Pattern-reversal visual evoked potentials in infants: gender differences during early visual maturation.

This paper investigates gender differences in the peak latency and amplitude of the P1 component of the pattern-reversal visual evoked potential (pattern-reversal VEP) recorded in healthy term infants. Pattern-reversal VEPs in response to a series of high contrast black and white checks (check widths 120', 60', 30', 24', 12', 6') were recorded in 50 infants (20 males, 30 females) at 50 weeks post-conceptional age (PCA) and in 49 infants (22 males, 27 females) at 66 weeks PCA. Peak latency of the major component, P1, was considerably shorter in female compared with male infants. Differences in

Are flash-evoked visual potentials useful for intraoperative monitoring of visual pathway function?

Flash-evoked visual potentials (VEPs) recorded from the scalp were used in a series of 35 patients with tumors along the visual pathway: 3 orbital tumors, 25 perisellar tumors, 4 intraventricular tumors, and 3 occipital lesions. Preoperatively, various combinations of impaired visual fields and visual acuity were observed in over 90% of the patients. A postoperative decrease in visual function was observed in 3 cases. Of the 25 perisellar lesions, 13 were operated through a standard frontotemporal craniotomy and 12 were operated through a transnasal-transsphenoidal approach. VEPs were highly s

Brainstem Auditory Evoked Potentials and Visual Potentials in Kawasaki Disease: An Observational Monocentric Study.

Background: Kawasaki Disease is a systemic vasculitis, particularly involving coronary arteries. Rare involvement of other vascular districts is described, as central nervous system arteries, leading to a vasculitic neuropathy. Sensorineural hearing loss and alterations of evoked potentials are uncommonly reported complications. Methods: In an observational monocentric study, 59 children (37 males; 22 females; mean age: 2.7 ± 2.2 years) with documented Kawasaki Disease were enrolled. No risk factors for hearing loss and/or neurological impairment were identified in the cohort. Brainstem audito

Visual evoked potentials among Indian patients with optic nerve disorders.

Optic nerve disorders comprise a large part of causes of visual impairments and can be associated with various clinical presentations. Accurate diagnosis and treatment sometimes would be achieved by using advanced techniques in diagnostic approaches such as Visual Evoked Potentials (VEP). This study therefore profiles optic nerve disorders and estimates the role VEP plays in the diagnosis and prognosis of these conditions in a rural tertiary care hospital. Hundred cases diagnosed with optic nerve disorders and 200 controls matched for age and gender were recruited from the Eye OPD. Structured

Visual evoked potentials in patients with congenital color vision deficiency.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Congenital color vision deficiency (CCVD) is an eye disease characterized by abnormalities in the cone cells in the photoreceptor layer. Visual evoked potentials (VEPs) are electrophysiological tests that physiologically examine the optic nerve, other visual pathways, and the visual cortex. The aim of this research was to determine whether there are VEP abnormalities in CCVD patients. METHODS: Patients with CCVD and healthy individuals were included in this prospective case-control study. Participants with eye disease or neurodegenerative disease were excluded from the study.

Visual evoked potentials in neuromyelitis optica and its spectrum disorders.

Optic neuritis (ON) is a key feature of neuromyelitis optica (NMO). Recently, NMO patients of predominantly Afro-Brazilian origin were evaluated by visual evoked potentials (VEPs) and showed marked amplitude reductions. Here, we analyzed VEPs in a predominantly Caucasian cohort, consisting of 43 patients with definite NMO, 18 with anti-aquaporin (AQP) 4 antibody-seropositive NMO spectrum disorders and 61 matched healthy controls. We found reduced amplitudes in only 12.3%, prolonged latencies in 41.9% and a lack of response in 14.0% of NMO eyes. Delayed P100 latencies in eyes without prior ON s

The effect of heme oxygenase inhibition on visual evoked potentials.

