Parvovirus B19 infection and autoimmune disease.

Human parvovirus B19 infections may cause a widespread benign and self-limiting disease in children and adults, known as erythema infectiosum or fifth disease. A variety of further manifestations are associated with the infection such as arthralgias, arthritis, leukopenia and thrombocytopenia, anemia and vasculitis, spontaneous abortion and hydrops fetalis in pregnant women. Both in children and adults parvovirus B19 infections have been frequently implicated as a cause or trigger of various forms of autoimmune diseases affecting joints, connective tissue and large and small vessels. Parvovirus B19 in human disease.

Parvovirus B19, the only known human pathogenic parvovirus, is associated with a wide range of disease manifestations. In healthy individuals, the major presentation of B19 infection is erythema infectiosum. In patients with underlying hemolytic disorders, infection is the primary cause of transient aplastic crisis. In immunosuppressed patients, persistent infection may develop that presents as pure red cell aplasia and chronic anemia. In utero infection may result in hydrops fetalis or congenital anemia. Diagnosis is based on examination of bone marrow and virologic studies. Much is known of

Parvovirus B19 infection as a cause of acute myositis in an adult.

Parvovirus B19 infection is often asymptomatic, but clinical expressions may include transient aplastic crisis, erythema infectiosum, non-immune hydrops fetalis, and chronic red cell aplasia. This virus has also been associated with rheumatoid arthritis and other autoimmune connective tissue diseases; however, we could not identify any acute adult myositis case developed after a Parvovirus B19 infection in the literature. For this reason, we would like to present a rare case of acute myositis developed after Parvovirus B19 infection. In patients presenting with symptoms of fever, rash on the l

Viral Skin Diseases.

In the vast world of skin diseases, viral skin disorders account for a significant percentage. Most viral skin diseases present with an exanthem (skin rash) and, oftentimes, an accompanying enanthem (lesions involving the mucosal membrane). In this article, the various viral skin diseases are explored, including viral childhood exanthems (measles, rubella, erythema infectiosum, and roseola), herpes viruses (herpes simplex virus, varicella zoster virus, Kaposi sarcoma herpes virus, viral zoonotic infections [orf, monkeypox, ebola, smallpox]), and several other viral skin diseases, such as human

Rhabdomyolysis associated with human parvovirus B19 infection in a patient with Fukuyama-type congenital muscular dystrophy.

Patients with Fukuyama-type congenital muscular dystrophy sometimes experience transient exacerbations of muscle weakness. We took care of a 9-year-old boy with Fukuyama-type congenital muscular dystrophy who presented with acute respiratory failure and decreased exercise ability with marked elevation of serum creatine kinase indicating rhabdomyolysis. At that time, his younger sister suffered from erythema infectiosum. Although he had no particular symptoms, he was tested and proven to have acute human parvovirus B19 infection based on detection of anti-B19 IgM and parvovirus B19 DNA in his s

Seizure and hepatosplenomegaly-rare manifestation of parvovirus B-19: a case report and review of the literature.

Parvovirus B19 is the etiologic agent of erythema infectiosum (fifth disease), a fever-rash illness occurring in childhood. We present a 10 month old child with high grade fever for 10 days, generalized tonic-clonic seizure, bilateral cervical lymphadenopathy, generalized maculopapular rash, hematemesis and malena. Bone marrow aspiration and liver biopsy were done. EBV serology and parvovirus PCR were also performed. Bone marrow aspiration and biopsy showed giant pro-erythroblast consistent with parvovirus infection. PCR showed amplification of parvovirus genomic sequences. Present case highli

Clinical aspects of parvovirus B19 infection.

Parvovirus B19 is a significant human pathogen that causes a wide spectrum of clinical complications ranging from mild, self-limiting erythema infectiosum in immunocompetent children to lethal cytopenias in immunocompromised patients and intrauterine foetal death in primary infected pregnant women. The infection may also be persistent and can mimic or trigger autoimmune inflammatory disorders. Another important clinical aspect to consider is the risk of infection through B19-contaminated blood products. Recent advances in diagnosis and pathogenesis, new insights in the cellular immune response

[Responsiveness of a new parvovirus B19 antigen produced in baculovirus expression system to B19-specific IgG and IgM antibodies in every epidemic, 1968, 1980, 1987 and 1992 in Japan].

A new recombinant parvovirus B19 antigen was tested whether it was responsive to human serum antibodies in every epidemic year of erythema infectiosum for 25 years, because wild strains of B19 parvovirus were changeable genetically. The antigen was empty particles of both B19-VP1 and VP2 produced in baculovirus expression system. Specimens were 21 sera in 1968, 19 in 1980, 44 in 1987 and 33 in 1992, derived from 67 patients with erythema infectiosum, fever and/or non-specific exanthem and aplastic crisis in persons with hereditary spherocytosis. Each patient had been confirmed of B19 parvoviru

Naturally occurring T lymphocytotoxic antibody in viral and related skin diseases.

