Decreases of ethanolamine plasmalogen and phosphatidylcholine in erythrocyte are a common phenomenon in Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and coronary artery diseases.

Decreased plasma levels of plasmalogens in neurodegenerative diseases have been watched with interest. We previously reported the decreases of erythrocyte ethanolamine plasmalogen (PlsPE) of blood not only in Alzheimer's disease (AD) and Parkinson's disease (PD), but also in coronary artery disease (CAD). In the present study, by using the same high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method, we investigated the pattern of changes in the phospholipid composition of erythrocyte membrane in AD, PD and CAD compared with healthy individuals. The common patten of changes among them was as foll

Bronchoscopic ethanolamine injection therapy in patients with persistent air leak from chest tube drainage.

BACKGROUND: Chest tube drainage (CTD) is an indication for the treatment of pneumothorax, hemothroax and is used after a thoracic surgery. But, in the case of incomplete lung expansion, and/or persistent air leak from CTD, medical or surgical thoracoscopy or, if that is unavailable, limited thoracotomy, should be considered. We evaluate the efficacy of bronchoscopic injection of ethanolamine to control the persistent air leak in patients with CTD. METHODS: Patients who had persistent or prolonged air leak from CTD were included, consecutively. We directly injected 1.0 mL solution of 5% ethano

Endoscopic sclerotherapy (ethanolamine oleate injection) for acute rectal varices bleeding in a patient with liver cirrhosis.

Treatment for acute rectal bleeding from rectal varices in a patient with liver cirrhosis is often difficult. Herein, we report an elderly male with cirrhosis who successfully underwent endoscopic sclerotherapy for rectal bleeding from rectal varices. He had a history of esophageal varices, which were treated by endoscopic sclerotherapy. Three years after the treatment of esophageal varices, he developed massive bright red rectal bleeding. Taking into consideration the risk of treating rectal varices by surgery, we decided to try endoscopic sclerotherapy of the rectal varices. In this case, we

PvrA-Mediated Inhibition of Choline and Ethanolamine Uptake Promotes Pseudomonas aeruginosa Colonization in the Host Environment.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa can utilize abundant phosphatidylcholine (PC) and phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) within the host as energy and structural substrates. Fatty acids, choline, and ethanolamine liberated from PC and PE can each serve as the sole carbon source to support bacterial growth in vitro. Our previous work demonstrated that fatty acid metabolism is critical for acute pulmonary infection caused by P. aeruginosa. The pathogen senses host-derived fatty acids via the transcriptional regulator PvrA, which activates fatty acid utilization pathways and drives the production of virulence fact

The surface and micellar properties of ethanolamine based surface active ionic liquids in the presence of drug aspirin.

Bio-based surface-active ionic liquids (SAILs) offer promising advantages for pharmaceutical applications, particularly in enhancing drug solubility and bioavailability. Aspirin, classified under the Biopharmaceutics Classification System (BCS) as poorly soluble in the gastrointestinal tract, require effective solubilization strategies for improved therapeutic efficacy. This study investigates the micellization behavior and thermophysical properties of three natural based SAILs (2-hydroxyethyl)ammonium oleate ([2-HEA][Ole]), bis(2-hydroxyethyl)ammonium oleate ([BHEA][Ole]), and tris(2-hydroxye

Niclosamide ethanolamine induces trachea relaxation and inhibits proliferation and migration of trachea smooth muscle cells.

Our previous study found that the anthelmintic drug niclosamide relaxed the constricted arteries and inhibited proliferation and migration of vascular smooth muscle cells. Here, we investigated the effect of niclosamide ethanolamine (NEN) on trachea function and the proliferation and migration of trachea smooth muscle cells. Isometric tension of trachea was recorded by multi-channel myograph system. The cell proliferation was detected by using BrdU cell proliferation assay. The cell migration ability was evaluated by using scratch assay. The protein level was measured by using western blot tec

Ethanolamine Produced from Oleoylethanolamide Degradation Contributes to Acetylcholine/Dopamine Balance Modulating Eating Behavior.

Oleoylethanolamide is a well-recognized anorectic compound which also has noteworthy effects on food-reward, influencing the acetylcholine (ACh)/dopamine (DA) balance in the cholinergic system. After its administration, oleoylethanolamide is quickly degraded into oleic acid and ethanolamine. The effect of oleic acid on the gut-brain axis has been extensively investigated, whereas ethanolamine has received scarce attention. However, there is scattered evidence from old and recent research that has underlined the influence of ethanolamine on the cholinergic system. In the present article, we pro

Experience with 5% ethanolamine oleate for sclerotherapy of oral vascular anomalies: A cohort of 15 consecutive patients.

