Water deprivation affects serotoninergic system and glycoprotein secretion in the sub-commissural organ of a desert rodent Meriones shawi.

Water deprivation is a stress that has been associated with activation of several endocrine systems, including circumventricular organs of the central nervous system. The sub-comissural organ (SCO), characterized by its glycoprotein secretion called Reissner's fiber has been suggested to play a role in the regulation of body water balance. Meriones shawi, a semi-desertic rodent characterized by its resistance to long periods of thirst was subjected to water deprivation for 1 and 3 months. Effect of water deprivation was evaluated immunohistochemically on 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT; serotonin) s

Induction of Fos in glia-like cells after focal brain injury but not during wallerian degeneration.

Focal brain injury or perforant-path transections respectively led to an increase in the number of glial-fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP)-immunopositive astrocytes around the focal wound or in the terminal fields of the perforant path in the dentate molecular layer. This GFAP accumulation occurred 48-72 h after focal brain injury or perforant-path transection (wallerian degeneration). Focal brain injury also led to an accumulation of c-fos protein (Fos) in glial cells, ependyma and cells in the pia mater of the brain within 6 h of injury and this effect dissipated within 72 h. However, perfora

[The morphology and incidence of supraependymal structures in the cerebral ventricle system in sheep].

The morphology and distribution of supraependymal structures in the ventricular system of sheep of both sexes were studied by common histological methods. Seven forms of supraependymal structures were distinguished according to shape; they are most frequent and most variable in the infundibular region of the third cerebral ventricle. In the ewes their occurrence in this region depends on the status of the ovarian cycle and in the rams it depends on the year season. The most frequent forms are hemi-spherical to spherical light-coloured protrusions and the so-called blebs: in the ewes they occur

A programmed ependymal denudation precedes congenital hydrocephalus in the hyh mutant mouse.

Hydrocephalic hyh mice are born with moderate hydrocephalus and a normal cerebral aqueduct. At about the fifth postnatal day the aqueduct becomes obliterated and severe hydrocephalus develops. The aim of the present investigation was to investigate the mechanism of this hydrocephalus, probably starting during fetal life when the cerebral aqueduct is still patent. By use of immunocytochemistry and scanning electron microscopy, mutant (n = 54) and normal (n = 61) hyh mouse embryos were studied at various developmental stages to trace the earliest microscopic changes occurring in the brains of em

[Karyometric changes in the neurons of the hypothalamic and ependymal nuclei of the 3d cerebral ventricle in sheep after administration of Gn-RH and subsequent irradiation].

Caryometric analysis was used for the study of changes in the cell nucleus volume of the neurons of nucleus paraventricularis, nucleus arcuatus, and ependyma of the third cerebral ventricle of sheep after the administration of Gn-RH, followed by exposure to X-rays. The test animals were 12 ewes in physiological anoestrus and two rams. The trials were conducted in spring. The first group of four sheep and two rams were left as controls; in the ewes of the second group the hypothalamo-hypophysial region was irradiated by exposure to 516.5 mC/kg (200 R); in the four ewes of the third group, ovari

Subependymoma: a case report with ultrastructural study.

A case history illustrating the potential clinical significance of subependymoma is presented. Fine structural studies indicate that the tumor is composed of cells having the cytoplasmic features of ependyma, astrocytes, and transitional cells. Its composition and structure are alike those in the adult mammalian subependymal layer.

Congo red birefringent structures in the hypothalamus in senile dementia of the Alzheimer type.

Serial cryostat sections of hypothalamus from four cases of Alzheimer-type dementia and four controls were stained with Congo red and examined for birefringence. Green birefringence and dichroism was associated with (a) neurofibrillary tangles, which were most numerous at the level of the tuberomammillary nucleus where they were found in large acetylcholinesterase-positive neurons; (b) neuropil processes within tangle fields; (c) a few plaque cores in the mammillary body; (d) spicules at the ependyma of the third ventricle, and (e) blood vessels. Birefringence (e) had different properties from

Tumor of the tongue containing heterotopic brain tissue.

A polypoid tumor containing astrocytic glia and ependyma was excised from the base of the tongue of a 3-month-old infant. Neuroid elements were identified immunocytochemically and by means of electron microscopy. We attribute this rare anomaly to displacement of brain tissue in early embryogenesis before closure of the palate.

Taenia crassiceps injection into the subarachnoid space of rats simulates radiological and morphological features of racemose neurocysticercosis.

PURPOSE: Neurocysticercosis is a major public health concern. Although its eradication appears feasible, the disease remains endemic in developing countries and has emerged again in Europe and in the USA. Basic studies on neurocysticercosis are needed to better understand the pathophysiologic mechanisms and, consequently, to improve treatment perspectives. Much has been published on experimental parenchymal neurocysticercosis, but there are no experimental models of racemose neurocysticercosis. METHODS: Cysts of Taenia crassiceps were injected into the subarachnoid space of 11 rats. After 4 m

Blood-brain barrier disruption during spontaneous canine visceral leishmaniasis.