This study investigated the effect of heme oxygenase (HO) inhibition on visual evoked potentials (VEPs). HO catalyzes the oxidative degradation of heme. Products of HO reaction are biliverdin, ferrous iron, and carbon monoxide (CO). CO is a signal molecule and is an endogenous modulator in the soluble guanylate cyclase/cyclic guanosine monophosphate signaling pathway. Rats were treated with HO inhibitors tin protoporphyrin IX (SnPP IX) or zinc protoporphyrin IX (ZnPP IX) or HO inducer sodium arsenite (Na-arsenite). Soluble guanylate cyclase is inhibited by 1H-[1,2,3]oxydiazolo[4,3-a]quinoxalin

Pattern-reversal electroretinograms and visual evoked potentials in retinitis pigmentosa.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze pattern electroretinograms (PERGs) and pattern visual evoked potentials (PVEPs) in retinitis pigmentosa (RP) patients. METHODS: PERGs and PVEPs were recorded in 106 eyes of 53 RP patients. A RETIport system was used for stimulation and recording. RESULTS: Reproducible PERGs were found in 17 (32%) of the patients, from only one eye in 4 of the 17 patients. We failed to record a normal PERG in any patient. All 53 patients gave reproducible PVEPs. The patients could be divided into three groups according to the waveform of the response. In the first group (n = 17), all pat

Excitotoxic insults to the optic nerve alter visual evoked potentials.

Excitotoxic oligodendroglial death is one of the mechanisms which has been proposed to underlie demyelinating diseases of the CNS. We describe here functional consequences of excitotoxic lesions to the rabbit optic nerve by studying the visual evoked potentials (VEPs) measured in the visual cortex. Nerves were slowly infused with the excitotoxin kainate a subcutaneously implanted osmotic pump which delivered the toxin through a cannula onto the optic nerve. Records of VEPs were obtained before pump implantation and at 1, 3 and 7 days post-implantation, and weekly evaluated thereafter for up to

[Visual evoked potentials in children with tension headaches and migraine].

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether visual evoked potentials (VEP) change, and to what degree, in different types of headache (migraine with or without aura, or tension headache). PATIENTS AND METHODS: We made a transversal study of 78 children (aged 3-14 years) studied between March 1997 and August 1998, classified into three groups according to HIS diagnostic criteria of 1988 and HIS-R 1997. A VEP of geometric pattern was done using the recording technique recommended by the International Society in their standards for VEP and the reference values were used for an amplitude of less than 5 micro

Effects of bilirubin on visual evoked potentials in term infants.

UNLABELLED: To determine bilirubin-induced neurotoxicity, serial visual evoked potentials (VEPs) of 72 infants with neonatal hyperbilirubinaemia and 22 controls were evaluated and compared in four sessions for 8 weeks after birth. The levels of maximal serum bilirubin were found positively related to the wave latencies of first VEP. Within 8 weeks after birth, the wave latencies were significantly prolonged in infants in the severe and moderate groups than in the controls. The amplitudes of VEPs were apparently lower in severe and moderate groups than in the control group only in the 1st week

Serial visual evoked potentials and outcome in term birth asphyxia.

Birth asphyxia is a major cause of neonatal mortality and morbidity. It remains difficult to predict accurately neurologic outcome among survivors, particularly infants with moderate hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy. Visual evoked potential (VEP) is a reproducible measure of cortical function and reflects acute changes in central nervous system status secondary to asphyxial insult. We performed serial VEPs on 36 term infants with documented birth asphyxia to investigate the relationship between VEPs and neurodevelopmental outcome at 18 months of age. Fourteen infants were neurologically intact

Visual evoked potentials: relation to adult speechreading and cognitive function.

This study investigated the putative relationship between visual evoked potentials (VEPs) and specific aspects of speechreading. The nature and constraints of the relationship between VEPs and cognitive functioning was also examined. The original finding of Shepherd, DeLavergne, Frueh, and Clobridge (1977) that visual-neural speed (VN 130) predicts speechreading skill was not replicated. However, the picture is rather complex in that we find significant correlations for some context-free word discrimination and sign-alphabet testing conditions. These correlations occur only for the VN 130/P 20

[Use of visual evoked potentials in neurology--a review. I].

In 1972, Halliday and co-workers [13] inaugurated the rotary mirror method for producing the visually evoked potential (VEP) by means of pattern reversal. The so-called pattern reversal VEP (PRVEP) is at present frequently obtained by means of a television monitor (TV stimulation) or light-emitting diode system (LED system). Independent of its special advantages and disadvantages, the stimulation by means of these systems as compared to the simple flash stimulation potentials seems to evoke with considerably better reproduceable latency indices, which enables a clearer separation of normal and
