Acute toxicity of 6 neonicotinoid insecticides to freshwater invertebrates.

Neonicotinoids are a group of insecticides commonly used in agriculture. Due to their high water solubility, neonicotinoids can be transported to surface waters and have the potential to be toxic to aquatic life. The present study assessed and compared the acute (48- or 96-h) toxicity of 6 neonicotinoids (acetamiprid, clothianidin, dinotefuran, imidacloprid, thiacloprid, and thiamethoxam) to 21 laboratory-cultured and field-collected aquatic invertebrates spanning 10 aquatic arthropod orders. Test conditions mimicked species' habitat, with lentic taxa exposed under static conditions, and lotic

Environmental DNA Metabarcoding Reveals Diversity and Spatiotemporal Variations of Benthic Invertebrates in Hun River Basin, China.

Freshwater biodiversity underpins ecosystem functioning and human well-being. As the most diverse taxonomic groups in freshwater ecosystems, benthic invertebrates are widely employed as bioindicators for aquatic monitoring and health assessment. In this study, environmental DNA (eDNA) metabarcoding was used to reveal the diversity and spatiotemporal variations in benthic invertebrates in the Hun River Basin (the middle and upper reaches). Sampling was conducted in spring, summer, and autumn, with sites arranged to cover both anthropogenic activities and watershed environmental conditions. A to

Methylmercury in caddisflies and mayflies: Influences of water and sediment chemistry.

Quantifying methylmercury (MeHg) concentrations and uptake at the base of the food web is useful for assessing mercury exposure risk to higher trophic level organisms. Higher MeHg concentrations near the base of the food web may result in more MeHg exposure and accumulation in higher trophic organisms. Here, we analyze MeHg in caddisflies, mayflies, lake water, and sediment collected from two temperate lakes and one brook in Kejimkujik National Park, Nova Scotia, Canada. Overall, caddisfly larvae MeHg (15.38-276.96 ng/g; n = 29) was not significantly correlated with water chemistry. Whereas ma

Methylmercury-total mercury ratios in predator and primary consumer insects from Adirondack streams (New York, USA).

Mercury (Hg) is a global pollutant that affects biota in remote settings due to atmospheric deposition of inorganic Hg, and its conversion to methylmercury (MeHg), the bioaccumulating and toxic form. Characterizing biotic MeHg is important for evaluating aquatic ecosystem responses to changes in Hg inputs. Aquatic insects possess many qualities desired for MeHg biomonitoring, but are not widely used, largely because of limited information regarding percentages of total mercury (THg) composed of MeHg (i.e., MeHg%) in various taxa. Here, we examine taxonomic, spatial, and seasonal variation in M

Chronic Toxicities of Neonicotinoids to Nymphs of the Common New Zealand Mayfly Deleatidium spp.

Neonicotinoid insecticides have been shown to have high chronic toxicity relative to acute toxicity, and therefore short-term toxicity tests ≤96 h in duration may underestimate their environmental risks. Among nontarget aquatic invertebrates, insects of the orders Diptera and Ephemeroptera have been found to be the most sensitive to neonicotinoids. To undertake a more accurate assessment of the risks posed by neonicotinoids to freshwater ecosystems, more data are needed from long-term tests employing the most sensitive taxa. Using nymphs of the common New Zealand mayfly genus Deleatidium spp.,

Space colonization by branching trachea explains the morphospace of a simple respiratory organ.

Branching morphogenesis helps increase the efficiency of gas and liquid transport in many animal organs. Studies in several model organisms have highlighted the molecular and cellular complexity behind branching morphogenesis. To understand this complexity, computational models have been developed with the goal of identifying the "major rules" that globally explain the branching patterns. These models also guide further experimental exploration of the biological processes that execute and maintain these rules. In this paper we introduce the tracheal gills of mayfly (Ephemeroptera) larvae as a

Experimental manipulation of freshwater wetland hydroperiod alters litter decomposition and macroinvertebrate assemblage structure.

