BACKGROUND: There are numerous procedures in which, beyond adequate manipulation of the temporalis muscle and cranial closure, patients may present bone and muscle defects due to atrophy and consequent facial asymmetry, causing psychological discomfort and functional deterioration. The extraction of a tooth in the anterior region can result in resorption of alveolar bone around the socket, especially the buccal bone leading to horizontal as well as vertical bone loss. This makes rehabilitation in the anterior region an esthetically complex situation. To preserve the buccal bone, the root is bisected and buccal two-thirds is preserved in the socket. This is called socket shield technique. Immediate implant placement and immediate provisionalization yield an esthetically pleasing and more acceptable outcome.

OBJECTIVE: When pigmentations appeared in the esthetic zone and were visible during the patient's smile, they were very disconcerting. There are multiple techniques to eradicate or ameliorate these discolorations. This article will address those pigmentations caused by amalgam particles.
CLINICAL CONSIDERATIONS: Keratinized gingival grafts were used to cover and mask these pigmentations. In addition, connective tissue grafts were used to aid in the elimination of the external pigmentation.
CONCLUSIONS: Both techniques were shown to be very effective in masking or eliminating these unesthetic

UNLABELLED: The aim of this study was to determine which smile asymmetries were less esthetic, dental or gingival.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the existence of different esthetic smile criteria as determined on the smiles of celebrities, which were considered by lay people to be beautiful.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: An Internet search for "best smile" and "female celebrities" in the years 2007 and 2008 identified 50 celebrities who were voted to have beautiful smiles. Another search was made for images of these celebrities that showed the entire face with an open smile. Periodontal surgical procedures consisting of gingival flaps and osseous recontouring are indicated for crown lengthening of several contiguous teeth in the esthetic zone; both in cases where restorations are required and in cases where no restorations are planned, such as in patients with excessive gingival display due to altered passive eruption. Forced tooth eruption via orthodontic extrusion is the technique of choice when clinical crown lengthening is necessary on isolated teeth in the esthetic zone.

BACKGROUND: Single-rooted teeth deemed not restorable via conventional means may be candidates for implant placement at the time of tooth extraction. An x-ray cephalographic method was used to analyze 52 exceptionally well-balanced white adult faces for skeletal asymmetry in the posteroanterior (PA) projection. Three frontal facial lines were constructed using bilateral skeletal landmarks: latero-superior orbit (LO), lateral zygoma (Zyg), and gonion (Go). All subjects demonstrated measurable asymmetries. Data showed less asymmetry and more dimensional stability as the cranium is approached. A slight tendency toward right-side dominance was not statistically significant.