PURPOSE: To describe the effectiveness and safety of a sclerotherapy protocol with 5% ethanolamine oleate (EO) at 0.1 mL/3 mm for oral vascular anomalies (OVAs). Our hypothesis is that EO applied at a concentration of 5% may decrease the number of sessions necessary for clinical healing. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We describe a cohort of 15 consecutive patients. OVAs <20 mm were included. Clinical data of the OVAs were collected. Descriptive and bivariate statistical analyses were performed. RESULTS: Fifteen of the 19 OVAs were varicosities and the lower lip was the most affected site (n = 7). T

Efficient Quantitative Analysis of Carboxyalkylpyrrole Ethanolamine Phospholipids: Elevated Levels in Sickle Cell Disease Blood.

γ-Hydroxy-α,β-unsaturated aldehydes, generated by oxidative damage of polyunsaturated phospholipids, form pyrrole derivatives that incorporate the ethanolamine phospholipid (EP) amino group such as 2-pentylpyrrole (PP)-EP and 2-(ω-carboxyalkyl)pyrrole (CAP)-EP derivatives: 2-(ω-carboxyethyl)pyrrole (CEP)-EP, 2-(ω-carboxypropyl)pyrrole (CPP)-EP, and 2-(ω-carboxyheptyl)pyrrole (CHP)-EP. Because EPs occur in vivo in various forms, a complex mixture of pyrrole-modified EPs with different molecular weights is expected to be generated. To provide a sensitive index of oxidative stress, all of the dif

Synthesis and anti-inflammatory effects of new piperazine and ethanolamine derivatives of H(1)-antihistaminic drugs.

In addition to their antihistamine effects, H1-receptor antagonists possess pharmacological properties that are not uniformly distributed among this class of drugs, such as anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic and antiplatelet activities. In this paper, Cyclizine (1-benzhydryl-4-methyl-piperazine, I), bromodiphenhydramine (2-[(4-bromophenyl)-phenylmethoxy]-N, N-dimethylethanamine, II) and some of their new piperazine and ethanolamine derivatives (III-VIII) inducing changes in substitution of phenyl and amine moieties were synthesized and their acute and chronic antiinflammatory effects were evalua

Fatty acid changes in rat brain ethanolamine phosphoglycerides during and following chronic exposure to trichloroethylene.

Rats were exposed by continuous inhalation to a moderate level of trichloroethylene (1720 mg/m3). The fatty acid pattern of brain ethanolamine phosphoglycerides was examined during exposure and after an additional exposure-free period. Alterations in the fatty acid pattern were noted after 30 days of exposure. An increased ratio of linoleic acid-derived (n-6) to linolenic acid-derived (n-3) fatty acids was observed in the cerebral cortex, the hippocampus, and the brain stem. Of the major fatty acids, arachidonic acid (20:4(n-6)) was increased in the cerebral cortex and the brain stem, while do

Genome Mining-Based Discovery of Fungal Macrolides Modified by glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI)-Ethanolamine Phosphate Transferase Homologues.

Through genome mining for fungal macrolide natural products, we discovered a characteristic family of putative macrolide biosynthetic gene clusters that contain a glycosylphosphatidylinositol-ethanolamine phosphate transferase (GPI-EPT) homologue. Through the heterologous expression of two clusters from Aspergillus kawachii and Colletotrichum incanum, new macrolides, including those with phosphoethanolamine or phosphocholine moieties, were formed. This study is the first demonstration of the tailoring steps catalyzed by GPI-EPT homologues in natural product biosynthesis, and it uncovers a new

Fatty acid composition of ethanolamine phosphoglycerides in different areas of the gerbil brain after chronic exposure to trichloroethylene.

Exposure of Mongolian gerbils to trichloroethylene (TCE) (320 ppm) in an inhalation chamber continuously for 3 mo resulted in an altered fatty acid pattern of phospholipid in discrete areas of the brain. Lipids were extracted from four brain regions: the cerebral cortex, the hippocampus, the cerebellar vermis posterior, and the brain stem. No changes induced by TCE were found in lipid class distribution among the different regions examined. Whole brain weights and weights of the dissected pieces were also unchanged. In ethanolamine phosphoglycerides from the cerebral cortex and the hippocampus
