Distribution of breast lesions diagnosed by cytology examination in symptomatic patients at Eritrean National Health Laboratory, Asmara, Eritrea: a retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Fine needle aspiration cytology is a simple, relatively accurate, non-invasive, and cost-effective method of diagnosing most breast pathologies. To date, there is no sufficient data depicting the distribution of breast lesions detected by fine needle aspiration cytology in our healthcare setting. The aim of this study was to elucidate the general distribution of breast lesions diagnosed by cytology test at Eritrean National Health Laboratory. METHODS: This retrospective study was carried out on 905 symptomatic patients between the years 2013 and 2017 at Eritrean National Health La

Determinants of therapy failure among adults on first-line antiretroviral therapy in Asmara, Eritrea: a multicenter retrospective matched case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Information on treatment failure (TF) in People living with HIV in a data-poor setting is necessary to counter the epidemic of TF with first-line combined antiretroviral therapies (cART) in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). In this study, we examined the risk factors associated with TF in Asmara, Eritrea from 2001 to 2020. METHODS: A multicenter, retrospective 1:2 matched (by age and gender) case-control study was conducted in four major hospitals in Asmara, Eritrea on adults aged ≥ 18 years who were on treatment for at least 6 months. Prevalence, aetiology and host and management factors associated with bovine mastitis in dairy cows in Zoba Anseba, Eritrea: a cross-sectional study.

From 47 dairy farms located in the Anseba Region of Eritrea, 222 cows were randomly selected for a questionnaire survey, examined for signs of clinical mastitis and milk samples tested for subclinical mastitis using the California mastitis test (CMT). Twenty cows (9%) were deemed to have clinical mastitis (CM), because they had visible clinical signs or visible changes in milk samples. Of the 202 cows tested by the CMT, 156 (77.23%) had a score of 1 or above at least in one quarter and were deemed to have subclinical mastitis (SCM). SCM was significantly more frequent in exotic breeds than in

Prevalence and factors associated with pediatric HIV therapy failure in a tertiary hospital in Asmara, Eritrea: A 15-year retrospective cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: Treatment failure (TF) in HIV infected children is a major concern in resource-constrained settings in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). This study investigated the prevalence, incidence, and factors associated with first-line cART failure using the virologic (plasma viral load), immunologic and clinical criteria among HIV-infected children. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study of children (<18 years of age on treatment for a period of > 6 months) enrolled in the pediatric HIV/AIDs treatment program at Orotta National Pediatric Referral Hospital from January 2005 to December 2020 was c

Real-world experience with nucleos(t)ide analogue therapy and patient survival rates in chronic viral hepatitis B treatment centers in Eritrea.

Real-world data on treatment outcomes or the quality of large-scale chronic hepatitis B (CHB) treatment programs in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) is extremely difficult to obtain. In this study, we aimed to provide data on the prevalence and incidence of mortality, loss to follow-up (LFTU), and their associated factors in patients with CHB in three treatment centres in Eritrea. Additional information includes baseline clinical profiles of CHB patients initiated on nucleos(t)ide analogue (NUCs) along with a comparison of treatment with Tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF) vs. TDF + Lamuvudine (LAM) u

The effect of intravenous dexamethasone in supraclavicular brachial plexus block at Halibet National Referral Hospital, Eritrea 2024-2025: A randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative pain has significant impact on recovery and healthcare costs. While effective regional anesthesia provides both anesthesia and analgesia, its effects are often of limited duration. Previous studies indicate that intravenous dexamethasone may enhance and prolong analgesia when used with regional blocks, yet reports on its duration to supraclavicular brachial plexus block (SCBPB) for upper limb surgeries are limited. We hypothesized that intravenous dexamethasone would extend postoperative analgesia following SCBPB. METHOD: A randomized clinical trial was conducted at

Case report: Successful treatment of cutaneous leishmaniasis caused by Leishmania aethiopica with liposomal amphothericin B in an immunocompromised traveler returning from Eritrea.

Cutaneous leishmaniasis caused by Leishmania aethiopica is rarely encountered outside disease-endemic areas and there have been no clinical trials evaluating its pharmacotherapy. We describe the treatment of cutaneous leishmaniasis caused by L. aethiopica using liposomal amphothericin B in an immunocompromised traveler returning from Eritrea.

Epidemiology of mutant Plasmodium falciparum parasites lacking histidine-rich protein 2/3 genes in Eritrea 2 years after switching from HRP2-based RDTs.

Eritrea was the first African country to complete a nationwide switch in 2016 away from HRP2-based RDTs due to high rates of false-negative RDT results caused by Plasmodium falciparum parasites lacking hrp2/hrp3 genes. A cross-sectional survey was conducted during 2019 enrolling symptomatic malaria patients from nine health facilities across three zones consecutively to investigate the epidemiology of P. falciparum lacking hrp2/3 after the RDT switch. Molecular analyses of 715 samples revealed the overall prevalence of hrp2-, hrp3-, and dual hrp2/3-deleted parasites as 9.4% (95%CI 7.4-11.7%),

However, adherence to recommended guidelines for managing childhood diarrhea is often suboptimal worldwide. This study aimed to assess the overall appropriateness of diarrhea management and its associated factors in children under five, with or without co-morbid illnesses. METHODS: Hospital-based cross-sectional study was conducted. Data

Status of polio eradication in the seven countries of the Eastern Africa Epidemiological Block.

The progress that Burundi, Eritrea, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia, the seven countries of the Eastern Africa Epidemiological Block (EAEB), have made toward polio eradication is summarized. Despite low per capita gross national product, poor infrastructure (especially for communication and transportation), and civil unrest, the EAEB has made significant progress toward polio eradication. Five of the seven countries have achieved high levels of routine coverage with at least three doses of oral polio vaccine. Virologic surveillance is established in Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, and Ke
