Effect of vitrectomy on epiretinal membranes after endogenous fungal endophthalmitis.

Pars plana vitrectomy was used to remove proliferative membranes caused by endogenous fungal endophthalmitis in 3 patients (3 eyes). Tractional retinal detachment was present in all. In 2 eyes, a fibrovascular membrane originated in the optic nerve head and was connected to a full-thickness chorioretinal scar. In the other, a thick preretinal membrane was found in the macula, with total retinal detachment. In all eyes, the epiretinal membrane was successfully removed and the retina reattached. Visual outcome depended on the site of the chorioretinal scar. We advocate pars plana vitrectomy as t

Optical coherence tomography characteristics of epiretinal membranes in neurofibromatosis 2.

Neurofibromatosis 2 is a neurocutaneous disorder that demonstrates unique ophthalmic manifestations. Several authors have noted a higher than expected incidence of epiretinal membranes in this population. In this brief case series, the authors document a series of optical coherence tomography (OCT) scans performed on three patients with neurofibromatosis 2 that demonstrated epiretinal membranes with atypical and distinctive characteristics. The membranes were unusually thick, with rolled edges extending into the vitreoretinal interface. The appearance of these membranes was distinct enough to

[Comparative immunohistochemical studies of epiretinal membranes in proliferative vitreoretinal diseases].

Epiretinal membranes are a fibrocellular tissue whose cellular components are macrophages, glial cells, retinal pigment epithelial cells and fibroblasts. In our immunohistochemical study on epiretinal membranes in proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR), proliferative diabetic retinopathy, macular pucker, uveitis and after intraocular silicone oil tamponade we analyzed the cellular growth patterns of these histogenetically different cell types on serial sections of paraffin-embedded and frozen material. In addition, the topographic distribution of fibronectin was analyzed and the localization of

Perioperative intraretinal fluid observed using optical coherence tomography in the epiretinal membrane.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative intraretinal fluid (IRF) is reportedly associated with visual outcomes after epiretinal membrane (ERM) surgery. However, preoperative IRF is common, and persistent IRF would have different impact on visual function from postoperative newly developed IRF. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the incidence rate and clinical implications of perioperative IRF in ERM. METHODS: Medical records of patients who underwent vitrectomy for idiopathic ERM between January 2014 and January 2017 were reviewed retrospectively. The incidence of IRF was analyzed using optical coherence t
