P300 and delay-discounting in obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Previous research showed that dysfunctions of fronto-striatal neural networks are implicated in the pathophysiology of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Accordingly, patients with OCD showed altered performances during decision-making tasks. As P300, evoked by oddball paradigms, is suggested to be related to attentional and cognitive processes and generated in the medial temporal lobe and orbitofrontal and cingulate cortices, it is of special interest in OCD research. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate P300 in OCD and its associations with brain activity during decision-making: P300

Enhancing P300 based character recognition performance using a combination of ensemble classifiers and a fuzzy fusion method.

BACKGROUND: P300-based brain-computer interfaces provide communication pathways without the need for muscle activity by recognizing electrical signals from the brain. The P300 speller is one of the most commonly used BCI applications, as it is very simple and reliable, and it is capable of reaching satisfactory communication performance. However, as with other BCIs, it remains a challenge to improve the P300 speller's performance to increase its practical usability. NEW METHODS: In this study, we propose a novel multi-feature subset fuzzy fusion (MSFF) framework for the P300 speller to recogn

The long and the short of it: influence of interstimulus interval on auditory P300 abnormalities in schizophrenia.

Event-related brain potentials were recorded from 10 patients with DSM-IV schizophrenia (9 men) and 10 healthy control subjects (9 men) during the performance of two auditory oddball tasks, one using a 1.5 second interstimulus interval (ISI), the other using an 8 second ISI. P300 amplitude to target tones (.20 probability) and standard tones (.80 probability) were measured from midline electrodes Fz, Cz, and Pz. Results showed different effects of ISI in the two groups. Controls showed a slight decrease in P300 amplitude to targets but a marked increase in P300 to standards with the increase i

P300 and traffic scenes: the effect of temazepam.

The present research investigated the effects of a minor tranquillizer (temazepam) on P300 in a paradigm that may be relevant for traffic behaviour. Because accident scenes have not been used previously in P300 research, Experiment 1 (n = 8) examined whether the P300 elicited by safe traffic scenes and scenes of imminent road accidents were sensitive to the probability of occurrence. Event-related potentials were recorded from C3, Cz, C4, P3, Pz and P4 within an oddball paradigm. The type of stimulus to which subjects responded (pictures of imminent accidents or safe road scenes) was crossed w

[Cognitive functions and nonspecific brain systems in patients with panic disorders].

Ninety-three patients with panic disorders and 36 healthy controls have been studied using clinico-neurological, psychometric, neuropsychological and neurophysiological (event-related P300 evoked potentials) methods. Patients with typical panic disorders (TPD) featured a higher level of anxiety, depression and cognitive disturbances such as memory and attention impairment as compared to the control group. Patients with atypical panic disorders differ from those with TPD by the lower anxiety level, more pronounced depression and cognitive impairment. Comparing to healthy subjects, there were a

Dissociable Trait Correlates of P300 Variability and Amplitude: Conscientiousness and Disinhibition.

Event-related potentials (ERPs) have been extensively used to link neural processes with personality traits, but most work has focused on mean amplitudes, leaving intraindividual variability in brain response comparatively unexplored. The present study examined whether trial-to-trial variability in the P300 reflects a common latent factor across cognitive tasks, and whether it relates to personality traits in ways that differ from mean amplitude. A mixed student and community sample (N = 206) completed three ERP tasks (oddball, flanker, and doors) yielding nine P300 variants. Confirmatory fact

N2 Responses in Youths With Psychosis Risk Syndrome and Their Association With Clinical Outcomes: A Cohort Follow-Up Study Based on the Three-Stimulus Visual Oddball Paradigm.

OBJECTIVE: Schizophrenia often occurs during youth, and psychosis risk syndrome occurs before the onset of psychosis. The aim of this study was to determine whether the visual event-related potential responses in youths with psychosis risk syndrome were defective in the presence of interference stimuli and associated with their clinical outcomes. METHODS: A total of 223 participants, including 122 patients with psychosis risk syndrome, 50 patients with emotional disorders, and 51 healthy control subjects, were assessed. Baseline EEG was recorded during the three-stimulus visual oddball task.

Abnormal trial-to-trial variability in P300 time-varying directed eeg network of schizophrenia.

Cognitive disturbance in identifying, processing, and responding to salient or novel stimuli are typical attributes of schizophrenia (SCH), and P300 has been proven to serve as a reliable psychosis endophenotype. The instability of neural processing across trials, i.e., trial-to-trial variability (TTV), is getting increasing attention in uncovering how the SCH "noisy" brain organizes during cognition processes. Nevertheless, the TTV in the brain network remains unrevealed, notably how it varies in different task stages. In this study, resorting to the time-varying directed electroencephalogram

You do the math: coding of bets and outcomes in a gambling task in the feedback-related negativity and p300 in healthy adults.