The naturally occurring T lymphocytotoxic antibodies in patients with viral and related skin diseases were investigated and compared with those of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). The incidences of T lymphocytotoxic antibodies in exanthema suspected of viral infection, infectious mononucleosis, rubella and pityriasis rosea were 28%, 44%, 8% and 28% respectively. Sera from patients with herpes zoster and erythema infectiosum did not show positivity. Incidence in SLE sera as positive control was 82%. The T lymphocytotoxic antibodies detected in skin diseases were similar in nature to those of

The rash with mucosal ulceration.

A rash is a disseminated eruption of cutaneous lesions with great variation in appearance, cause, and severity. When the physician is facing a rash, the history and physical examination of the patient are extremely important for the identification of the disease and its causal agent. There are various causes for a rash, which may be infectious, allergic, or rheumatologic, besides many others. Rashes associated with mucosal ulcers may have causes related to viral and bacterial infections or drug reactions. They may be associated with measles; erythema infectiosum; roseola infantum; rubella; han

Parvovirus B19 is a common source of infection with a seroprevalence of 60-70 per cent in the adult population. The most common manifestation is erythema infectiosum ("fifth disease"), with exanthem, fever and upper airway symptoms in children. The infection can give rise to a multifaceted clinical picture and is probably underdiagnosed, particularly in risk groups (individuals with haemolytic anaemia or immunosuppression, and fetuses). Serological diagnosis can now be complemented with the demonstration of viral DNA using the PCR (polymerase chain reaction) test in various body fluids, or tis

[Viral exanthematic childhood diseases].

Exanthem is defined as multiple, inflammatory skin alteration with a hematogenic, lymphogenic or neurogenic origin. Typically, so called exanthematic children's diseases are measles, mumps, rubella, varicella, erythema infectiosum (fifth disease) and in the past small pox. The pathogenesis of the viral-caused diseases primarily occurs in the vascular connective tissue. The cytopathogenetic effects result in inflammatory tissue reactions with activation of defence mechanism and producing of immune complexes. First symptoms are hyperemia, edema and inflammatory infiltrates with itchy swellings.

Papular-purpuric "gloves and socks" syndrome.

Papular-purpuric "gloves and socks" syndrome (PPGSS), is an acute dermatosis characterized by a papular-purpuric edematous rash in a distinct ''gloves and socks'' distribution often accompanied by fever, asthenia and lymphadenophaties. It is mainly caused by parvovirus B19 (B19V) but other viruses and drugs such as trimethoprim/sulfametaxol or chemotherapics may be involved. We describe a case of PPGSS with a serologically proven B19V infection in a 42-year-old Italian kindergarten teacher suffering from acute bacterial pharyngitis Immunoglobulin M by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA)

[Subacute thyroiditis in Parvovirus B19 infection].

In a 32-year-old women with clinical and scintigraphic signs of thyroiditis, serological screening showed positive IgG and IgM titres against Parvovirus B19 (PB19). Subacute thyroiditis has not previously been reported following PB19 infection. The present case suggests that subacute thyroiditis may be caused by PB19 infection. Further screening is necessary to establish whether this infection is more frequently associated with subacute thyroiditis than previously thought.

[Human Parvovirus B19 : from benign infections to rare systemic complication].

Human Parvovirus B19 is a single-stranded DNA virus responsible for generally mild and self-limiting infections. In children, it causes erythema infectiosum (fifth disease), while in adults it often presents as symmetrical peripheral polyarthritis. Transmission occurs primarily via respiratory droplets, especially in settings with close contact, leading to recurrent seasonal outbreaks. PVB19 can cause hematologic complications in individuals with underlying blood disorders. Rare but serious complications may affect the cardiac, hepatic, renal, and neurological systems, as well as lead to hydro

Characterization and molecular cloning of a human parvovirus genome.

The genome of the small human virus serologically associated with erythrocyte aplasia and erythema infectiosum (fifth disease) is shown to be a linear, nonpermuted, single-stranded DNA molecule with self-priming hairpin termini, properties which are characteristic of the genomes of the family Parvoviridae. This human parvovirus chromosome was molecularly cloned into bacterial plasmid vectors and the cloned DNA was used to explore its relatedness to other mammalian parvovirus serotypes by DNA:DNA hybridization. It is not related to the human adeno-associated viruses but does show a distant evol
