Analysis of a survey of 36 French research committees on intracytoplasmic sperm injection.

BACKGROUND: In France, when a new medical technology is to be applied experimentally to human beings, it must adhere to the principles stipulated by the Huriet-Sérusclat law on biomedical research. This law requires that the validation of a protocol applicable to human beings, with its corollary protection and information dimensions, is first submitted to a research committee, known as a Consultative Committee Protecting Persons in Biomedical Research (CCPPRB). We aimed to survey the competence of these committees in biotechnology, and whether or not intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) had

Hidden data for research ethicists: an introduction to the concept and a series of papers.

THIS SPECIAL SECTION OF THE Journal of Empirical Research on Human Research Ethics (JERHRE) is based upon the assumption that much of the best empirical data relevant to research ethics is hidden from the view of Research Ethics Committee (REC) members and others who are interested in research ethics. There are at least three different senses in which ethics-relevant empirical research may be hidden: (1) it may be published in a journal that ethics committee members would not regularly read, (2) it may not use key words that would guide one to its ethics-relevant content, or (3) it may be sequ

Ethical issues concerning therapeutic studies in inflammatory bowel disease.

Physicians often take on responsibilities beyond medical care regarding their patients with ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease: they serve as the patients' advocates to nonmedical entities and individuals, including insurance companies, schools, employers, companions, and family members. These responsibilities create a more complex relationship between the patient and their IBD physician. In addition, these responsibilities may accentuate ethical issues for the physician who is also engaged in clinical treatment trials for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Ethical issues include therapeuti

A Survey of Scientist and Policy Makers' Attitudes Toward Research on Stored Human Biological Materials in Sri Lanka.

INTRODUCTION: Stored human samples and the establishment of biobanks are increasing in the world. Along with this there are the questions of ethics that arise such as the correct method of obtaining informed consent for research on stored samples and the policies involved in collaborative research using collected samples. This study is an attempt to evaluate the researchers, academics and policy makers' views on these ethical aspects. METHODS: This was an anonymised study involving a Sri Lankan population of researchers, ethics committee members, and policy makers. A self administered questio

Patient and IRB perspectives on biobank consent models: implications for international policy from Taiwan.

BACKGROUND: Biobank consent models are contested globally. The EU's GDPR Article 89, the US revised Common Rule (2018), and international guidelines offer divergent approaches to balancing participant autonomy and research efficiency. Despite ongoing policy debate, empirical evidence comparing research ethics oversight bodies (IRBs) with potential participants remains limited, particularly in Asia, where rapid biobank development has proceeded with limited stakeholder input. Taiwan's Human Biobank Management Act provides an opportunity to examine whether governance frameworks adequately addres

Perspectives of Researchers and Research Team Members Regarding Their Experience with sIRBs.

Our study examines the perspectives of researchers and other research team members who conducted National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded studies about their use of a single institutional review board (sIRB) review and onboarding process. More than 84% (n = 639) of respondents agreed that NIH-sponsored multisite clinical trials benefit from sIRB use. A higher proportion of super-users (>10 studies) of an sIRB than moderate users (1-10 studies) described the onboarding process positively (n = 119, 56% vs. n = 225, 42%, p = .01) and found sIRBs to be more cost-effective than a site-specific mo

Informed consent in human research: what to say and how to say it.

To ensure that the possibility of harm to human research subjects is minimized, clinical trials and other research protocols are subject to oversight by Institutional Review Boards (IRBs). IRBs require that subjects be fully informed about the real or potential risks of participation in a research study. The use of radiological examinations in research protocols subjects the participants to exposure to ionizing radiation, which in theory carries a risk of stochastic effects such as radiation-induced cancer, and in practice may lead to deterministic effects such as skin injury. Because IRB memb

Postmortem sperm retrieval: the effect of instituting guidelines.

PURPOSE: Postmortem sperm retrieval (PMSR) raises serious medical and ethical concerns. In this study we report the effect of intra-institutional guidelines developed for the permissibility of the procedure on the number of procurement procedures performed. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The family members of 22 men who died suddenly sought PMSR. We performed an institutional review board approved chart review of the requests for PMSR from 1994 to 2002. A set of guidelines addressing PMSR was developed by a panel of experts at our institution. Key elements included 1) evidence of intended paternity f

Comfort of Sexual and Behavioral Health Survey Research Participation among Undergraduate Students: Findings from a Random Sample of a Southern University.

