NPC is the most widely found malignant tumor in the head and neck region in Indonesia. Chemoradiation therapy for NPC can induce swallowing disorders (dysphagia) that adversely affects a patients quality of life. This study aimed to assess the swallowing process by flexible endoscopic evaluation of swallowing in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma after chemoradiation. Thirty-nine patients with NPC who had chemoradiation therapy more than one month previously underwent flexible endoscopic evaluation of swallowing and were assessed for oral transport time, sensation, standing-secretion, pre-

Surgeons determine the treatment method for patients with epiglottis obstruction based on its severity, often by estimating the obstruction severity (using three obstruction degrees) from the examination of drug-induced sleep endoscopy images. However, the use of obstruction degrees is inadequate and fails to correspond to changes in respiratory airflow. Current artificial intelligence image technologies can effectively address this issue. To enhance the accuracy of epiglottis obstruction assessment and replace obstruction degrees with obstruction ratios, this study developed a computer vision

Congenital epiglottic cyst is a rare embryonic disease. As a congenital laryngeal mucocele, its clinical manifestations include repeated sudden dyspneic respiration and even suffocation accompanied by laryngeal stridor after birth. During food intake, bucking and vomiting is a key feature. Delay in diagnosis and treatment of the disease affects growth and the development of neonatorum leading to suffocation and death. This study was designed to investigate the safety of anesthesia in infants with congenital epiglottic cyst during operation to reduce the occurrence of its complications. The tre

Dermoid cysts are developmental anomalies that occur during midline fusion in embryological life. It is known that they can also be acquired as a result of traumatic and iatrogenic implantation. Laryngeal involvement of dermoid cysts has been reported very rarely in the literature. This report presents a case with multiple dermoid cysts originating from the epiglottis. A 59-year-old male patient was admitted to our clinic with complaints of foreign body sensation in the throat and dysphagia. Multiple cystic lesions originating from the epiglottis were observed in the laryngeal examination of t

We describe a case of laryngeal angioleiomyoma, discuss its characteristic features and management, and provide a review of the literature, to improve clinical diagnosis and treatment. We report the oldest patient with a laryngeal angioleiomyoma to date and analyze the clinicopathological features reported in the literature. To the best of our knowledge, a total of 36 cases have been described in the English and Chinese medical literature (including our case). The male-to-female ratio was 5:1 and the mean age was 53.89 years. The most common laryngeal site was the supraglottic region (23 cases

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study is to explore the effects of the angle of epiglottis (Aepi) on phonation and resonance in excised canine larynges.
METHODS: The anatomic Aepi was measured for 14 excised canine larynges as a control. Then, the Aepis were manually adjusted to 60° and 90° in each larynx. Aerodynamic and acoustic parameters, including mean flow rate, sound pressure level, jitter, shimmer, fundamental frequency (F0), and formants (F1'-F4'), were measured with a subglottal pressure of 1.5 kPa. Simple linear regression analysis between acoustic and aerodynamic parameters and the Ae

We report a case of folding of the epiglottis during endotracheal intubation, an unusual complication of intubation. A 36-year-old female patient underwent laryngeal microsurgery for a vocal polyp. Following anesthesia induction, an endotracheal tube (ID = 6.0 mm, cuffed) was advanced through an intubating laryngoscope via the oropharyngeal route. At the beginning of the surgery, the otolaryngologist noted that the patient's epiglottis was folded under the view of the surgical laryngoscopy. The endotracheal tube was adjusted immediately by withdrawing it 0.5 cm with the cuff deflated. Slight e

We operated on 38 adult patients with congenital ankyloglossia with deviation of the epiglottis and larynx. The results were as follows. 1) Most patients had Angle's class III malocclusion, irregular alignment of the upper teeth, and high hard palate. 2) Fifty percent of the patients in our study population had obstructive respiratory failure. Their vital capacity increased significantly after the operation, but changes of forced expiratory volume in 1 second were not prominent. 3) Subjective symptoms of this disease were stiffness of the shoulders, a cold feeling in the extremities, an obstru