Climate-driven shifts in hydrological cycling are altering freshwater wetlands globally and may disrupt carbon processing, yet the impacts on litter decomposition and the underlying drivers are still poorly understood. We experimentally manipulated hydroperiod in twelve wetlands in Georgia, U.S. to include permanent, temporary, and dry ponds from 2018 to 2021. Litterbags were deployed and collected at early (30-day), mid (60-day), and late (90-day) sampling intervals to quantify detrital processing including decomposition rate (n = 343) and macroinvertebrate assemblages (n = 148). Toxic Effects of Fine Plant Powder Impregnated With Avermectins on Mosquito Larvae and Nontarget Aquatic Invertebrates.

The toxic effects of an avermectin-impregnated fine plant powder (AIFP) against larval Aedes aegypti L. (Diptera: Culicidae), Culex modestus Ficalbi (Diptera: Culicidae), and Anopheles messeae Falleroni (Diptera: Culicidae), as well as selected nontarget aquatic invertebrates, were studied under laboratory conditions. The possibility of trophic transfer of avermectins (AVMs) through the food chain and their toxic effects on predaceous species fed AIFP-treated mosquito larvae was also evaluated. Among mosquitoes, Anopheles messeae were the most sensitive to AIFP, while Cx. modestus exhibited th

Daily stream samples reveal highly complex pesticide occurrence and potential toxicity to aquatic life.

Transient, acutely toxic concentrations of pesticides in streams can go undetected by fixed-interval sampling programs. Here we compare temporal patterns in occurrence of current-use pesticides in daily composite samples to those in weekly composite and weekly discrete samples of surface water from 14 small stream sites. Samples were collected over 10-14 weeks at 7 stream sites in each of the Midwestern and Southeastern United States. Samples were analyzed for over 200 pesticides and degradates by direct aqueous injection liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry. Nearly 2 and 3 time

Preliminary aquatic risk assessment of imidacloprid after application in an experimental rice plot.

The potential aquatic risk of application of the neonicotinoid insecticide imidacloprid for aphid control in rice was assessed. To this end, imidacloprid was applied as Confidor(®) 200 SC at the recommended field dose of 100g a.i./ha to a Portuguese rice plot. Subsequently, fate of the test compound in water and potential effects of water samples on a battery of test species were determined. As compared to the first-tier predicted environmental concentrations (PECs) calculated using MED-Rice (around 30µg/L depending on the scenario used) and US-EPA (78µg/L) simulations, the actual peak concent

Ultrastructure, development, and homology of insect embryonic cuticles.

Ultrastructure and deposition of the cuticles secreted by embryos representing eight insect orders were examined by transmission and scanning electron microscopy. Embryos of the apterygote silverfish Thermobia domestica deposit two embryonic cuticles. Deposition of the first (EC1) is initiated at the beginning of appendage development when the intercalary segment and the neural groove are clearly visible. This cuticle lacks surface microsculpture and consists of an outer epicuticle and an underlying fibrous layer, thought to represent procuticle. At the time of dorsal closure, deposition of a

Exploring the effects of plastic pollution on benthic macroinvertebrates in a stream mesocosm experiment.

Most plastic pollution is hypothesized to be transported through urban rivers toward sinks like lakes and oceans, yet its effect on ecological communities within these systems remains poorly understood. Additionally, we do not know how changes in flow alter the exposure landscape of biota to plastic-potentially impacting effects. Here, we conducted a 28-day flow-through stream mesocosm experiment (length: 2 m, width: 0.4 m, depth: 0.3 m; N = 8, n = 2 replicate streams per treatment) to investigate the effects of plastic pollution and stream flow on the density, emergence, diversity, and functi

Biodiversity surrogates in freshwater environments: What determines their effectiveness?

Biodiversity surrogates, such as the Indicator Species Approach (ISA) and Higher-Taxon Approach (HTA), offer cost-effective alternatives to species-level identification. However, their reliability varies across studies. This article presents a large-scale evaluation of ISA and HTA using nearly 10,000 freshwater macroinvertebrate assemblages. We focused on two common surrogates: the EPT group (Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera, Trichoptera) as a proxy for the entire macroinvertebrate community (ISA), and family-level data as a proxy for species-level data (HTA). We tested whether sampling effort, the s

Noxious newts and their natural enemies: Experimental effects of tetrodotoxin exposure on trematode parasites and aquatic macroinvertebrates.