Many institutional review board (IRB) members often classify online sexual and behavioral health surveys as not meeting the minimal risk standard under the Code of Federal Regulation (CFR) due to concerns that answering sensitive or controversial topics may cause discomfort. However, college students' comfortability in responding to such topics remains unknown. Undergraduate college students (n = 123) were asked about their comfort level in answering online survey questions about their sexual behaviors, alcohol use, drug use, and mental health. Additionally, the study examined demographic diff

Investigation of ethics approval as part of a research integrity assessment of randomised controlled trials in COVID-19 evidence syntheses: a meta-epidemiological study.

OBJECTIVES: Ethical compliance of randomised controlled trials (RCTs) documented as ethics committee (EC) approval is vital for participant protection but is often overlooked by evidence synthesis producers despite regulatory mandates. We aimed to systematically assess reporting of ethics approval and informed consent (IC) in RCTs included in evidence syntheses and examined its potential impact on the study pool as part of a research integrity assessment (RIA). DESIGN: Meta-epidemiological study. SETTING: Assessment of ethics approval; domain 3 of the RIA tool developed for evidence synthese

Protocol for a qualitative pilot study to explore ethical issues and stakeholder trust in the use of normothermic regional perfusion in organ donation in Canada.

INTRODUCTION: The process of controlled organ donation after circulatory determination of death (cDCDD) results in ischaemic injury to organs and leads to poorer outcomes in organ recipients. Although not yet used in Canada, normothermic regional perfusion (NRP) is a perfusion technology used postmortem with cDCDD donors to selectively restore perfusion of oxygenated blood to target organs in situ, reversing ischaemic injury and improving organ viability and post-transplant outcomes. However, NRP poses significant ethical challenges. To preserve trust in deceased donation, these ethical challe

Improving the Quality of Host Country Ethical Oversight of International Research: The Use of a Collaborative 'Pre-Review' Mechanism for a Study of Fexinidazole for Human African Trypanosomiasis.

Developing countries face numerous barriers to conducting effective and efficient ethics reviews of international collaborative research. In addition to potentially overlooking important scientific and ethical considerations, inadequate or insufficiently trained ethics committees may insist on unwarranted changes to protocols that can impair a study's scientific or ethical validity. Moreover, poorly functioning review systems can impose substantial delays on the commencement of research, which needlessly undermine the development of new interventions for urgent medical needs. In response to th

Fetal organ and xenograft transplantation.

The use of anencephalic fetuses and neonates as organ donors is technically feasible, and xenografts may be. Several ethical questions emerge, however, involving the appropriate use of such organs and what alterations, if any, in obstetric and neonatal management may be acceptable to increase the availability and likelihood of success of such organs.

Regulatory and ethical issues for phase I in utero gene transfer studies.

Clinical gene transfer research has involved adult and child subjects, and it is expected that gene transfer in fetal subjects will occur in the future. Some genetic diseases have serious adverse effects on the fetus before birth, and there is hope that prenatal gene therapy could prevent such disease progression. Research in animal models of prenatal gene transfer is actively being pursued. The prospect of human phase I in utero gene transfer studies raises important regulatory and ethical issues. One issue not previously addressed arises in applying U.S. research regulations to such studies.

Approval delays in multi-country COVID-19 trials: the case of COPCOV and the risk of therapeutic inertia.

BACKGROUND: Many multi-country COVID-19 clinical trials, including those for widely available repurposed drugs with strong safety profiles, were conceptualised quickly but were unable to influence clinical treatment guidelines. The Chloroquine/Hydroxychloroquine for the Prevention of COVID-19 (COPCOV) trial, a large multi-country clinical trial sponsored by the University of Oxford, sought to determine the efficacy of hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine as a prophylaxis for COVID-19 but faced approval delays and other bureaucratic challenges. Understanding the reasons for these delays will help

Consensus on Adolescent and Young Adult HIV Research Consent in Low- and Middle-Income Countries.

IMPORTANCE: Many adolescents and young adults (AYAs) in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) are excluded from HIV research because of challenges with informed consent for study participation, which makes it difficult to understand and improve the lives of AYAs living with HIV and AIDS in a wide variety of settings. OBJECTIVE: To help increase the inclusion of AYAs in HIV research, we developed a consensus statement on practical strategies for improving AYA consent in HIV research in LMICs. EVIDENCE REVIEW: The VOICE (HIV Youth Informed Consent & Ethics in Research) Working Group include
