In Mexico, Cnidoscolus aconitifolius (chaya) has been used to treat cardiovascular diseases (CVD). Because CVD are the number one cause of mortality, chaya use has become a health strategy. The aim of this study was to evaluate the antithrombotic activity and identify the metabolites in the most active extract. Post-treatment of the indomethacin induced ulcerated rats at the optimal dose of 100 mg/kg body-wt. orally for 7 consecutive days with the lyophilized aqueous extract of the fruits ofPhyllanthus emblica L. syn.Emblica officinalis Gaertn. (Euphorbiaceae) exhibited highly significant (p<0.001) enhancement of secretion of catalase, reduced glutathione and decrease in malonyldialdehyde (MDA). Furthermore, the gross morphological observation and highly significant (p<0.001) decrease of ulcer index (81.43%) indicated healing effect of the extract on gastric ulcer.

A 37-year-old recrute in the Royal Dutch Army developed blisters on the right cheek approximately 30 minutes after a boot camp exercise in the mangroves of the island of Curaçao. This bullous dermatitis was caused by direct contact with sap from the bark of the manzanilla tree (Hippomane mancinella). As a member of the family Euphorbiaceae, all parts of this tree are highly toxic. Even rain drops falling from the leaves can cause a bullous dermatitis. Usually, symptomatic treatment will allow healing of the dermatitis in a matter of weeks.