Visceral leishmaniasis is a complex disease caused by Leishmania infantum, and in dogs, besides the classical symptoms, there are descriptions of inflammatory alterations in the brain. Brain inflammation is a strictly controlled process, and as the brain counts on the efficiency of the blood-brain barrier (BBB), we aimed to assess BBB integrity in dogs with spontaneous visceral leishmaniasis. Therefore, we evaluated markers in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and in brain tissue related to BBB disruption and brain inflammation. Elevated albumin quota revealed BBB breakdown, corroborated by increa

Host induction by transplanted neural stem cells in the spinal cord: further evidence for an adult spinal cord neurogenic niche.

AIM: To explore the hypothesis that grafts of exogenous stem cells in the spinal cord of athymic rats or rats with transgenic motor neuron disease can induce endogenous stem cells and initiate intrinsic repair mechanisms that can be exploited in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis therapeutics. MATERIALS & METHODS: Human neural stem cells (NSCs) were transplanted into the lower lumbar spinal cord of healthy rats or rats with transgenic motor neuron disease to explore whether signals related to stem cells can initiate intrinsic repair mechanisms in normal and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis subjects.

Effect of rat subarachnoid hemorrhage on serotonin innervation of the cerebral ventricular wall and serotonin neurons of the ventral surface of the brain stem: an immunohistochemical study.

The effect of subarachnoid hemorrhage on serotonin (5-HT) innervation of the cerebral ventricles and on 5-HT neurons in the ventral surface of the brain stem was studied immunohistochemically in the rat. Subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) was induced by injection of autologous arterial blood into the cisterna magna. In normal and sham-operated animals, the entire ependyma of the ventricles was supplied with 5-HT-immunoreactive supraependymal nerves. The ependyma in the dorsal third ventricle received the most dense innervation. 5-HT neurons on the surface of the brain stem were found in the median

Heterotopic brain of the tongue.

A 6-week-old male infant with lingual mass suffered from feeding difficulty and respiratory distress. Resected specimens revealed brain tissue composed of astroglia, oligodendroglia, ependyma, choroid plexus, neuronal cells, and primitive cells but no other elements suggestive of teratoma, therefore it was diagnosed as heterotopic brain of the tongue.

Benign ependymal cyst of the pons.

Clinical presentation, radiological aspects, surgical treatment and histology of a case of an ependyma-lined cyst of the pons are depicted. Slight psychomotor retardation and long-standing neurological signs associated with a marked dolichocephalic skull and right aortic arch suggest a congenital anomaly. Differential diagnosis of cystic lesions in the posterior fossa is discussed.

Design of a Stem Cell-Based Therapy for Ependymal Repair in Hydrocephalus Associated With Germinal Matrix Hemorrhages.

BACKGROUND: In preterm birth germinal matrix hemorrhages (GMHs) and the consequent posthemorrhagic hydrocephalus (PHH), the neuroepithelium/ependyma development is disrupted. This work is aimed to explore the possibilities of ependymal repair in GMH/PHH using a combination of neural stem cells, ependymal progenitors (EpPs), and mesenchymal stem cells. METHODS: GMH/PHH was induced in 4-day-old mice using collagenase, blood, or blood serum injections. PHH severity was characterized 2 weeks later using magnetic resonance, immunofluorescence, and protein expression quantification with mass spectr

Colloid cyst of the third cerebral ventricle with an embryological remnant consistent with paraphysis cerebri in an adult human.

The histogenesis of colloid cysts of the third ventricle remains unsettled. Initial theories favored a neuroepithelial (paraphysis, ependyma, choroid plexus) origin and some investigators based on morphologic analysis have offered an alternative endodermal source. We report a case of colloid cyst of the third ventricle arising in association with a remnant which we believe corresponds to the paraphysis cerebri in man.

Anatomical, molecular and pathological consideration of the circumventricular organs.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Circumventricular organs (CVOs) are a diverse group of specialised structures characterized by peculiar vascular and position around the third and fourth ventricles of the brain. In humans, these organs are present during the fetal period and some become vestigial after birth. Some, such as the pineal gland (PG), subcommissural organ (SCO) and organum vasculosum of the lamina terminalis (OVLT), which are located around the third ventricle, might be the site of origin of periventricular tumours. In contrast to humans, CVOs are present in the adult rat and can be dissecte

Margins of control: ventricular brain borders as architects in central nervous system autoimmunity.

While multiple sclerosis research has long centered on focal demyelinating lesions, it is increasingly recognized that there are distinct, surface-in gradients of diffuse pathology that exist in regions abutting the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), such as the subpial cortex and periventricular parenchyma. While subpial pathology is thought to possess a relationship with tertiary lymphoid tissues (TLTs) in the meninges, less is known about the pathogenesis of diffuse periventricular pathology. Emerging evidence suggests that periventricular damage may reflect more than passive exposure to inflammato

Fetal brain damage in congenital hydrocephalus.

BACKGROUND: Congenital hydrocephalus (HCP) is a developmental brain disorder characterized by the abnormal accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid within the ventricles. It is caused by genetic and acquired factors that start during early embryogenesis with disruption of the neurogerminal areas. As might be expected, early-onset hydrocephalus alters the process of brain development leading to irreparable neurological deficit. A primary alteration of the ependyma/neural stem cells (affecting vesicle trafficking and abnormal cell junctions) leads to its loss or denudation and translocation of neural
