This work reports the occurrence of coccidia of the genus Calyptospora in fishes from the eastern Amazon. Fish were collected on flood plains in the municipality of Macapá, State of Amapá, Brazil. Fresh squash preparations of liver, heart and gallbladder were examined under light microscope. Positive samples of Geophagus proximus and Hoplias malabaricus were used to detect parasites by PCR with Calyptospora-specific primers mRF and mrR, which amplify a region of the 18S rRNA gene. Oocysts were observed in 55% of 130 fishes examined. Parasite prevalence varied according to feeding habits, and w

Hepatozoon canis (Eucoccidiorida, Hepatozoidae) and the filarioid Cercopithifilaria bainae (Spirurida, Onchocercidae) are tick-transmitted infectious agents of dogs, highly prevalent in the Mediterranean basin in association with Rhipicephalus sanguineus sensu lato. Ticks were collected from the environment every 25±2 days in a confined location in southern Italy where a community of dogs lives, from August 2012 to July 2013. In order to study the occurrence of H. canis and C. bainae, 1091 tick specimens (770 adults; 271 nymphs, and 50 larvae) were dissected, and oocysts of H. canis and larvae

Laboratory-reared larval Gulf Coast ticks (GCTs) (Amblyomma maculatum) were exposed experimentally and found to acquire Hepatozoon americanum infection while feeding on parasitemic dogs. These ticks supported gamogonic and sporogonic development of the apicomplexan, and oocysts from newly molted nymphs were infectious for a dog. Other nymphs from this cohort that were allowed to feed on a blood-parasite naive sheep molted normally; the resulting adult ticks contained oocysts that were infectious for another dog. Merogonic development of H. americanum in the dogs and the resulting lesions/disea

Tick-borne diseases represent important illnesses in dogs, but information about their occurrence in some regions of northeastern Brazil is still limited. Considering the possible differences in the distribution of these agents among the various regions of the country, this study aimed to investigate the prevalence of Babesia vogeli, Ehrlichia canis, Hepatozoon spp., and Borrelia spp., as well as factors associated with these infections in urban dogs from the Brejo Paraibano microregion. To this end, canine blood samples were analyzed using TaqMan real-time PCR protocols or conventional PCR. O

In this study, we investigated the occurrence of Hepatozoon spp. and Cytauxzoon felis in spleen samples from 26 wild carnivorans and blood samples from 28 semi-domiciled dogs collected in the Pantanal biome of Brazil. Partial 18S rRNA gene sequences of Hepatozoon spp. were detected in 15 (57.7 %) wild carnivorans and 3 (10.7 %) domestic dogs. A sequence obtained from a domestic dog was similar (99.04 %) to that of Hepatozoon canis from a crab-eating fox (Cerdocyon thous) in the same area of Brazil. Moreover, we report the neotropical otter (Lontra longicaudis) and the bush dog (Speothos venati

Protothecosis is a severe, emerging opportunistic infection caused by the saprophytic, achlorophyllous microalgae of the genus Prototheca. Though uncommon, human and animal cases are increasing worldwide, making awareness of this fungal-like pathogen important in both human and veterinary medicine. We report a fatal case of disseminated protothecosis caused by P. wickherhamii in a 10-year-old, spayed, female, mixed-breed collie dog. Clinical signs included uveitis, ulcerated cutaneous nodules on the limbs and face, pododermatitis with nail loss and, lymphadenomegaly in the prescapular and popl

The Iberian population of the European wildcat (Felis silvestris) is undergoing a decline and is highly fragmented. This study aimed to determine the occurrence and identity of tick-borne parasites (piroplasms and Hepatozoon spp.) in Navarre, one of the strongholds for wildcats in Spain. DNA was extracted from spleen samples of 63 road-killed wildcats and analyzed using a suite of molecular protocols targeting the 18S rRNA and CytB gene fragments. Eighty percent of the wildcats tested positive for at least one parasite. Cytauxzoon spp. was detected in 65 % of the individuals. Molecular charact