A study of 87 cases of carcinoma of the vallecula and the epiglottis (margin and vestibulum) with the common feature of an essentially identical surgical technique: supraglottal horizontal laryngectomy. In the case of vallecular lesions (34 cases from T1 to T4) this operation, performed from below upwards with lymph node dissection and associated with postoperative radiotherapy, gave oncological results identical to those of total laryngectomy and better than those of other protocols based upon radiotherapy. From a functional standpoint, despite two deaths due to bronchopneumonia, with careful

OBJECTIVES: The growth and development of the epiglottis and preepiglottic space (PES) of the human larynx as it acquires the vocal tract were investigated.
METHODS: Three newborns, one infant, four children (2, 7, 8, and 12 years old), and two adult normal larynges were investigated and compared using the whole organ serial section technique.
RESULTS: The newborn PES occupied a small area just anterior to the epiglottis. It was composed of immature adipose tissue and areolar tissue. The epiglottis lay on a somewhat horizontal axis and is partially obscured behind the hyoid bone. The hyoid b

OBJECTIVES: Comparative histoanatomy regarding the evolution of epiglottis and preepiglottic space (PES) of primate larynx as the supralaryngeal vocal tract (SVT) is acquired was investigated.
METHODS: Two lemur, one galago, two macaque, two gorilla, and two chimpanzee normal larynges were investigated and compared with human larynges using the whole-organ serial section technique.
RESULTS: Nonhuman primates with the limited pharyngeal space of SVT (lemurs, galago, and macaques, phyletic distant relative of humans) did not have PES. Their epiglottis was composed of cartilage that is not very

Laryngeal cysts are rare lesions of the larynx that are often described on incidental discovery. We report an unusual presentation of a large ductal cyst located on the laryngeal surface of the epiglottis. The patient presented with a low tone voice while displaying bilateral normal appearing vocal cords with normal mobility. Computed tomography scans and flexible laryngoscopy showed a round supraglottic mass approximately 2 cm in diameter on the right lateral laryngeal surface of the epiglottis. The mass was removed surgically during microsuspension laryngoscopy with excision of the mucocele

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the subthalamic nucleus (STN) alleviates motor disability of patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). Mental changes and other adverse events are common, but typically transient. Severe complications such as intracerebral haemorrhage or infection are rare, but 6 of 73 patients who underwent STN-DBS died of pneumonia, cardiac failure or pulmonary embolism. We describe a patient with PD who had sudden respiratory difficulty due to a fixed epiglottis after STN-DBS. This symptom was confirmed to be related to STN stimulation on fibre-optic examination of the larynx.

OBJECTIVES: We conducted a histologic examination and measured the tension on the epiglottis to determine how dehiscence of the epiglottis can be prevented after epiglottic closure surgery.
METHODS: We classified configurations of the epiglottis into flat, intermediate, and omega types and studied the histology of each type. We also measured the tension in each of these 3 morphological types on 4 regions of the epiglottis (upper, middle, and lower points, and the cuneiform tubercle) at 3 different times: before incision, after median incision, and after reversed-Y incision.
RESULTS: No histo

We report a rare case of dyspnea due to enlargement of the epiglottis in a severely immunocompromised patient. The child underwent a previous tracheostomy at another hospital because of respiratory distress under the diagnosis of acute epiglottitis. The patient was subsequently decannulated without incident. One year later, the child developed a new episode of dyspnea with inspiratory stridor. A new tracheostomy was neccessary, and a biopsy specimen of the enlarged epiglottis was taken to confirm the diagnosis of graft-vs-host disease. The therapeutic measures in these situations are discussed

PURPOSE: To evaluate the radiologic characteristic of acute inflammation of the epiglottis and supraglottic structures in adults.
METHODS: The clinical and radiographic findings in 27 adult patients with epiglottitis (average age, 43 years; range, 28 to 81 years) were compared with those of a control group of asymptomatic subjects (n = 15; average age, 48 years; range, 24 to 79 years). Unusual clinical aspects in the current series included two patients who were positive for human immunodeficiency virus, 1 with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome and Kaposi sarcoma, 3 with emphysematous epiglo

A 3 month old girl with congenital absence of the epiglottis presents with inspiratory stridor. Over the next 8 years frank obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) develops, confirmed by polysomnography. She has no difficulty in swallowing or phonation as assessed clinically and with barium swallow. This suggests that the epiglottis may help stabilize the upper airway, and any role in swallowing or phonation may, in its absence, be compensated by other mechanisms.
