Peptides from Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) ameliorate acute liver injury in mice induced by carbon tetrachloride via activating the Nrf2/HO-1 pathway.

This study aimed to evaluate the hepatoprotective effects of peptides from Antarctic krill (AKP) on carbon tetrachloride (CCl4)-induced acute liver injury (ALI) in mice and the underlying molecular mechanisms. ICR mice were pretreated with AKP (500 mg kg-1, i.g.) and silybin (30 mg kg-1, i.g.) for 15 days before CCl4 (0.25 mL per kg BW, i.p.) injection. To assess hepatocellular damage and molecular indices, the serum and liver tissue were evaluated at harvest. The results showed that AKP pretreatment remarkably attenuated CCl4-induced liver injury, which was identified by the decrease in serum

Investigation of the Effect of Krill Oil on Sortilin in Liver and Adipose Tissue in Obese Rats.

Sortilin regulates lipid metabolism, adipogenesis, and inflammation in obesity. While the anti-inflammatory and lipid-modulating effects of krill oil (KO) on obesity are well known, its effects on sortilin remain insufficiently investigated. This study investigates the potential effects of KO supplementation on sortilin and pro-inflammatory cytokine levels in rats fed a high-fat diet (HFD). Twenty-four male Sprague Dawley rats were randomly assigned to three groups: standard diet (SD), HFD, and HFD + KO (600 mg/kg/day KO via oral gavage for 12 weeks). Body weights were monitored weekly. Serum

Effect of Chronic Krill Oil Supplement on Seizures Induced by Pentylenetetrazole in the Hippocampus of Adult Rats with Previous Febrile Seizures.

We evaluated the effect of krill oil (KO) supplement on seizures induced by pentylenetetrazole (PTZ) in animals with previous febrile seizures (FSs) induced by hyperthermia to determine its effectiveness in seizure susceptibility and as an anticonvulsant. Male Wistar rats with FS separated into water (W, 1 mL), palm oil (PO, 300 mg/kg, total volume 1 mL), or KO (300 mg/kg, total volume 1 mL) groups. All drugs were administered chronically via the intragastric route. Electrical activity was recorded by intracranial EEG simultaneously with convulsive behavior. All animals' brains were processed

Enhanced cognitive function and antidepressant-like effects after krill oil supplementation in rats.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of the study was to evaluate the effects of krill oil (KO) on cognition and depression-like behaviour in rats. METHODS: Cognition was assessed using the Aversive Light Stimulus Avoidance Test (ALSAT). The Unavoidable Aversive Light Stimulus (UALST) and the Forced Swimming Test (FST) were used to evaluate the antidepressant-like effects of KO. Imipramine (IMIP) was used as the antidepressant reference substance. RESULTS: After 7 weeks of KO intake, both males and females treated with KO were significantly better in discriminating between the active and the inactive lev

The time course of erythrocyte membrane fatty acid concentrations during and after treatment of non-human primates with increasing doses of an omega-3 rich phospholipid preparation derived from krill-oil.

BACKGROUND: A commonly used measure to reflect the intake of the long-chain omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA is the omega-3 index, defined as the sum of EPA + DHA as % of total fatty acids in erythrocyte membrane. When the omega-3 index changes it follows that the relative fractions of other fatty acids in the membrane are also changed. In the present study, increasing doses of a preparation of omega-3 rich phospholipids extracted from krill oil were administered orally to non-human primates for 12 weeks and the time course of EPA, DHA and 22 other fatty acids in erythrocytes was determined bi-

Krill Oil Inhibits NLRP3 Inflammasome Activation in the Prevention of the Pathological Injuries of Diabetic Cardiomyopathy.

Diabetic cardiomyopathy (DCM) is a common complication of diabetes mellitus (DM), resulting in high mortality. Myocardial fibrosis, cardiomyocyte apoptosis and inflammatory cell infiltration are hallmarks of DCM, leading to cardiac dysfunction. To date, few effective approaches have been developed for the intervention of DCM. In the present study, we investigate the effect of krill oil (KO) on the prevention of DCM using a mouse model of DM induced by streptozotocin and a high-fat diet. The diabetic mice developed pathological features, including cardiac fibrosis, apoptosis and inflammatory ce

KARAOKE: Krill oil versus placebo in the treatment of knee osteoarthritis: protocol for a randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Knee osteoarthritis (OA) is a common and important cause of pain and disability, but interventions aimed at modifying structures visible on imaging have been disappointing. While OA affects the whole joint, synovitis and effusion have been recognised as having a role in the pathogenesis of OA. Krill oil reduces knee pain and systemic inflammation and could be used for targeting inflammatory mechanisms of OA. METHODS/DESIGN: We will recruit 260 patients with clinical knee OA, significant knee pain and effusion-synovitis present on MRI in five Australian cities (Hobart, Melbourne, S

The opposite effects of Antarctic krill oil and arachidonic acid-rich oil on bone resorption in ovariectomized mice.

Osteoporosis, a chronic disease that affects over 200 million people worldwide, presents a substantial medical and socioeconomic burden on the modern society. However, long-term intake of diets supplemented with different polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) can affect bone metabolism; thus, this study investigated the comparative effects of Antarctic krill oil (AKO, containing n-3 PUFAs) and arachidonic acid-rich oil (AAO, containing n-6 PUFAs) on bone resorption in a mice model of postmenopausal osteoporosis. Mice were orally administered with AKO (200 mg kg-1) or AAO (220 mg kg-1) once daily

Efficacy of food supplement to improve metabolic syndrome parameters in patients affected by moderate to severe psoriasis during anti-TNFα treatment.

AIM: Psoriasis is a systemic inflammatory immune-mediated skin disease. Recently a relationship with metabolic syndrome in terms of psoriasis severity and response to therapy was observed. METHODS: We performed an open-label randomized controlled study to evaluate the role of a nutraceutical containing Q10 coenzyme, Krill-oil, lipoic acid, resveratrol, Vitis vinifera seed oil, vitamin E and selenium in addition to etanercept therapy for patients affected by psoriasis and metabolic syndrome. Forty patients were enrolled and divided into two arms, one receiving only etanercept, one other receiv
