[An enormous oviduct hematoma coexisting with a residual uterus horn in an adolescent].

The case of tremendous salpinx hematoma coexisting with a residual uterus horn has been described. A menstrual blood from the little cavity of residual horn filled progressively the salpinx, which had abdominal ostium closed. A congenital malformation, in consequence of Muller tubes defective development, has been a direct cause of the disease. The ethology of the malformation has not been found. Primary diagnosis suggested an ovarian cyst or a malignant tumour. Neither physical examination nor USG made the diagnosis easier. The case has showed, how difficult the recognition of pelvic tumours

[Anesthesia in domestic animals (small mammals, psittacines and reptiles)].

The presentation of small animals and exotic pets (birds, reptiles) in veterinary practice is increasing. Physiological and ethological variations demand specific precautions in restraining/ anesthetizing these patients. In Psittacines hypoglycemia, hypoxia and hypothermia are typical side-effects. Long-acting recovery control in birds and reptiles is necessary.

Age-Associated Behavioral Alterations in Laboratory-Housed Octodon degus.

Octodon degus are long-lived, diurnal, and highly social rodents increasingly used in studies of aging and neurodegeneration. However, behavioral profiles of aged laboratory-housed degus remain incompletely characterized, limiting the interpretation of aging-associated functional and molecular phenotypes in this species. Here, we evaluated age-associated changes in locomotor activity, open-field exploration, social novelty behavior, and manually scored ethological responses in young and old degus maintained under long-term laboratory housing conditions. Automated behavioral tracking was perfor

Nest-building behavior in laboratory mice: Multifunctional roles and neural mechanisms.

Nest-building is a multifunctional and evolutionarily conserved behavior across vertebrate species, serving critical roles in rest, thermoregulation, and offspring care. In laboratory mice, nest-building occurs spontaneously under standard housing conditions and provides an ethologically relevant window into innate behavior modulated by internal state and environmental context. Although nest-building is regarded as an innate behavior, emerging evidence demonstrates its plasticity: it is shaped by experience, hormonal state, ambient temperature, and sleep pressure. Moreover, nest-building is se

Representations of Fine Digit Movements in Posterior and Anterior Parietal Cortex Revealed Using Long-Train Intracortical Microstimulation in Macaque Monkeys.

The current investigation in macaque monkeys utilized long-train intracortical microstimulation to determine the extent of cortex from which movements could be evoked. Not only were movements evoked from motor areas (PMC and M1), but they were also evoked from posterior parietal (5, 7a, 7b) and anterior parietal areas (3b, 1, 2). Large representations of digit movements involving only the index finger (D2) and thumb (D1), were elicited from areas 1, 2, 7b, and M1. Other movements evoked from these regions were similar to ethologically relevant movements that have been described in other primat

Comparative, topographically-based evaluation of behavioural phenotype and specification of D(1)-like:D(2) interactions in a line of incipient congenic mice with D(2) dopamine receptor 'knockout'.

Phenotypes were assessed topographically in mice lacking functional D(2) dopamine receptors ['knockouts'], using an ethologically based approach to assess all behaviours in the natural repertoire. D(2)-null mice evidenced an ethogram characterised initially by modest reductions in locomotion and shifts in rearing topographies. Subsequently, topographies of behaviour habituated similarly for wildtypes and 'knockouts'. Following challenge with the D(2)-like agonist RU 24213, both inhibition of rearing at a lower dose and induction of stereotyped sniffing and ponderous locomotion at higher doses

Kinematic signatures of prey capture from archival tags reveal sex differences in killer whale foraging activity.

Studies of odontocete foraging ecology have been limited by the challenges of observing prey capture events and outcomes underwater. We sought to determine whether subsurface movement behavior recorded from archival tags could accurately identify foraging events by fish-eating killer whales. We used multisensor bio-logging tags attached by suction cups to Southern Resident killer whales (Orcinus orca) to: (1) identify a stereotyped movement signature that co-occurred with visually confirmed prey capture dives; (2) construct a prey capture dive detector and validate it against acoustically conf

PSD-95 drives binocular vision maturation critical for predation.

Postsynaptic density protein 95 (PSD-95) is a signalling scaffold within the postsynaptic density of excitatory synapses which drives silent synapse maturation during critical periods (CP). Binocularity develops during visual CPs and matures before its closure. Despite lifelong critical period plasticity, PSD-95 knock-out (KO) mice were reported with only subtle sensory phenotypes as adults. To assess PSD-95's role in ethologically relevant binocular visual processing, we compared prey capture behaviour in PSD-95 KO and wild-type (WT) mice. KO mice were profoundly impaired in diverse epochs of

Critical neuropsychobiological analysis of panic attack- and anticipatory anxiety-like behaviors in rodents confronted with snakes in polygonal arenas and complex labyrinths: a comparison to the elevated plus- and T-maze behavioral tests.

