The development of minimally invasive procedures such as the balloon dilation Eustachian tuboplasty (BET) is an alternative to the grommet tympanum membrane. BET is applied in the cases where, after elimination of all factors influencing the ET and middle ear functioning, no sufficient improvement is observed. The aim of this study was to present the therapeutic benefits of the BET method in the treatment of ETD caused by disorders in the middle ear ventilation. The BET procedure was offered to four patients (3 men and 1 woman) after subjective, physical, otorhinolaryngological and audiometric

BACKGROUND: Eustachian tube dysfunction can cause middle ear diseases and impair quality of life. Sufficient diagnostic tools for chronic obstructive eustachian tube dysfunction are lacking and not reliable enough.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The Eustachian Tube Dysfunction Questionnaire (ETDQ-7) was published by McCoul et al. in 2012 as an instrument to evaluate eustachian tube function. They demonstrated the reliability und validity of their questionnaire. The cut-off point for the diagnosis of eustachian tube dysfunction is ≥ 14.5 at 100 % sensitivity and 100 % specificity. We translated the ETD

BACKGROUND: Balloon eustachian tuboplasty (BET) is a minimally invasive surgical treatment that is effective and safe for obstructive eustachian tube dysfunction. However, BET complications include excessive widening of the eustachian tube, causing a patulous eustachian tube (PET). Herein, we report a case of PET following BET in a patient who underwent radiation therapy and reviewed the literature on considerations for reducing complications after BET.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 63-year-old woman complained of bilateral ear fullness after concurrent chemoradiation therapy for nasopharyngeal lympho

OBJECTIVE: To perform a systematic review to determine if a total score of ≥14.5 (mean score ≥ 2.1) on the ETDQ-7 accurately identifies patients with obstructive Eustachian tube dysfunction (OETD) on impedance tympanometry (peak compliance <0.2 mL or middle ear pressure of -100 daPa) or other objective measures of OETD.
METHODS: A systematic review without a meta-analysis was performed of studies in four electronic databases (Pubmed, Embase, Web of Science, and Scopus) that used the ETDQ-7 and at least one objective measure of OETD.
RESULTS: Six-hundred and fifty-two studies were identified

The Eustachian tube is a crucial pneumatic component of the head and neck region and is often neglected as an important site of insidious pathologies. In our literature review, we negotiate the management of eustachian tube dysfunction and explore the various therapeutic and surgical options available at our disposal. We begin by investigating the physiological nature of the eustachian tube and its role in the body's functioning. We also list and elaborate on the various pathologies affecting the Eustachian tube and its associated structures. The review then outlines eustachian tube dysfunctio

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Eustachian tube dysfunction (ETD) presents with symptoms of aural fullness and pressure, muffled hearing, tinnitus, and otalgia. When severe, it can lead to many common ear disorders such as otitis media with effusion, tympanic membrane retraction/perforation, and cholesteatoma. These diseases are prevalent in both the pediatric and adult population and significantly impact quality of life. The pathophysiology of ETD in the absence of an obstructive lesion has long been debated but is thought to be related to functional obstruction (i.e., inefficient tensor veli palatini mus

The Eustachian tube protects against secretion, germs and sound pressure from the nasopharynx, it acts as a drain, and serves pressure equalization in both directions so that the ear drum and sound-conducting apparatus can vibrate optimally. The incidence of Eustachian tube dysfunction in adults is about 1%, in children almost 40%. Symptoms are often unspecific. For diagnosis, the Eustachian tube score (ETS-5) can be used in patients with a perforated ear drum, and the ETS-7 score in patients with intact ear drum. Adenoid hypertrophy is a frequent cause of obstructive tube dysfunction in child

The eustachian tube is a narrow canal which connects the back of the nose with the middle ear cavity. It is made up of a bony component comprising the lateral one third and a cartilaginous component comprising the medial two thirds. The eustachian tube is responsible for three main physiologic functions:①pressure equilibration,②fluid clearance from the middle ear,③protection of the middle ear from pathogens, which help maintain an air filled and fluid free cavity to allow sound transmission.Eustachian tube dysfunction(ETD) is a common middle ear disease which may manifest tympanic membrane atelec

OBJECTIVE: The patulous eustachian tube (ET) seems to be caused by a longitudinal concave defect in the mucosal valve at the superior aspect of its anterolateral wall and causes troublesome autophony of one's own voice and breathing sounds. Patulous ET reconstruction was evaluated to analyze whether submucosal graft implantation to fill in the concavity within the patulous tubal valve may produce lasting relief of symptoms.
STUDY DESIGN: Prospective trial.
SETTING: Tertiary referral center, ambulatory surgery.
PATIENTS: Fourteen ETs in 11 adults with 1 or more years of confirmed continuous

It has been classically hypothesized that a mass in the nasopharynx causes an obstacle to air flow through the eustachian tube, thereby creating a negative pressure in the middle ear followed by an effusion. However, examination of the relevant data concerning the supposed obstruction of the eustachian tube by nasopharyngeal carcinomas, choanal polyps and adenoids does not seem to support this cause and effect relationship. Evidence points to other more sophisticated mechanisms which cause negative pressure and an effusion in pathological middle ear conditions. While the hypothesis of a nasoph

An essential success factor for tympanoplasties is effective aeration of middle ear, lack of tubular permeability being a factor for failure. The anti-inflammatory effect of curietherapy with Iridium 192 introduced into the tube during middle ear surgery was studied in 38 patients. Tubular dysfunction was evaluated by clinical and manometric examinations. During operation, a sealed plastic tube 1.6 mm in diameter was introduced into the Eustachian tube, an Iridium wire inserted on the following day, and a dose of 1.5 and 3 Gy applied to two groups respectively. Tubular function was assessed as

The eustachian tube is an essential part of the pressure regulating system of the middle ear. The physiologic function of the tube is to equalize the middle ear pressure with that of the atmosphere, and at the same time make the middle ear independent of the nasopharyngeal environment with its loud sounds, extensive respiratory pressure changes, and potentially harmful bacterial flora. Thus, the protective closing action is essential in the normal physiology of the eustachian tube, and lack of protection is central in tubal malfunction. We have come to consider eustachian tube closing failure

Mucociliary function of the eustachian tube was measured with a radioisotopic method; 0.01 mL of a human serum albumin labeled with technetium 99m was instilled into the anterior part of the middle ear cavity either through a perforation or by puncturing the tympanic membrane, and its course was followed by a gamma-camera. In the normal eustachian tube, the velocity of the mucociliary transport was 0.7 to 1.1 mm/min. The mucociliary function was totally absent in chronic otitis media, in untreated secretory otitis media, and in the ear with a moist perforation of the tympanic membrane. The muc
