Changes in the ideal body shape associated with adolescent rowing-ergometry performance following a 6-week training intervention: New scaling insights using three-dimensional allometry.

Scaling, to remove the effects of body size, is an important methodological approach for enabling an equitable comparison of performance differences between individuals who vary in anthropometric characteristics. Many previous studies using scaling in sport have done so based on only one or two anthropometric characteristics, with only one study to date adopting a three-dimensional approach. To apply a three-dimensional allometric model to rowing ergometer performance (REP) in adolescents, and to detect whether key 'scaling' parameters remain stable when scaling REP both before and after a 6-w

Comparison of oxygen uptake during cycle ergometry with and without functional electrical stimulation in patients with COPD: protocol for a randomised, single-blind, placebo-controlled, cross-over trial.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) has systemic repercussions that can lead to peripheral muscle dysfunction. Muscle atrophy reduces aerobic capacity, greatly limiting activities of daily living and quality of life. Pulmonary rehabilitation is the gold standard treatment for these patients, however, patients may not be able to reach sufficient training intensities for benefits to occur. Technologies such as functional electrical stimulation (FES) are currently being adapted and tested to enhance exercise training. We hypothesise that FES coupled with cycling (FES-cyclin

Effect of arm-ergometry versus treadmill supervised exercise on health-related quality of life and mental health in patients with peripheral artery disease: secondary outcomes from the ARMEX trial.

BACKGROUND: Peripheral artery disease (PAD) negatively affects walking performance, health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and mental health. Exercise training is recommended as a first-line treatment for PAD, with potential impact on all these outcomes, but the optimal program design is not completely ascertained. The aim of this study was to compare arm-ergometry (AEx) and treadmill supervised exercise training (TEx) on HRQoL and mental health in patients with PAD. METHODS: This was an ancillary study of the ARMEX trial, a single-center, single-blinded, parallel group, randomized clinical t

Nutrition and Exercise in Critical Illness Trial (NEXIS Trial): a protocol of a multicentred, randomised controlled trial of combined cycle ergometry and amino acid supplementation commenced early during critical illness.

INTRODUCTION: Survivors of critical illness often experience significant morbidities, including muscle weakness and impairments in physical functioning. This muscle weakness is associated with longer duration mechanical ventilation, greater hospital costs and increased postdischarge impairments in physical function, quality of life and survival. Compared with standard of care, the benefits of greater protein intake combined with structured exercise started early after the onset of critical illness remain uncertain. However, the combination of protein supplementation and exercise in other popul

Diastolic exercise stress testing in heart failure with preserved ejection fraction: The DEST-HF study.

AIMS: Pulmonary capillary wedge pressure (PAWP) ≥25 mmHg during bicycle ergometry is recommended to uncover occult heart failure with preserved ejection fraction. We hypothesized that PAWP increase would differ in available diastolic stress tests and that the margin of PAWP ≥25 mmHg would only be reliably achieved through ergometry. METHODS AND RESULTS: We conducted a prospective, single-arm study in patients with an intermediate risk for heart failure with preserved ejection fraction according to the ESC HFA-PEFF score. A total of 19 patients underwent four stress test modalities in randomiz

[The hemodynamic support of physical loading in patients with mitral valve prolapse].

Bicycle ergometry and echocardiographic studies were carried out in 29 patients aged 17-29 years with first revealed mitral valve prolapse (MVP) without any signs of mitral regurgitation. According to bicycle ergometry, the patients manifested changes in hemodynamics pointing to dysfunction of the cardiovascular system. Echocardiography discovered a reduction of the mass and a rise of the rate of contraction of the circular fibers of the left ventricle, evidence of the myocardial genesis of the hemodynamic changes. Comparison of the findings of bicycle ergometry and echocardiography allowed a

Restoration of peak vascular conductance after simulated microgravity by maximal exercise.

We sought to determine if (i) peak vascular conductance of the calf was reduced following prolonged exposure to simulated microgravity, and (ii) if maximal cycle ergometry performed at the end of microgravity exposure stimulated a restoration of peak calf vascular conductance. To do this, peak vascular conductance of the calf was recorded following ischaemic plantar flexion exercise to fatigue in seven men after 16 days of head-down tilt (HDT) under two conditions: (i) after one bout of maximal supine cycle ergometry completed 24 h prior to performance of ischaemic plantar flexion exercise, an

The six-minute walk--an adequate exercise test for pacemaker patients?

In many pacemaker patients bicycle and treadmill ergometry are not practicable. As an alternative, we performed a 6-minute walk on a 20-m corridor in 97 pacemaker patients, who were asked to walk as far as possible determining their speed by themselves. Results were compared with those of bicycle ergometry in 42 of these patients and with treadmill exercise of a group of 92 other pacemaker patients. In the 6-minute walk, performance and maximal heart rate were slightly lower (49 +/- 18 W; 96 +/- 23 beats/min) than in bicycle (57 +/- 16 W; 110 +/- 26 beats/min) and treadmill ergometry (50 +/- 3

[Standardized aerobic walking on the treadmill by healthy probands and patients with mitochondrial and non-mitochondrial myopathies].

Mitochondrial myopathies are characterized by an abnormal aerobic metabolism. The present study examines the serum lactate concentration during standardized aerobic treadmill ergometry and evaluates its relevance for the diagnosis of mitochondrial myopathies. The present study includes 50 volunteers without neuromuscular disorders (control group), 13 patients with mitochondrial, and 14 patients with non-mitochondrial neuromuscular disorders. All members of the control group were able to walk 15 minutes on the treadmill at a constant velocity of at least 5 km/h without exceeding the aerobic thr

[Rhythm and conduction disorders in alcoholic lesions of the heart].

Combined investigation (bicycle ergometry, daily ECG monitoring, electrophysiologic studies, coronarography and ventriculography) in 46 alcoholic patients established ventricular extrasystole, paroxysmal atrial fibrillation, atrioventricular block as well as reduced ejection fraction and increased end systolic ventricular volume in the majority of those. Daily ECG recording, bicycle ergometry and electrophysiologic studies proved to be particularly sensitive in detecting cardiac arrhythmias in the alcohol-damaged heart.

[Effect of a bicycle ergometer load on the state of the sympathetic-adrenal system and hemodynamic indices in highly trained athletes].

The effect of the bicycle-ergometry load on the condition of the sympatheticoadrenal system, the values of cardio- and hemodynamics, and some biochemical indices of metabolism was studied in 36 athletes. Study of the activity of the sympatheticoadrenal system in a complex with the functional and biochemical values during bicyle-ergometry load made it possible to appraise the condition of the adaptive reactions of the athlete's organism during muscular activity and to diagnose in time and prevent a state of physical overstrain.

Evaluating the comparative efficacy of leg cycle ergometry exercise versus conventional physiotherapy on scar healing, muscle strength, functional capacity, and quality of life in coronary artery bypass graft subjects with saphenous vein graft in phase 1: a protocol for randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) is a common surgical treatment for coronary artery disease. The saphenous vein's advantageous anatomical features make it a popular choice for graft vessels. However, saphenous vein harvesting often results in lower limb complications such as edema, poor scar healing, pain, and reduced functional mobility. These issues can delay recovery and diminish quality of life. Early rehabilitation using leg cycle ergometry may improve outcomes, but comparative evidence with conventional physiotherapy in Phase I post-CABG care is limited. AIM: To determ