The dermal glands of many amphibian species secrete toxins or other noxious substances as a defense strategy against natural enemies. Newts in particular possess the potent neurotoxin tetrodotoxin (TTX), for which the highest concentrations are found in species within the genus Taricha. Adult Taricha are hypothesized to use TTX as a chemical defense against vertebrate predators such as garter snakes (Thamnophis spp.). However, less is known about how TTX functions to defend aquatic-developing newt larvae against natural enemies, including trematode parasites and aquatic macroinvertebrates. Her

Modeling the effects of conservation practices on stream health.

Anthropogenic activities such as agricultural practices can have large effects on the ecological components and overall health of stream ecosystems. Therefore, having a better understanding of those effects and relationships allows for better design of mitigating strategies. The objectives of this study were to identify influential stream variables that correlate with macroinvertebrate indices using biophysical and statistical models. The models developed were later used to evaluate the impact of three agricultural management practices on stream integrity. Our study began with the development

Active feeding of downstream migrating juvenile pink salmon (Oncorhynchus gorbuscha) revealed in a large Barents Sea river using diet and stable isotope analysis.

The recent, rapid spreading of non-native pink salmon Oncorhynchus gorbuscha in the North Atlantic area has raised concerns about their possible negative impacts on native salmonid species. Potential interactions include competition for food resources during the short freshwater phase of juvenile O. gorbuscha, but little is known about their feeding behavior in the newly occupied North Atlantic rivers. Using stable isotope and stomach content analyses, patterns of freshwater feeding of non-native O. gorbuscha fry were studied in a large Fennoscandian river, the Teno, that discharges to the Bar

Can't take the heat: Temperature-enhanced toxicity in the mayfly Isonychia bicolor exposed to the neonicotinoid insecticide imidacloprid.

Neonicotinoid insecticide usage has increased globally in recent decades. Neonicotinoids, such as imidacloprid, are potent insect neurotoxicants that may pose a threat to non-target aquatic organisms, such as aquatic insects. In nature, insects typically live in thermally fluctuating conditions, which may significantly alter both contaminant exposures and affects. Here we investigate the relationship between temperature and time-to-effect for imidacloprid toxicity with the aquatic insect Isonychia bicolor, a lotic mayfly. Additionally, we examined the mechanisms driving temperature-enhanced to

Consistent differences in tissue oxygen levels across 15 insect species reflect a balance between oxygen supply and demand and highlight a hitherto unknown adaptation for extracting sufficient oxygen from water.

Animals, including insects, need oxygen for aerobic respiration and eventually asphyxiate without it. Aerobic respiration, however, produces reactive oxygen species (ROS), which contribute to dysfunction and aging. Animals appear to balance risks of asphyxiation and ROS by regulating internal oxygen relatively low and stable, but sufficient levels. How much do levels vary among species, and how does variation depend on environment and life history? We predicted that lower internal oxygen levels occur in insects with either limited access to environmental oxygen (i.e., insects dependent on aqua

Assessing mercury exposure and effects to American dippers in headwater streams near mining sites.

To evaluate mercury (Hg) exposure and possible adverse effects of Hg on American dipper (Cinclus mexicanus) reproduction, we collected eggs and nestling feathers and the larval/nymph form of three Orders of aquatic macroinvertebrates (Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera and Trichoptera = EPT) important in their diet from three major headwater tributaries of the upper Willamette River, Oregon in 2002. The Coast Fork Willamette River is contaminated with Hg due to historical cinnabar (HgS) mining at the Black Butte Mine; the Row River is affected by past gold-mining operations located within the Bohemia M

Host range of Microsporidia MB in aquatic macrofauna inhabiting Anopheles breeding sites.

Microsporidia MB, a recently discovered endosymbiont Anopheles arabiensis mosquitoes, shows great potential as a malaria-blocking tool due to its Plasmodium-blocking phenotype. The symbiont utilizes vertical (mother-to-offspring) and horizontal (sexual) transmission routes to propagate across anopheline populations. Microsporidia MB occurs throughout the Anopheles life cycle, with no evidence to date of the existence of a secondary host. In this study, we conducted a comprehensive molecular screening of Microsporidia MB in aquatic macrofauna associated with Anopheles larval habitats to determi
