Public Health Communication Challenges in Eastern Europe and Central Asia: A Scoping Review.

This scoping review examines public health communication across nine Eastern European and Central Asian states-Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan-highlighting how these systems have transitioned from Soviet-era legacies to contemporary practices. Eligibility criteria included the English- and Russian-language literature published from 1998 onwards, focusing on nine post-Soviet states. Sources of evidence comprised searches in Google Scholar, ScienceDirect, SSRN, Heliyon, MEDLINE/PubMed, and official government websites. Data w

Apremilast Use in Severe Psoriasis: Real-World Data from Central and Eastern Europe.

INTRODUCTION: The broad and sustained efficacy of apremilast for psoriasis has been demonstrated in randomized and real-world observational studies. Data from Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) are lacking. Moreover, apremilast use in this region is limited by country-specific reimbursement criteria. This is the first study to report data on the real-world use of apremilast in the region. METHODS: APPRECIATE (NCT02740218) was an observational, retrospective, cross-sectional study assessing psoriasis patients 6 (± 1) months after apremilast treatment initiation. The study aimed to describe the c

Antibiotic susceptibility profiles of Mycoplasma synoviae strains originating from Central and Eastern Europe.

BACKGROUND: Mycoplasma synoviae causes infectious synovitis and respiratory diseases in chickens and turkeys and may lead to egg shell apex abnormalities in chickens; hence possesses high economic impact on the poultry industry. Control of the disease consists of eradication, vaccination or medication. The aim of the present study was to determine the in vitro susceptibility to 14 different antibiotics and an antibiotic combination of M. synoviae strains originating from Hungary and other countries of Central and Eastern Europe. RESULTS: Minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) values of a tota

HIV prevention nongovernmental organizations in Central and Eastern Europe: programs, resources and challenges.

HIV incidence is rising more rapidly in some areas of Central and Eastern Europe than anywhere else in the world. Carrying out effective HIV prevention programs requires the presence of "bridges" that can reach community populations most vulnerable to the disease. Nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) are in a natural role to conduct HIV prevention programs. The Directors of 29 HIV prevention NGOs representing almost all countries in Central and Eastern Europe participated in in-depth interviews by telephone. The broad topics of these interviews included descriptions of the three largest progra

The state of vaccine confidence among the general public in Eastern Europe and Central Asia.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic brought global attention to challenges vaccination programs face in relation to public confidence and exposed important differences in vaccine acceptance worldwide-prompting renewed emphasis on monitoring of vaccine confidence. Most studies in Europe focus on the 27 European Union (EU) countries, with sparse evidence among the broader WHO European Region. This study extend coverage of vaccine confidence surveillance where such research is limited. METHODS: Members of the general public in North Macedonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Belarus, Armenia, Georgia, and

Addressing HIV stigma in healthcare, community, and legislative settings in Central and Eastern Europe.

INTRODUCTION: Surging HIV prevalence across countries of Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) is largely a result of poor HIV care engagement and a lack of comprehensive support for key populations. This is fostered by widespread stigma across healthcare, community, and legislative settings. DISCUSSION: Throughout CEE, HIV stigma and intersectional stigma are serious obstacles to providing adequate medical care to people living with HIV. Anticipated and enacted (experienced) stigma from healthcare professionals, and fears of breaches in confidentiality, deter individuals from having an HIV test a

Burden of varicella in Central and Eastern Europe: findings from a systematic literature review.

INTRODUCTION: Vaccination against varicella rapidly reduces disease incidence, resulting in reductions in both individual burden and societal costs. Despite these benefits, there is no standardization of varicella immunization policies in Europe, including countries in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE). AREAS COVERED: This systematic literature review identified publications on the epidemiology of varicella, its associated health and economic burden, and vaccination strategies within the CEE region, defined as Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hun

Survival of patients with multidrug-resistant TB in Eastern Europe: what makes a difference?

