Separation of Channels Subserving Approach and Avoidance/Escape at the Level of the Basal Ganglia and Related Brainstem Structures.

The basal ganglia have the key function of directing our behavior in the context of events from our environment and/or our internal state. This function relies on afferents targeting the main input structures of the basal ganglia, entering bids for action selection at the level of the striatum or signals for behavioral interruption at the level of the subthalamic nucleus, with behavioral reselection facilitated by dopamine signaling. Numerous experiments have studied action selection in relation to inputs from the cerebral cortex. However, less is known about the anatomical and functional link

Long-term UVB exposure promotes predator-inspection behaviour in a fish.

Ultraviolet-B radiation (UVB) reaching the earth's surface has increased due to human-caused stratospheric ozone depletion. Whereas the harmful effects of UVB on aquatic organisms are well studied at the molecular and cellular level, recent studies have also begun to address behavioural changes caused by sublethal amounts of UVB. However, the behavioural consequences of long-term exposure to ecologically relevant UVB levels over several life stages are virtually unknown, particularly with regard to predator-prey behaviour. We found increased predator-inspection behaviour together with a smalle

Is naïveté forever? Alien predator and aggressor recognition by two endemic island reptiles.

The disproportionate impacts of invasive predators are often attributed to the naïveté (i.e., inefficient or non-existing anti-predator behavior) of island native species having evolved without such predators. Naïveté has long been regarded as a fixed characteristic, but a few recent studies indicate a capacity for behavioral adaptation in native species in contact with alien predators. Here, we tested whether two reptiles endemic to New Caledonia, a skink, Caledoniscincus austrocaledonicus, and a gecko, Bavayia septuiclavis, recognized and responded to the odor of six introduced species (two

The critical role of intracellular calcium in the mechanisms of plasticity of common snail defensive behavior command neurons LPl1 and RPl1 in nociceptive sensitization.

Studies on semi-intact common snail preparations addressed the involvement of intracellular calcium in changes in the excitability and responses to sensory stimuli of defensive behavior command neurons LPl1 and RPl1 during the acquisition of nociceptive sensitization. Application of sensitizing stimuli to the heads of control snails led to depolarization of neuron membranes, increases in neuron excitability, and depression of the responses of neurons to sensory stimuli during the short-term stage, and marked facilitation of responses in the long-term stage of sensitization. Acquisition of sens

The dynamics and scaling of force production during the tail-flip escape response of the California spiny lobster Panulirus interruptus.

The tail-flip escape behavior is a stereotypical motor pattern of decapod crustaceans in which swift adduction of the tail to the thorax causes the animal to rotate, move vertically into the water column and accelerate rapidly backwards. Previous predictions that a strong jet force is produced during the flip as the tail adducts to the body are not supported by our simultaneous measurements of force production (using a transducer) and the kinematics (using high-speed video) of tail-flipping by the California spiny lobster Panulirus interruptus. Maximum force production occurred when the tail w

Organization of escape movements from overhead threats in the Mongolian gerbil (Meriones unguiculatus).

Mongolian gerbils (Meriones unguiculatus) were presented with overhead visual stimuli in different environmental situations. The organization of escape movements was investigated with video-based image analysis methods. In Experiment 1, gerbils in an open field established a home base and organized their escape trajectories with reference to both the home base and the location of the stimulus. In Experiment 2, gerbils were provided pairs of refuges. They used these refuges as home bases and organized their responses with reference to the home base. In Experiment 3, pairs of gerbils were tested

Hyperglycemia and fight-flight behavior in nondiabetic and diabetic mice.

Glycemic responses to a resident-intruder encounter and to the drawing of blood from the retro-orbital sinus were studied in diabetic and normal male Swiss Webster mice. The diabetes induced with streptozotocin was either borderline, overt, or severe. The resident-intruder encounter consisted of a brief exposure to another male mouse trained to be aggressive. The blood collected was not sufficient (3% blood volume) to cause significant volume depletion. Behavior during the resident-intruder encounter was videotaped and later quantified. Borderline diabetic, overtly diabetic and nondiabetic mic

Density and group size effects on caged hens of two genetic stocks differing in escape and avoidance behavior.

Hens of two moderately inbred White Leghorn stocks, known to differ significantly in escape and avoidance behavior, were compared for productivity traits, nervousness, and feather loss when housed four or eight per cage at densities of 348 (high), 464 (medium), and 580 (low) cm2/bird. Differences were found between stocks in sexual maturity, egg production traits, body weights, nervousness, and feather loss. The more nervous strain lost more feathers. Highest density housing depressed performance and increased nervousness and feather loss, but differences were generally lacking between the med

Localization and electrical activity of the distance chemoreceptors that mediate predator avoidance behaviour in Acmaea limatula and Acmaea scutum (gastropoda, prosobranchia).

1. The marine gastropods Acmaea (Collisella) limatula and Acmaea (Notoacmea) scutum respond to distant predatory starfish (i.e. to starfish scent) by moving up a vertical surface. 2. The distance chemoreceptors that mediate this avoidance behaviour are located on the mantle margin. Heat cauterization of the limpets' mantle margin eliminates their responsiveness to Pisaster ochraceus scent, while a similar cauterization of the ctenidium and the osphradia does not diminish the avoidance behaviour. 3. Primary afferent electrical activity can be recorded from the chemoreceptors on the mantle margi

Habitat-specific sensory-exploitative signals in birds: propensity of dipteran prey to cause evolution of plumage variation in flush-pursuit insectivores.

