Ethylene glycol is the main component of antifreeze, due to its special sweetness, it is easy to cause misuse. In this paper, the clinical data of 4 cases of acute ethylene glycol poisoning admitted to Beijing Chao-Yang Hospital from August 2016 to August 2021 were retrospectively analyzed to explore the clinical characteristics of acute ethylene glycol poisoning cases. Early and accurate assessment of the disease and early hemodialysis treatment is the key to cure acute ethylene glycol poisoning.

Ethylene glycol is a sweet-tasting toxic alcohol contained in a variety of chemical preparations. In patients poisoned with ethylene glycol, diagnosis is often based upon clinical suspicion and nonspecific tests. Hypocalcemia is often present due to calcium oxalate crystals formed by oxalic acid metabolite complexation. Cheap and easy to access, ethylene glycol is used in the synthesis of antifreezes. Intoxication has potentially irreversible morbid consequences. Ingestion of a small amount can lead to death. Due to its ubiquitous distribution and potential complications, it is of paramount importance for the practitioner to recognize its manifestations and metabolic complications in order to implement its therapy in partnership with the nephrologist and the intensivist. A successful treatment depends on rapid and multidisciplinary management, as reviewed in this article.

A series of oligo(ethylene glycols) was efficiently tosylated by ultrasound procedure within dichloromethane in the presence of triethylamine. Results show that sonochemical synthesis of oligo(ethylene glycol) ditosylates has a double advantage since it does not use catalysts and it drastically reduces the reaction time. This straightforward method represents an eco-friendly alternative to the traditional tosylation by pyridine synthesis.

The alcoholic patient, in an attempt to maintain an altered mental status, may ingest ethanol substitutes containing methanol, ethylene glycol, or isopropanol. The subsequent clinical presentation in the Emergency Department is highly variable and depends on the ethanol substitute ingested, the time since ingestion, and concomitant ethanol abuse. This article describes the clinical features of intoxication by the ethanol substitutes. Early diagnosis and therapeutic intervention may prevent irreversible sequelae. The rationale for treatment interventions is discussed.

Almost a decade ago, a single chronic hemodialysis patient in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, who was experiencing recurrent acute reactions during hemodialysis was found to have become allergic to ethylene oxide gas (EO). A fatal case of poisoning by a mixture of methanol and ethylene glycol is described. A 72-year-old man was hospitalized when he was found stuporous to semicomatose, and despite massive bicarbonate therapy, died 36 hr after the admission. While the presence of numerous oxalate crystals in urine strongly suggested ethylene glycol intoxication, the GC analysis of the liquid the patient ingested revealed that he presumably drunk about 150 to 200 ml of a mixture of methanol (80%) and ethylene glycol (20%), the amount well over the lowest lethal dose when the additiveness of toxicity was considered.

A bioassay for rhizosphere-applied phytotoxicants was developed and evaluated with a broad range of chemicals. Test substances were applied to the rhizosphere of whole, intact bush bean plants (Phaseolus vulgaris L. cv. Bush Blue Lake 290) grown in a solid support medium and the resultant ethylene production was measured to detect the presence of phytotoxic materials. We report a highly enantioselective organocatalyzed Michael addition of N-substituted 3-chlorooxindoles to 1,1-bis(arylsulfonyl)ethylenes. With a readily available quinine-derived catalyst under mild conditions, this reaction delivers chiral 3,3-disubstituted oxindoles in high yields (up to 93%) and enantioselectivities (up to 92% ee).
