Mesothelioma is a highly aggressive tumour associated with asbestos exposure and is histologically classified into three types: epithelioid-type, sarcomatoid-type and biphasic-type. The prognosis of mesothelioma patients is poor and there is no effective molecular-targeting therapy as yet. ERC/mesothelin is a glycoprotein that is highly expressed on several types of cancers including epithelioid mesothelioma, but also expressed on normal mesothelial cells. This is a predicted reason why there is no clinically approved therapeutic antibody targeting ERC/mesothelin. In the present study, we focu

Fifty-four lymph node biopsy specimens from 36 patients with lymphoplasmacytic/lymphoplasmacytoid immunocytoma with a high content of epithelioid cells (LPICep) were studied by light microscopy using conventional histologic and immunohistochemical techniques. Three other patients with extranodal involvement only were also included in the study. Of a total of 39 patients, 31 had the polymorphic subtype, six the lymphoplasmacytoid subtype, and two the lymphoplasmacytic subtype. Cellular composition and histologic structure are described in detail as a basis for discriminating LPICep from similar

Dedifferentiated liposarcoma is one of the most common sarcoma types in adults with a predilection for the retroperitoneum. We have recently encountered 6 cases of DDL composed predominantly of rounded, rhabdoid or epithelioid cells mimicking rhabdoid melanoma, epithelioid rhabdomyosarcoma or undifferentiated carcinoma. Patients were 5 males and one female aged 64 to 81 years (median, 68). Tumors originated in the retroperitoneum (n=5; 3 in the psoas muscle) and deep soft tissue of the thigh (n=1). All 3 patients with follow-up died of metastatic disease within 4 to 8 months. Preoperative biop

INTRODUCTION: Perivascular epithelioid cell tumors (PEComas) are rare mesenchymal neoplasms, and primary pancreatic PEComas are exceptionally uncommon. Owing to their rarity, the prognostic significance of their pathological features remains unclear. We report a resected case of pancreatic PEComa and review the literature to further characterize its clinicopathological features.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 72-year-old woman presented with a gradually enlarging, 63-mm hypervascular tumor in the pancreatic body. Contrast-enhanced CT and MRI demonstrated a well-circumscribed hypervascular mass with cen

Perivascular epithelioid cell tumor (PEComa) is a rare mesenchymal neoplasm characterized by a unique dual differentiation toward smooth muscle and melanocytic lineages. While PEComas can arise in various gynecologic organs, primary malignant ovarian PEComa is exceptionally rare and shows a wide spectrum of clinical behaviors. We report a case of a rapidly progressive primary ovarian malignant PEComa with an extremely poor prognosis. A 73-year-old woman presented with fever and malaise. A CT scan incidentally revealed a left ovarian tumor, for which she was referred to our department. Tumor ma

Perivascular epithelioid cell tumors (PEComas) have unique morphology comprised perivascular epitheloid cells and express both melanocytic and smooth muscle cell markers. Gynecological PEComas account for approximately 25% of all PEComas, and in most cases, the primary site of the tumor is the uterine body. Ovarian PEComa is exceptional. Here, we report a case of primary malignant PEComa of ovary in a 38 years female.

Introduction: The synchronous occurrence of melanomas of varying histological types is an uncommon event, with reported incidences ranging from 0.2% to 8.6%. Case Report: We present the case of a patient diagnosed with Stage IIB nodular melanoma and Stage IIIC epithelioid cell melanoma within a 3-month period. After surgical excision of both lesions, lymph node enlargement was observed in the obturator region, indicating metastatic spread. As a result, combined immunotherapy with nivolumab and ipilimumab was initiated. Nivolumab and ipilimumab were administered at doses of 1 and 3 mg/kg, respe

We compared 18 F-FAPI and 18 F-FDG PET/CT findings of metastatic perivacular epitheliod cell tumor in a 23-year-old woman. Apart from showing strong uptake of a left upper lung mass that showed moderate uptake on 18 F-FDG, 18 F-FAPI PET/CT additionally presented hypermetabolism in diffuse multifocal lesion throughout the body. This case suggests that 18 F-FAPI PET/CT might play a more beneficial role than 18 F-FDG PET/CT in identifying and assessing the extent of perivascular epithelioid cell tumors.

INTRODUCTION: Epithelioid sarcoma is a rare soft tissue malignancy that usually presents in the distal extremities along fascial planes, aponeuroses or tendon sheaths. Very rarely, it presents as a primary or metastatic lesion of the head neck.
METHODS: Chart review and comprehensive literature review using PubMed and Google Scholar.
RESULTS: A 17-year-old non-smoker was referred for evaluation of an ulcerative lesion of the right anterior-lateral tongue, progressing over several months. Incisional biopsy was concerning for squamous cell carcinoma. He underwent partial glossectomy and bilate

Chest CT images were acquired in a 67-year-old man to evaluate a left lung mass revealed by chest radiography. The image findings suggested possible pulmonary malignancy. FDG PET/CT was performed for staging, which showed the abnormally increased activity in the lung mass with hypermetabolic lymph node. Pathology from the biopsy confirmed malignant perivascular epithelioid cell tumor.