The feedback-related negativity (FRN) is an event-related potential (ERP) component associated with processing of performance feedback, with more negative amplitudes for losses relative to wins. The amplitude of the FRN following near misses, i.e. the experience of coming close to winning, is between the amplitude elicited by losses and wins. In gambling, however, outcome value may not always be obvious since initially placed bets need to be taken into account when evaluating wins or losses. It is still unclear if initial bet size is reflected in the FRN or the later P300 component. The presen

[Event-related EEG and evoked potential investigations in clinical practice].

Considering the limits of the traditional EEG techniques the authors review the main methods and clinical importance of the event-related EEG investigations. According to methods, these can be classified into the spectral analysis of task-related, pre-task and post-task recordings as well as stimulus-controlled measurements based on evoked potential techniques. The main results of clinical studies on the event-related EEG methods are summarized according to chief disease groups (Alzheimer's disease, epilepsy, schizophrenia, Parkinson's disease, dyslexia, depression). The authors discuss the st

Evidence for a differential visual M300 brain response in gamblers.

OBJECTIVE: Gambling disorder is the first behavioral addiction recognized in the DSM-5. This marks the growing realization that both behavioral and substance-related addictions are manifestations of an 'addicted brain', displaying similar altered neurophysiological mechanisms. A decreased electrophysiological visual P300 is considered a hallmark effect of substance-related addictions, but has not yet been shown in behavioral addictions. METHODS: Magnetoencephalographic recordings of 15 gamblers and 17 controls were taken as they performed a cue-reactivity paradigm in which they passively view

Post-task changes in visual P300 and their reversibility through brief hyperventilation.

Long hours of continuous, mental task reportedly increase the average auditory P3 latency of the normal subjects significantly, a change that is thought to be related to mental fatigue. We have tried out several protocols of varying task difficulty and duration in an effort to study the onset of the assumed fatigue-related changes. The present study shows that changes in visual event-related potential occur in less than two minutes if the task is sufficiently rigorous. The changes occur both in latency and in amplitude. Moreover, the changes are reversible with a brief (30 second) period of hy

Correlations between P300 components and regional cerebral blood flows.

To evaluate the diagnostic importance of event-related potential P300, the correlation between P300 and regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) was investigated in various brain regions in patients with multiple cerebral infarction (16 cases), chronic alcoholism (11 cases) and Alzheimer's disease (5 cases) and in seven healthy people. Cognitive function was also evaluated by mini-mental state examination. P300 latency and rCBF was measured by recording of evoked potentials using an oddball paradigm and stable xenon computed tomographic scanning, respectively. A significant (P<0.05) negative correl

The effects of family history, sobriety length, and drinking history in younger alcoholics on P300 auditory-evoked potentials.

Event-related potentials (ERPs) have been shown to be different between alcoholics and non-alcoholics. Of particular interest to investigators has been the P300 wave. Because it has been shown that alcohol-induced neural damage can alter P300 waves, particularly amplitude, we attempted to examine alcoholics who most likely suffered little damage because they drank heavily for relatively few years (mean = 6.9 years). The effects of long-term sobriety (mean = 5.0) were also investigated to determine if cognitive functioning, as measured by auditory-evoked P300 waves, varies with increased abstin

Identification of neural circuits underlying P300 abnormalities in schizophrenia.

Event-related potentials (ERPs) provide a noninvasive method to evaluate neural activation and cognitive processes in schizophrenia. The pathophysiological significance of these findings would be greatly enhanced if scalp-recorded ERP abnormalities could be related to specific neural circuits and/or regions of the brain. Using quantitative approaches in which scalp-recorded ERP components are correlated with underlying neuroanatomy in schizophrenia, we focused on biophysical and statistical procedures (partial least squares) to relate the auditory P300 component to anatomic measures obtained f

Associations between physical activity, sedentary time, and neurocognitive function during adolescence: Evidence from accelerometry and the flanker P300.

Physical activity and sedentary behavior are two lifestyle factors related to overall health during adolescence. Public health efforts emphasize the importance of increasing physical activity to improve physical and mental health outcomes, including neurocognitive functioning. However, the unique effects of sedentary behavior on neurocognitive functioning remain unclear. This study aimed to investigate associations between daily moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA), sedentary time, and neurocognitive functioning during adolescence. Fifty-seven participants (37% female) between the age
