cascade from middle childhood physical aggression and dysregulation to adolescent antisocial behavior, to criminal justice system involvement by age 19, and whether these risks were mitigated by random assignment to the Family Check-Up (FCU) prevention

BACKGROUND: The ger ("tent city") areas in Mongolia are a product of rapid urbanization and transitional economic development combine with lack of institutional, administrative and financial capacity of governments to cope with the pace. These areas have become traps for inequities in social and environmental services and the associated effects on human health. Disparities in childhood lead exposure in such communities are largely unexplored.
METHODS: We measured the concentrations of lead in blood of children, aged 4-7 years, in Erdenet (Orkhon Province) and Darkhan (Darkhan-Uul Province), t

OBJECTIVE: A grassroots environmental-justice organisation in Kansas City has been examining the disproportionate exposure to air pollution experienced by residents living fenceline to the largest classification railyard in the USA. Prior analyses showed limited increased risk for asthma exacerbation for patients with asthma living closer to toxic release inventory (TRI) facilities and railyards. In this study, we assessed geographical asthma and environmental disparities, to further explore community-level disparities.
DESIGN: This is a cross-sectional study of population-level asthma rates,

Individuals with serious mental illness (SMI) are at increased risk for arrest and incarceration relative to the same-community population without SMI. Publicly-funded inpatient psychiatric hospitals usually feature short lengths of stay and limited opportunities for extended services that might impact criminal justice involvement after discharge. This study examined the influence of an early intervention program for SMI at a high-volume public psychiatric hospital on involvement in the criminal justice system post-discharge. The Early Onset Treatment Program (EOTP) is an extended service inte

The significant contribution of road-transport to air pollution within the urban arena is widely acknowledged, and traditionally explored in relation to health outcomes across a temporal scale. However, the structure of the urban environment is also of importance in dictating the existence of extremely variable traffic pollutant levels, which often tend to be linked with social disparities. Nevertheless 'Environmental Justice' studies have rarely tackled the adverse health implications of exposures from mobile sources (Chakraborty, 2009), or have applied statistical techniques that are appropr

Community-academic partnerships have demonstrated potential for studying and improving community and environmental health, but only recently have their policy impacts been systematically studied. This case study highlights the evolution, research, and policy processes and outcomes of a community based participatory research (CBPR) partnership that has had multilevel impacts on health policy concerning diesel bus emissions and related environmental justice issues. The partnership between West Harlem Environmental ACTion, Inc. (WE ACT) and the Columbia University Center for Children's Environmen

BACKGROUND: Environmental factors are a major cause of poor health worldwide. The most solid evidence is for air pollution, leading to increased disability-adjusted life years. Outdoor temperature and other seasonal climate changes may also influence cardiovascular health, according to their direct modulation of air pollution. Moreover, an increasing body of evidence associates environmental exposure to noise with poor cardiovascular outcome, and in particular with hypertension.
METHODS: This review is aimed at reviewing current evidence about the role of these environmental factors in cardio

A growing body of epidemiological studies shows that noise increases the risk for broad-ranging physiological and psychological illnesses. According to the World Health Organization, at least 1.6 million healthy years of life are lost annually in Western Europe due to traffic noise alone. Scholars from selected Expert Panels of the American Academy of Nursing convened to update the information regarding the effects of environmental noise on health disparities, physiological changes in the human body and in animals, and environmental justice issues, and to inform the public and policy makers' e

OBJECTIVE: Callous-unemotional (CU) traits are associated with chronic and severe antisocial behavior. Although previous research has found that parents play an important role in the etiology and maintenance of youth CU traits, little research has examined the extent that parents' own CU traits impact the stability of their children's CU traits. The present study investigated the moderating role of maternal CU traits on developmental changes in youth CU traits.
METHOD: A sample of 346 mother-son dyads, in which all youth were justice-involved males (Mage = 15.81; 57.80% Latino, 20.52% White,

BACKGROUND: Climate change poses significant risks to human health, particularly for future generations, making it imperative to integrate climate education into school curricula. This study evaluates the feasibility of expanding the Health Effects of Climate Change Curriculum (HECCC) from Baltimore, MD, to urban youth in Providence County, Rhode Island. Developed by the Lung Health Ambassadors Programme (LHAP) at Johns Hopkins University, the HECCC is an interdisciplinary curriculum aimed at educating students on the health impacts of climate change and empowering them to take local action.

Climate change poses an escalating threat to health, livelihoods, and economic development in Sierra Leone, a coastal, low-income country highly dependent on rain-fed agriculture for sustenance and revenue. Rising temperatures, erratic rainfall, floods, landslides, sea-level rise, and coastal erosion disrupt food systems and damage infrastructure, subsequently entrenching poverty, with projected gross domestic product losses of up to 10% by 2050. The health impacts fall disproportionately on children, adolescents and young people, pregnant women, the elderly, and the urban poor, including incr

INTRODUCTION: Intimate partner violence has enduring impacts that persist well beyond the cessation of abuse. Recovery and healing, though recognised as a priority in the Australian Government's national policy, has received less research attention compared with prevention, early intervention, and response. Survivors experience interruptions to their occupations during abuse and face occupational injustice. There is limited understanding of how these occupations recover and whether occupational justice is restored during the recovery phase.

Environmental health researchers, sociologists, policy-makers, and activists concerned about environmental justice argue that communities of color who are segregated in neighborhoods with high levels of poverty and material deprivation are also disproportionately exposed to physical environments that adversely affect their health and well-being. Examining these issues through the lens of racial residential segregation can offer new insights into the junctures of the political economy of social inequality with discrimination, environmental degradation, and health. More importantly, this line of

Intersectionality is a critical theoretical framework that emphasizes the influence of intersecting systems of oppression on the lived experiences of people marginalized by inequity. Although applications of intersectionality are increasing in public health, this framework is absent in environmental health, which has instead focused on the exposome, a paradigm that considers the totality of an individual's environmental exposures across the life course.Despite advancements in the biological complexity of exposome models, they continue to fall short in addressing health inequities. Therefore, w