BACKGROUND: The perivascular epithelioid cell tumour (PEComa) family of tumours mainly includes renal and hepatic angiomyolipomas, pulmonary lymphangioleiomyomatosis and clear cell "sugar" tumour of the lung. Several uncommon tumours with similar morphological and immunophenotypical characteristics arising at a variety of sites (abdominal cavity, digestive tract, retroperitoneum, skin, soft tissue and bones) are also included in the PEComa family and are referred to as PEComas not otherwise specified.
CASE SUMMARY: We present a 37-year-old female patient who underwent resection of an 8.5 cm ×

BACKGROUND: Perivascular epithelioid cell tumors are rare mesenchymal tumors composed of histologically and immunohistochemically distinctive perivascular epithelioid cells. They are considered ubiquitous tumors and have been described in different organs, but gastro-intestinal PEComas are diseases of extreme rarity.
METHODS: We report a case of a 51-year-old woman, without a medical history of tuberous sclerosis complex, affected by abdominal PEComa, adhering tightly to the jejunal loop and to the spleen.
RESULTS: During the surgical operation, a large abdominal mass was found, and surgical

INTRODUCTION: Perivascular epithelioid cell tumor (PECOMA) is a rare mesenchymal neoplasm which expresses both myogenic and melanocytic markers showing a benign course, although malignant tumors have also been reported. To date there are approximately 33 cases of published hepatic pecomas.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: We describe a 47-year-old man with a 27-year past medical history of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) who underwent left liver lobectomy due to a liver pecoma. His postoperative course complicated with infection, thrombosis of hepatic artery and liver ischemia as well as drug fever.

Perivascular epithelioid cell tumors (PEComas) are a family of mesenchymal neoplasms that have smooth muscle and melanocytic differentiation. They can be sporadic or associated with tuberous sclerosis complex and commonly present in the kidney as angiomyolipoma or in the lung as pulmonary clear cell sugar tumors or lymphangioleiomyomatosis. However, they can present at any visceral or soft tissue site. They usually have a benign clinical course, but rarely can behave in a malignant fashion. Most PEComas demonstrate abnormalities of TSC2, but a recently described subset harbor TFE3 rearrangemen

We report a primary central nervous system (CNS) perivascular epithelioid cell tumor (PEComa) in a middle-aged female patient. The tumor occurred in suprasellar location with secondary extension into the sella turcica. The patient presented with intracranial hemorrhage and an altered level of consciousness. The tumor had morphologic features matching those of other previously described TFE3-translocated PEComas, including epithelioid morphology, diffuse and strong nuclear immunoreactivity for TFE3, and minimal staining with myoid markers. The TFE3 break-apart FISH testing showed a slight split

Perivascular epithelioid cell tumors (PEComas) are unusual mesenchymal neoplasms composed of histologically and immunohistochemically distinct perivascular epithelioid cells (PECs). Although PEComas have the potential to behave in a malignant fashion, malignant PEComas arising from the retroperitoneum are extremely rare. A 68-year-old woman presented with a painful palpable mass in her left upper abdomen. Computed tomography of the abdomen showed a 9 cm sized heterogeneous mass in left para-aortic space and multiple hypervascular nodules in the liver. (18)F-fludeoxyglucose-PET/CT showed multif

BACKGROUND: The diagnosis of ectopic pituitary hormone secretion requires abnormally high circulating hormone levels, absence of a pituitary tumor, and localization of the hormone in question to the extrapituitary malignant neoplasm. No case of a malignant solid tumor producing prolactin has been documented thus far.
CASE REPORT: A 47-year-old woman presented with amenorrhea and galactorrhea of 3-year duration. Serum prolactin ranged from 300 to > 900 ng/mL, and other pituitary and thyroid indices were normal, including testing for macroprolactinemia. Pituitary magnetic resonance imaging reve

Gastrointestinal stromal tumors are a group of mesenchymal tumors arising from the wall of the gastrointestinal tract that are characterized by activating mutations in KIT or PDGFRA. Their proper recognition is important clinically because of their potential responsiveness to targeted therapies. We report a case of duodenal gastrointestinal stromal tumor with a highly unusual epithelioid morphology that had an appearance reminiscent of a steroid producing neoplasm, such as an adrenal cortical neoplasm or, alternatively, a renal cell carcinoma variant. The recognition of the current tumor as a