Sensory exploitation occurs when signals trigger behavioral reactions that diminish the receiver's fitness. Research in this area focuses on the match between the signal's form and the receiver's sensitivity, but the effect of habitat on interspecific sensory exploitation is rarely addressed. Myioborus redstarts use conspicuous wing and tail displays of contrasting black-and-white plumage patches to flush dipteran insects, which are then pursued and captured in flight. Previous studies have shown that by increasing the distance at which insects perform an escape response, conspicuous visual di

When less is more: harnessing optimal quencher concentrations to maximize quantum yields in TADF photoredox reactions.

Here, we report a counterintuitive "less is more" effect, in which lower quencher concentrations improve overall quantum yields in photoinduced electron transfer - key reaction steps in organic photoredox catalysis. This behavior arises because lower quencher concentrations favor quenching of the triplet rather than the singlet excited state. In the latter undesired case, lower efficiencies for free radical or radical ion formation following electron transfer are generally expected, due to reduced cage escape (i.e., separation of geminate radical pairs before recombination). This less producti

Effects of medial amygdala inactivation on a panic-related behavior.

In the last years, the role played by the medial nucleus of the amygdala (MeA) in the modulation of fear- and anxiety-related behaviors has been increasingly investigated. This nucleus plays an important role in the processing of predator odor-induced defensive reactions, i.e. freezing and risk-assessment behaviors. Immunohistochemical evidence also indicates that the MeA may be involved in the regulation of escape, a defensive behavior related to panic attacks. In this study, we further addressed this question by investigating the effects of the reversible inactivation of the nucleus on escap

HIV-1 viral escape in cerebrospinal fluid of subjects on suppressive antiretroviral treatment.

BACKGROUND: Occasional cases of viral escape in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) despite suppression of plasma human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) RNA have been reported. We investigated CSF viral escape in subjects treated with commonly used antiretroviral therapy regimens in relation to intrathecal immune activation and central nervous system penetration effectiveness (CPE) rank. METHODS: Sixty-nine neurologically asymptomatic subjects treated with antiretroviral therapy >6 months and plasma HIV-1 RNA <50 copies/mL were cross-sectionally included in the analysis. Antiretroviral therapy reg

[Cutaneous changes induced by a dose of DEC in rodents with skin microfilaria: relevance of these phenomena for understanding the Mazzotti reaction and the pathogenesis of human onchocerciasis].

A single dose of DEC was given to Lemniscomys striatus parasitized by Monanema martini. The histopathological analysis of ear-lobe skin sections shows: a massive escape of microfilariae from the lymph capillaries, a major vascular exudative reaction with edema and diapedesis of blood cells. This inflammatory process leads to the destruction of the extralymphatic microfilariae and it induces a subacute and chronic dermatitis at the 7th day. These findings explain the pathogenesis of Mazzotti reaction during treatment of human onchocerciasis. The use of DEC produces precisely the factor that is

Renal transplantation from hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg)-positive donors to HBsAg-negative recipients: a case of post-transplant fulminant hepatitis associated with an extensively mutated hepatitis B virus strain and review of the current literature.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to present a fatal case of fulminant hepatitis B (FHB) that developed in a renal transplant recipient, immunized against hepatitis B, 1 year post transplantation. METHODS: Polymerase chain reaction amplification and full genome sequencing were performed to investigate whether specific mutations were associated with hepatitis B virus (HBV) transmission and FHB. RESULTS: Molecular analysis revealed multiple mutations in various open reading frames of HBV, the most important being the G145R escape mutation and a frameshift mutation-insertion (1838insA) wit

The blockage of ventromedial hypothalamus CRF type 2 receptors impairs escape responses in the elevated T-maze.

In a previous study, the administration of corticotrophin-releasing factor (CRF) into the dorsomedial hypothalamus (DMH), a region that modulates defensive reactions, was shown to facilitate elevated T-maze (ETM) avoidance responses, an anxiogenic-like effect. Intra-DMH administration of the CRF type 1 receptor (CRFR1) antagonist antalarmin induced anxiolytic-like effects and counteracted the anxiogenic effects of CRF. The present study further investigates the role played by CRF receptors of the medial hypothalamus in anxiety. For that, male wistar rats were treated with CRFR1 and CRFR2-modul

Defensive responses to predator threat in the rat and mouse.

Defensive responses include an array of specific behaviors, including flight, freezing, risk assessment, and defensive threat/attack, that are elicited by unconditioned threat stimuli such as predators or predator odors. Some individual defensive behaviors are selectively responsive to drugs effective against generalized anxiety disorder or panic, providing a rationale for their use in investigation of compounds that may be useful in treating these disorders. In addition, defensive behaviors toward predators and some predator odors show rapid conditioning to contextual stimuli, whereas other p

Surprising multifunctionality of a Tritonia swim CPG neuron: C2 drives the early phase of postswim crawling despite being silent during the behavior.

In response to a suitably aversive skin stimulus, the marine mollusk Tritonia diomedea launches an escape swim followed by several minutes of high-speed crawling. The two escape behaviors are highly dissimilar: whereas the swim is a muscular behavior involving alternating ventral and dorsal whole body flexions, the crawl is a nonrhythmic gliding behavior mediated by the beating of foot cilia. The serotonergic dorsal swim interneurons (DSIs) are members of the swim central pattern generator (CPG) and also strongly drive crawling. Although the swim network is very well understood, the Tritonia c

College students' attitudes toward finding a mate to escape depression: sex differences.

College student respondents (n = 128) were compared on their consideration of finding a mate or significant other as a strategy for a hypothetical teacher ("Terry") displaying symptoms of dysthymic disorder (DSM-IV criteria). The sex of "Terry" was manipulated by descriptive pronoun (he or she) only. Analysis indicated differences based on sex of Terry and sex of respondent. Respondents favored finding a mate for the hypothetical male more than the female. Men, more than women, supported finding a mate or significant other for the teacher.
