[A case with Bartter's syndrome associated with type II hyperlipidemia, increased fluidity of plasma VLDL and abnormal configuration of peripheral erythrocytes (author's transl)].

A 34-year-old female complaining of numbness and weakness of the extremities was examined. Consanguineous marriage was contracted between mother and father. She was of short stature (149 cm), and her blood pressure was normal (118/60 mmHg). Her serum potassium concentration had decreased to a level between 2.5 and 3.2 mEq/L, and hypokalemic alkalosis was present. Potassium clearance had increased and urinary concentrating capacity was impaired. Plasma renin activity was high at 25 ng/ml/hr but plasma aldosterone concentration was normal. Hypertensive response to angiotensin II (50 ng/kg/min) w

Exposure of Physalaemus cuvieri (Anura) to benzo[a]pyrene and α-naphthoflavone: Morphofunctional effects on hepatic melanomacrophages and erythrocytes abnormalities.

Benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) is a high-risk contaminant of elevated toxicity. Its biotransformation process occurs as the expression of CYP1A1 increases and produces toxic metabolites. In turn, α-naphthoflavone (aNF) represents an inhibitor of CYP1A1, preventing BaP metabolism. Toxicological studies in anurans show alterations in the melanomacrophage (MM) detoxification cell after exposure to xenobiotics. In this study, the production of melanin by MMs was evaluated, as were morphological alterations in the cytoskeleton, phagocytosis and the genotoxicity effects after exposure of an anuran species to

Neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio, nucleated red blood cells and erythrocyte abnormalities in canine systemic inflammatory response syndrome.

Systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) is the manifestation of the systemic response to an infectious or non-infectious disease. We evaluated the association between erythrocyte parameters, including nucleated red blood cells (NRBCs) and leukocyte ratios (NLR, neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio; BLR, band neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio; BLNR, band neutrophil-to-neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio). A review of the medical records was conducted searching SIRS dogs among those admitted to our intensive care unit and a SIRS grading was obtained based on how many criteria were fulfilled. The Acute

Decreased erythrocyte nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide redox potential and abnormal pyridine nucleotide content in sickle cell disease.

RBCs from individuals with sickle cell disease are more susceptible to oxidant damage. Because key antioxidant defense reactions are linked to the pyridine nucleotides nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADP), we tested the hypothesis that the RBC redox potential as manifested by the NADH/[NAD+ + NADH] and NADPH/[NADP+ + NADPH] ratios is decreased in sickle erythrocytes. Our data demonstrate that sickle RBCs have a significant decrease in the NADH/[NAD+ + NADH] ratio compared with normal RBCs (P less than .00005). Interestingly, sickle RBCs

Behavioral, Hematological, Biochemical, Antioxidant, Histopathological and Micronuclear Abnormality in the Erythrocytes of Ctenopharyngodon idella Exposed to Chromium Chloride Toxicity.

Chromium is characterized by toxicity to living organisms due to their ability to accumulate in biological tissues and disrupt normal physiological functions. The current study assessed the effect of chromium on the serum biochemistry, hematology, antioxidant enzyme system, and histopathology of the selected freshwater fish (Ctenopharyngodon Idella). For this purpose, Ctenopharyngodon Idella, weighing ∼60-80 g, were divided into four groups at random and subsequently subjected to chromium exposure i.e. control, 0.44 mg L⁻¹, 0.89 mg L⁻¹ and 1.34 mg L⁻¹ from LC50 (74.35 mgL- 1) for 21 days and d

Hypoxia reduced upper thermal limits causing cellular and nuclear abnormalities of erythrocytes in Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus.

Global warming is a threat across the world that leads to estimates of the upper thermal limits of ectothermic species. Increased water temperature up-regulates oxygen consumption and metabolic rates, and alters the physiological processes. In this study, we identified the critical thermal maxima (CTmax) and physiological responses under normoxia and hypoxia in Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus. CTmax was 41.25 °C under hypoxia and 44.50 °C under normoxia. Compared to normoxia, lower values of hemoglobin (Hb) and red blood cells (RBCs) were observed at the CTmax under hypoxia. In contrast, h

Thermal stress causes nuclear and cellular abnormalities of peripheral erythrocytes in Indian major carp, rohu Labeo rohita.

Rise of water temperature as a consequence of global warming is anticipated to affect the physiological activities of fish, especially in tropical regions. In the present experiment, we exposed the Indian major carp, rohu Labeo rohita to three different temperature regimes (30 °C as control and 33 °C and 36 °C) for 60 days and observed the effects of these temperature on: major hemato-biochemical indices (Hemoglobin; Hb, Red blood cell; RBC, White blood cell; WBC and blood glucose levels), erythrocytic nuclear abnormalities (ENA), and erythrocytic cellular abnormalities (ECA) of peripheral ery

Erythrocyte sedimentation rate and C-reactive protein discrepancy and high prevalence of coronary artery abnormalities in Kawasaki disease.

BACKGROUND: An outbreak of Kawasaki disease (KD) in Colorado between November, 1997, and June, 1998, provided the opportunity to study inflammatory indices and coronary artery abnormalities. METHODS: Medical records of the 33 patients diagnosed with KD at The Children's Hospital during the outbreak were reviewed. Demographic and clinical information, C-reactive protein (CRP), erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) and echocardiogram results were recorded. Traditional abnormalities (dilatation, aneurysm, ectasia), as well as "prominence" of the coronary arteries were noted. RESULTS: Twenty-five

Lipid abnormalities in hereditary neuropathy. Part 3. Plasma and erythrocyte lipids of HMSN-III (Dejerine-Sottas disease).