BACKGROUND: The quality of care for patients with TB in Eastern Europe has improved significantly; nevertheless drug resistance rates remain high. We analysed survival in a cohort of patients with multidrug-resistant and extensively drug-resistant (MDR-/XDR-) TB from Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia and Bucharest city. METHODS: Consecutive adult new and retreatment patients with culture-confirmed pulmonary MDR-TB registered for treatment in 2009 (and in 2007 in Latvia) were enrolled; prospective survival information was collected. RESULTS: A total of 737 patients were included into the cohort. Of

The role of rodents in the ecology of Ixodes ricinus and associated pathogens in Central and Eastern Europe.

Rodents comprise more species than any other mammal order. Most rodents are considered keystone species in their ecological communities, hence the survival of many other species in the ecosystem depend on them. From medical point of view, this is particularly important for rodent-dependent pathogens. In the particular case of tick-borne diseases, rodents are important as hosts for vector ticks and as reservoir hosts (Lyme borreliosis, human granulocytic anaplasmosis, Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever, Tick-borne relapsing fevers, tick-borne rickettsioses, babesiosis). Community and population ec

From Confidence to Coverage: A Multi-Stakeholder Perspective on Vaccination in Central and Eastern Europe.

Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) carries some of the widest immunisation gaps in Europe, and improving coverage there is often treated as a problem of access infrastructure. On 14 May 2026, a multi-stakeholder meeting hosted at the Romanian Parliament brought together around twenty-five speakers, among some fifty participants in all, from Romania, Poland, the Czech Republic, and Bulgaria, together with international contributors, to agree which barriers to vaccine confidence matter most in the region, which interventions are deliverable within 12 to 24 months, and how responsibility for them s

An Epidemiological Analysis of Terrorism-Related Attacks in Eastern Europe from 1970 to 2019.

INTRODUCTION: Over the past five decades, Eastern Europe has seen relatively little in terms of terrorist attacks. The recent escalation of the Russo-Ukrainian conflict has, however, placed a new spotlight on the region, and new questions and concerns around war, conflict, insurgency, and terrorism are being posed. The Russian invasion and extensive combat operations, the largest in Europe since World War II, are occurring across Ukraine where there are 15 active nuclear reactors, not including the Chernobyl site, that are vulnerable to attack or sabotage. In addition, Eastern Europe has been

Malignancies among children and young people with HIV in Western and Eastern Europe and Thailand.

OBJECTIVES: Investigate trends over time and predictors of malignancies among children and young people with HIV. DESIGN: Pooled data from 17 cohorts in 15 countries across Europe and Thailand. METHODS: Individuals diagnosed with HIV and presenting to paediatric care less than 18 years of age were included. Time at risk began at birth for children with documented vertically acquired HIV, and from first HIV-care visit for others. Children were followed until death, loss-to-follow-up, or last visit in paediatric or adult care (where data after transfer to adult care were available). Rates of r

Review of the measles epidemic in children from Central Eastern Europe in the third millennium.

Measles is an extremely contagious viral disease. Even though a safe vaccine exists for this disease, it remains one of the leading causes of mortality and morbidity in infants and young children. We aimed to create a retrospective descriptive study in which to analyze the evolution of the measles epidemic at the European level. The documentation was carried out using European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) and World Health Organization (WHO) statistics. At the same time, we present the epidemic's evolution in Romania, using data provided by the Romanian National Institute of

Health policy-making in central and eastern Europe: lessons from the inaction on injuries?

The burden of disease due to injuries has elicited virtually no public health response in the countries of central and eastern Europe, even though injuries have long been a much greater problem in the east of Europe than in the west, with children especially affected. This paper seeks to identify factors that have inhibited policy development on this topic and to draw lessons for health policy development in this region more generally. Several factors emerge. Deaths from injuries have had low visibility. Data have not been assembled in a way that would facilitate identification of the burden o

Acute health effects of exposure to high levels of air pollution in eastern Europe.

Acute effects of winter-type air pollution characterized by high levels of SO2, moderate levels of particles, and low acidity were studied. A panel of 155 asthmatic children and 102 adults with a history of asthma from the former German Democratic Republic cities of Erfurt and Welmar and from the Czech Republic city of Sokolov participated from September 1990 through June 1992. The panelists recorded daily symptoms, medication intake, and peak expiratory flow (PEF). Statistical analysis was based on linear regression of population-averaged time series controlling for trend, meteorology, and au
