Association between the TPH1 A218C polymorphism and antidepressant response: evidence from an updated ethnicity, antidepressant-specific, and ethnicity-antidepressant interaction meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Several studies have investigated the potential association between genetic polymorphisms of tryptophan hydroxylase 1 (TPH1) and antidepressant response. However, the results are inconsistent and inconclusive. Our aim was to assess the association of the TPH1 A218C polymorphism (rs1800532) with antidepressant response using ethnicity, antidepressant-specific, and ethnicity-antidepressant interactions in an updated meta-analysis. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Data were collected from the related literature published before December 2013 from MEDLINE and EMBASE databases. The meta-analysis

Trajectories of cross-ethnic friendships and their associations with school adjustment in ethnic minority adolescents.

Cross-ethnic peer relations are pivotal for ethnic minority adolescents. However, there is limited understanding of how their cross-ethnic friendships with majority peers in school develop over time. Addressing this, this study aimed to investigate individual trajectories of cross-ethnic friendship in school and how they predict long-term school adjustment. Our sample consisted of 1,445 Turkish- and Moroccan-heritage minority adolescents in 70 Belgian middle schools (52.6% boys, Mage = 15.07; 76.3% second generation), followed across three annual waves over 3 years. Latent growth mixture model

Race and ethnic variation in excessive daytime sleepiness: the multi-ethnic study of atherosclerosis.

This cross-sectional study utilized data from the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA). The sample included 5,173 older adults (mean age = 66.4 years) recruited from 6 field centers in the United States. Excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) was evaluated using two measures: self-report of feeling excessively sleepy ≤ 5 days per month and the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) > 12. White participants were more likely than other groups to report EDS ≤ 5 days per month. After controlling for covariates, African American and Hispanic participants remained less likely to report EDS ≤ 5 days per

Discrepancies in Race and Ethnicity Documentation: a Potential Barrier in Identifying Racial and Ethnic Disparities.

BACKGROUND: Data collection on race and ethnicity is critical in the assessment of racial disparities related to health. Studies comparing clinical and administrative data show discrepancies in race documentation and attribution. METHODS: Self-reported data from two studies were compared to demographics in the electronic health record (EHR) extracted from the Biomedical Translational Research Information System (BTRIS) repository. McNemar and Bhapkar analyses were conducted to quantify the agreement of ethnicity and race between self-reported and EHR data. Pearson's chi-square tests were used

Association of renin and aldosterone with ethnicity and blood pressure: the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis.

BACKGROUND: Although variations in plasma renin activity (PRA) and aldosterone have been examined in whites and blacks, the association of these hormones with blood pressure in multiethnic populations has not been described. METHODS: We measured PRA and aldosterone in 1,021 participants in the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis not taking antihypertensives and examined the association between ethnicity and PRA/aldosterone and the association between PRA/aldosterone with systolic blood pressure (SBP). RESULTS: Average age was 62 (SD = 9) years, and 49% of participants were women. Median PR

Differences in the incidence of congestive heart failure by ethnicity: the multi-ethnic study of atherosclerosis.

BACKGROUND: The relationship between incident congestive heart failure (CHF) and ethnicity as well as racial/ethnic differences in the mechanisms leading to CHF have not been demonstrated in a multiracial, population-based study. Our objective was to evaluate the relationship between race/ethnicity and incident CHF. METHODS: The Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA) is a cohort study of 6814 participants of 4 ethnicities: white (38.5%), African American (27.8%), Hispanic (21.9%), and Chinese American (11.8%). Participants with a history of cardiovascular disease at baseline were exclud

Ethnicity and involuntary hospitalisation: a study of intersectional effects.

PURPOSE: Studies have found that the Mental Health Act is used disproportionally among minoritised ethnicities. Yet, little research has been conducted to understand how the intersectionality of ethnicity with sociodemographic factors relates to involuntary admission. This study aimed to investigate whether an association between ethnicity and involuntary hospitalisation is altered by variations in service-users' sociodemographic positions. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study using records from the South London and Maudsley identified 18,569 service-users with a first episode of hospitalisa

Disparities by Race and Ethnicity in Percutaneous Coronary Intervention.

IMPORTANCE: Hispanic and non-Hispanic Black patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) are less likely than White non-Hispanic patients to receive guideline-recommended percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Research suggests disparities arise before and during STEMI treatment, but it is unclear when the largest disparities in PCI emerge. OBJECTIVE: To assess when in the care process the largest disparities in PCI receipt occur in patients with STEMI presenting to an emergency department. Preterm Birth Risk and Maternal Nativity, Ethnicity, and Race.