OBJECTIVE:: To compare prey and snake paradigms performed in complex environments to the elevated plus-maze (EPM) and T-maze (ETM) tests for the study of panic attack- and anticipatory anxiety-like behaviors in rodents. METHODS:: PubMed was reviewed in search of articles focusing on the plus maze test, EPM, and ETM, as well as on defensive behaviors displayed by threatened rodents. In addition, the authors' research with polygonal arenas and complex labyrinth (designed by the first author for confrontation between snakes and small rodents) was examined. RESULTS:: The EPM and ETM tests evoke

Impact of Pharmacological Manipulation of the κ-Opioid Receptor System on Self-grooming and Anhedonic-like Behaviors in Male Mice.

The kappa (κ) opioid receptor/dynorphin system modulates depression-like states and anhedonia, as well adaptations to stress and exposure to drugs of abuse. Several relatively short-acting small molecule κ-receptor antagonists have been synthesized, and their behavioral profile has been examined under some conditions. The hypothesis of this study is that pharmacological manipulations of the κ-receptor system will result in changes in ethologically relevant anhedonic-like behaviors in mice. Adult male C57BL/6j mice (n = 6-8) were examined for self-grooming behavior in the splash test (in which

Quantitative and Discrete Evolutionary Changes in the Egg-Laying Behavior of Single Drosophila Females.

How a nervous system assembles and coordinates a suite of elementary behavioral steps into a complex behavior is not well understood. While often presented as a stereotyped sequence of events, even extensively studied behaviors such as fly courtship are rarely a strict repetition of the same steps in a predetermined sequence in time. We are focusing on oviposition, the act of laying an egg, in flies of the genus Drosophila to describe the elementary behavioral steps or microbehaviors that a single female fly undertakes prior to and during egg laying. We have analyzed the hierarchy and relation

[Feline asthma and chronic bronchitis - an overview of diagnostics and therapy].

Feline asthma and feline chronic bronchitis are considered the most common chronic lower respiratory diseases in cats and are frequently referred to by the term chronic bronchial diseases. In feline asthma, a hypersensitivity reaction type I is suspected. For chronic bronchitis, the aetiology remains largely unknown. Affected cats may suffer from coughing, dyspnoea, and increased respiratory sounds. Both conditions are currently defined by the cytological cell pattern in the bronchoalveolar lavage and may differ in ethology, treatment, and clinical course. For diagnosis, other underlying condi

Octodon degus laboratory colony management principles and methods for behavioral analysis for Alzheimer's disease neuroscience research.

The Chilean degu (Octodon degus) is a medium sized, long-lived rodent with traits that make them a natural model for neuroscience research. Their social behaviors, diurnality, and extended developmental time course, when compared to other rodents, make them useful for social behavioral, chronobiology, and developmental research. Lab-kept degus have a long lifespan (5-8 years) and may naturally develop age-related diseases that resemble Alzheimer's disease. While there is significant interest in using the Octodon degus for neuroscience research, including aging and Alzheimer's disease studies,

Acoustic variability and distinguishability among mouse ultrasound vocalizations.

Auditory neurobiology has benefited significantly from ethological approaches using acoustic communication signals. Developing an ethological model in a genetically manipulable system such as the mouse would enhance the ability to investigate the processing, learning, and recognition of sounds. Characterizing the basic acoustic structure of mouse vocalizations would help lay a foundation for such a future study. Towards this goal, ultrasound vocalizations emitted by isolated mouse pups and pairs of adult males and females have been digitally recorded and examined. Previous work suggests that t

Homologizing primate facial displays: a critical review of methods.

The applicability of previously established criteria for identifying homologous behavioural traits to the ritualized facial displays of primates is discussed and illustrated with several examples. (1) Homologizing of facial displays is based on (a) their stereotypy, (b) their nature as compounds of individual facial actions, and--to a lesser extent--(c) the homology of the muscle substrate by which the displays are accomplished. (2) Sequences of gradually changing displays ('Merkmalsreihen') can be constructed by considering related extant species, different ontogenetic stages, and variation a

[A quantitative analyzing method for drug-induced tremor].

A method for analyzing drug-induced tremor in mice was developed using a power spectral analysis of the random current induced by the movement of a magnet attached to a mouse on a wire coil. The power spectral density function defined the frequency composition of the drug-induced tremor, and the mean square value of the data in any frequency range of concern was determined.

Do rodent social hierarchy assays measure social dominance or task performance?

Social hierarchy is a critical variable in rodent models of stress psychopathology and is often assessed using simplified competitive paradigms. These tasks frequently lack sufficient construct validity for social dominance, limiting interpretations of the neural mechanisms underlying social behavior. Advances in behavioral tracking now permit more ethologically grounded assessments of social dominance and provide a superior alternative to study social dominance.

Do all mice smell the same? Chemosensory cues from inbred and wild mouse strains elicit stereotypic sensory representations in the accessory olfactory bulb.

BACKGROUND: For many animals, chemosensory cues are vital for social and defensive interactions and are primarily detected and processed by the vomeronasal system (VNS). These cues are often inherently associated with ethological meaning, leading to stereotyped behaviors. Thus, one would expect consistent representation of these stimuli across different individuals. However, individuals may express different arrays of vomeronasal sensory receptors and may vary in the pattern of connections between those receptors and projection neurons in the accessory olfactory bulb (AOB). In the first part o