Hepatozoon spp. are increasingly reported in cats from Mediterranean countries, but data for Central and Northern Europe remain limited. This study investigated the occurrence and molecular diversity of Hepatozoon spp. in 1357 blood samples from cats living in Germany and other European countries using real-time PCR targeting the 18S rRNA gene. Hepatozoon spp. DNA was detected in 58 cats (4.3 %; 95 %-CI: 3.3-5.5 %). Thirty-seven positive samples were further analyzed by conventional PCR and sequencing. Four sequence types (A-D) were detected. Hepatozoon felis sequences classified within the ge

Vector-borne diseases represent a growing global threat, exposing new populations to previously unknown infectious agents, and posing diagnostic challenges for veterinarians. The aim of this article is to present a clinical case of coinfection with different hemoparasites in a canine with severe ectoparasite infestation and clinical signs of shock. Blood smears and complete necropsy were performed. Samples of different organs were obtained for histopathological and molecular biology studies. Examination of the blood smears showed azurophilic intracytoplasmic structures, compatible with the mor

Pakistan is home to a rich rodent fauna, yet no investigations have been conducted on the presence of Haemogregarines in these animals, leaving their epidemiology and genetic diversity in this subtropical region unexplored. In this study, blood samples from four wild rodent species, Rattus (R.) rattus (n = 122), Mus (M.) musculus (n = 64), Rattus norvegicus (n = 57), and Dryomys nitedula (n = 1), were collected between May 2022 and July 2023 from three districts in Punjab and three in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. PCR targeting a fragment of 600 base pairs from the 18 S rDNA gene revealed a 2.86% (7/244

Angiostrongylus vasorum was identified in the lungs of a red fox (Vulpes vulpes) from West Virginia, United States (US), indicating a new geographical location for this metastrongylid nematode. The fox was euthanized and submitted for necropsy after displaying erratic behavior. We did not detect rabies virus or canine distemper virus from the fox. We observed bronchopneumonia associated with A. vasorum infection disseminated in both lungs. In addition, protozoal meronts were observed in the liver, spleen, and mesenteric lymph node, and were identified as Hepatozoon canis. Lymphoid depletion wa

Some tick-borne pathogens that infect domestic cats have been considered emergent in veterinary medicine. Occurrences of Hepatozoon spp., Babesia spp. and Cytauxzoon spp. have been described in several regions of Brazil. This paper offers a comprehensive analysis of the 18S rRNA gene of a Hepatozoon sp. strain detected in domestic cats in the metropolitan area of Cuiabá, in Midwestern Brazil. Based on a molecular analysis, we detected the presence of Hepatozoon species circulating among cats in this region. The aforementioned strain is closely related to other isolates of H. felis detected in

AIDS is characteristically associated with several intracellular enteric protozoan infections that often cause chronic and sometimes fatal intractable large-volume diarrhea. Until the AIDS epidemic, several of these parasitic infections were almost unknown as causes of human disease. This article reviews the diseases produced by cryptosporidia, isospora, cyclospora, and microsporidia in humans.

Dogs, being companion animals, serve a variety of economic, social and cultural purposes. However, diseases caused by the tick-borne protozoans are drawing attention globally due to their zoonotic transmission. In this context, the present study aimed to observe the occurrence of tick-borne protozoan infections as well as some selective haematological parameters of stray dogs in Dhaka city, Bangladesh. A total of 160 dogs from various places were selected randomly and examined for both tick and protozoan infection. Only one species of hard tick, Rhipicephalus sanguineus, was identified, where

Cyclospora is a coccidian (previously referred to as cyanobacterium-like bodies) that has been implicated in cases of prolonged diarrhoea. The average duration of symptoms is more than three weeks, and no specific treatment has been shown to shorten the illness. A case report suggested that co-trimoxazole may be effective. Expatriate persons with gastrointestinal complaints and cyclospora detected on examination of faeces were recruited from two clinics in Kathmandu, Nepal, between May and August, 1994. Participants were assigned in a randomised, double-blinded manner to receive either cotrimo