IMPORTANCE: Immigrant birthing people have lower rates of preterm birth compared with their US-born counterparts. This advantage and associated racial and ethnic disparities across the gestational age spectrum have not been examined nationally. OBJECTIVE: To examine associations of maternal nativity, ethnicity, and race with preterm birth. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cohort study used birth certificates from the National Vital Statistics System to analyze in-hospital liveborn singleton births in the US between January 1, 2009, and December 31, 2018. Data were analyzed from Januar

Why is ethnicity a risk factor for postpartum haemorrhage?

Postpartum haemorrhage (PPH) is a leading cause of maternal mortality and morbidity on a global scale. Ethnic background is known to be a determinant of variation in the outcomes of women receiving maternity care across the world. Despite free maternity healthcare in the UK National Health Service, women with an ethnic minority background giving birth have an increased risk of PPH, even when other characteristics of the mother, the baby and the care received are considered. Improving PPH care has significant implications for improving health equity. The underlying causes of ethnic disparities

Weight gain during midlife: Does race/ethnicity influence risk?

Fears regarding weight gain and body changes commonly plague midlife women. The aim of this paper is to discuss the impact of weight gain and body changes on midlife women across various cultural backgrounds. Midlife weight gain in women is associated with age as opposed to menopausal status. Weight gain during midlife occurs across all cultural/ethnic groups; however, African Americans and Hispanic women exhibit higher rates of weight gain than their Caucasian counterparts. Although use of menopause hormone replacement therapy does not produce a clinical difference in weight gain, exercise de

Race or ethnicity and education in cardiac rehabilitation enrollment.

BACKGROUND: Although cardiac rehabilitation (CR) has established benefits for cardiovascular health, it remains significantly underutilized, with substantial differences in participation related to factors such as educational attainment (EA), race, and ethnicity. We studied a geographically and racially diverse cohort of insured individuals in a health claims database to (1) evaluate differences in CR participation by EA and race or ethnicity and (2) assess how EA modifies associations between race or ethnicity and CR participation. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of indivi

Donor Ethnicity and Kidney Transplant Outcomes in African Americans.

BACKGROUND: Transplantation of African American (AA) compared to non-AA donor kidneys is generally associated with inferior outcomes. It is unclear whether enhanced genetic risk associated with AA donor kidneys would be counterbalanced by favorable immunologic matching when AA donor kidneys are transplanted into AA recipients. We aimed to compare the outcomes of AA vs non-AA deceased-donor kidneys (DDKs) stratified by kidney donor profile index (KDPI) that were transplanted into AA recipients. METHODS: Using the Organ Procurement and Transplant Network/United Network for Organ Sharing databas

Effect of race and ethnicity on renal transplant referral
.

BACKGROUND: Multiple studies have revealed disparity in renal healthcare access and outcomes in racial/ethnic minorities with the socioeconomic status explaining the majority but not all of the disparity. We wanted to determine if racial/ethnic disparities existed at the first step toward renal transplantation, the renal transplant referral process. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cohort of 200 adult end-stage renal disease patients was followed retrospectively for 2 years from January 2016 to February 2018. The study exposure was based on self-declared race/ethnicity of the patients, who were categ

Migration, ethnicity and psychoses: evidence, models and future directions.

There is a large body of research reporting high rates of psychotic disorders among many migrant and minority ethnic groups, particularly in Northern Europe. In the context of increasing migration and consequent cultural diversity in many places worldwide, these findings are a major social and public health concern. In this paper, we take stock of the current state of the art, reviewing evidence on variations in rates of psychoses and putative explanations, including relevant theories and models. We discuss in particular: a) the wide variation in reported rates of psychotic disorders by ethnic

The influence of maternal ethnicity on neonatal respiratory outcome.

OBJECTIVE: Higher rates of neonatal morbidity and mortality at term combined with earlier spontaneous delivery have led to the hypothesis that babies born to South Asian born (SA-born) women may mature earlier and/or their placental function decreases earlier than babies born to Australian and New Zealand born (Aus/NZ-born) women. Whether babies born to SA-born women do better in the preterm period, however, has yet to be evaluated. In this study we investigated respiratory outcomes, indicative of functional maturity, of preterm babies born to SA-born women compared with those of Aus/NZ-born w

Explaining Health Outcomes of Asian Immigrants: Does Ethnicity Matter?

The present study intended to evaluate whether 4 discrete ethnic groups of Asian immigrants could, for empirical reasons, be assigned a set of unique operating factors explaining health outcomes of members. The set comprised several acculturation, social structure, lifestyle, and health-related factors. Our study asked if these factors uniformly explained health outcomes across the 4 groups. We pooled National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) data dating 1999-2015 and developed 2 outcomes: self-rated health and self-reported chronic illness (specifically, diagnosis of cardiovascular disease, pre