Plasma glucosylceramide levels of 5 patients with Hereditary Motor and Sensory Neuropathy Type III (Dejerine-Sottas disease) were approximately 50% higher than in controls. Erythrocyte glucosylceramides, however, were within the range of normal values. Elevated plasma glucosylceramide levels provide further evidence that an abnormality of lipid metabolism may underlie this recessively inherited hypertrophic neuropathy. No abnormality was observed among other glycosphingolipid fractions. An altered sphingomyelin fatty acid composition and reduced phosphatidylcholine level was also found, but th

Histopathological changes and erythrocytic nuclear abnormalities in Iberian green frogs (Rana perezi Seoane) from a uranium mine pond.

In spite of their sensitivity to anthropogenic stressors, adults of Rana perezi Seoane were found inhabiting effluent ponds from a uranium mine. Due to the presence of such organisms in this environment, it becomes of paramount importance to assess the damages induced by local contamination on these aquatic vertebrates, in order to integrate this information on a site-specific risk assessment that is being carried out in the area. To attain this purpose an ethically and statistically acceptable number of green frogs were captured in the mine pond (M) and in a pristine river (VR), a few kilomet

High expression of human beta S- and alpha-globins in transgenic mice: erythrocyte abnormalities, organ damage, and the effect of hypoxia.

A line of transgenic mice with two cointegrated transgenes, the human beta S- and alpha 2-globin genes, linked to the beta-globin locus control region was produced and bred with mice carrying a deletion of the mouse beta major-globin gene. In transgenic mice homozygous for the beta major deletion (alpha H beta S[beta MDD]; where alpha H is human alpha-globin and MD is mouse deletion), 72.5 +/- 2.4% (mean +/- SD) of the beta-chains are beta S and the ratio of alpha H- to beta S-globin was 0.73. Tannery effluent-induced toxicity in giant amazon river turtle (Podocnemis expansa) juveniles: behavioral responses and erythrocyte nuclear abnormalities.

Exposure to tannery effluents poses a significant threat to aquatic biodiversity, particularly in tropical ecosystems, where data on ecotoxicological impacts on aquatic reptiles remains scarce. This study investigated the effects of such exposure on juvenile Podocnemis expansa over a 21-day period, addressing a critical gap in understanding these impacts on chelonians. The effluent, collected from a "wet-blue" tannery and rich in heavy metals (Cr, Zn, Mg, Ca), was tested at three environmentally relevant dilutions: TE1.4 (1.4%), TE3.1 (3.1%), and TE6.5 (6.5%), along with negative (C) and posit

Canine malignant hyperthermia susceptibility: erythrocytic defects--osmotic fragility, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency and abnormal Ca2+ homeostasis.

Two dogs were diagnosed as malignant hyperthermia susceptible based on increased susceptibility (P less than 0.001) of biopsied muscle to caffeine-induced contracture. Erythrocytes from malignant hyperthermia and normal dogs were then examined for an antioxidant system deficiency. Values for serum muscle enzymes, reticulocytes and corpuscular hemoglobin were mildly elevated. Osmotic fragility was increased: hemolysis occurred at a NaCl concentration 10 mM higher than for normal dogs (P less than 0.001). A 35% glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency (P less than 0.001) with a 40% compensat

Mixture effects of arsenic and chromium on erythrocytic nuclear abnormalities and expression of DNA repair, tumor suppressor and apoptotic genes in liver of zebrafish.

The present study investigated the individual and mixture effects of Arsenic (As) and Chromium (Cr) at their environmental concentrations in zebrafish (Danio rerio). After 15, 30 and 60 days of exposure, increased frequencies of erythrocytic nuclear abnormalities (ENAs) were noticed. After 60 days of exposure, DNA damage was observed in liver and base excision DNA repair (BER) and mismatch DNA repair (MMR) pathways were studied to know the cellular responses. Altered expression of BER (ogg1, apex1, creb1, polb) and MMR (mlh1, msh2, msh6) genes indicated inhibition of DNA repair. Downregulation

Erythrocytic nuclear abnormalities and apoptotic gene dysregulation in zebrafish organs: Individual and combined genotoxic effects after lead and chromium exposure.

Lead (Pb) and chromium (Cr) are among the most extensively studied heavy metals due to their widespread presence and hazardous impacts on aquatic life. Pb and Cr exhibit strong genotoxic potential in aquatic environments by inducing DNA damage through overproduction of reactive oxygen species, resulting in oxidative stress, DNA strand breaks, and chromosomal aberrations. Disruption of nuclear integrity, impaired DNA repair pathways, and apoptosis activation further exacerbate their toxicity. However, most studies focus on their individual effects, often overlooking their combined genotoxic eff

Study of electrocardiographic corrected QT interval and QT dispersion abnormalities, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, serum uric acid in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus.

INTRODUCTION: Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disease having a variety of clinical symptoms because of multiple organs being affected at once or progressively over time. Cardiovascular system (CVS) involvement is the third most frequent cause of death in SLE, among other factors. The prognosis can be determined by looking at QT interval measurements, which have shown an elevated risk of mortality from cardiovascular causes. METHODS: A case-control study was conducted on 80 patients (40 SLE patients and 40 controls) for a duration of 16 months. SLE patients and controls wer
