[Association of current and past smoking with metabolic syndrome in men].

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to determine the relationship between past smoking and the risk factors for metabolic syndrome. METHODS: From January 2007 to December 2007, a total of 3,916 over thirty years old male health screen examinees were divided into the nonsmoking, smoking, ex-smoking groups. The diagnosis of metabolic syndrome was based on the criteria of the NCEP ATP (Executive Summary of The Third Report of The National Cholesterol Education Program). Metabolic syndrome was defined as the presence of three or more of the following: a blood pressure > or =130/85 mmHg, a

Fate of ischemic limbs in patients with Buerger's disease based on our 30-year experience: does smoking have a definitive impact on the late loss of limbs?

PURPOSE: We herein review the long-term results of our series of critical ischemic limbs caused by Buerger's disease. METHODS: A retrospective review of 103 patients with critical limb ischemia who were diagnosed with Buerger's disease by Shionoya's criteria between 1980 and 2010. RESULTS: The age of onset was 38.0 ± 9.7 years (mean ± SD). The median follow-up was 97 months. Thirty-three patients had pain at rest, and 65 patients presented with ischemic ulcers in their toes and/or fingers. Gangrene was present in five patients. Sixteen patients achieved remission with medical therapy and smo

The association between cumulative radiation dose and the incidence of severe oral mucositis in head and neck cancers during radiotherapy.

BACKGROUND: Quality of life can be influenced by oral mucositis (OM), and it is necessary to implement OM management strategies before the initiation of radiotherapy (RT) in patients with head and neck cancer (HNC). AIMS: To examine the association between the cumulative radiation dose and the incidence of severe OM in HNC patients receiving RT. METHODS AND RESULTS: A retrospective observational cohort study was conducted in a Showa University Fujigaoka Hospital, in Japan. We retrospectively analyzed 94 patients with HNC who developed OM during RT. We defined OM as a more than grade 2 OM. Th

Current (but not ex) cigarette smoking is associated with worse cognitive performances in schizophrenia: results from the FACE-SZ cohort.

BACKGROUND: Tobacco use is common in subjects with schizophrenia (SZ) and has sometimes been associated with better functioning in short-term studies. Only few studies embrace an extensive examination of tobacco influence on clinical, cognitive and therapeutic characteristics in stabilized SZ outpatients. The objective of the present study was to assess the association between cognitive performances and smoking status in SZ subjects. METHODS: In total, 1233 SZ participants (73.9% men, mean age 31.5) were included and tested with a comprehensive battery. Tobacco status was self-declared (never

Effect of short-term smoking & L-arginine on coronary endothelial function assessed by cardiac magnetic resonance cold pressor testing: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: The effect of smoking on coronary vasomotion has been investigated in the past with various imaging techniques in both short- and long-term smokers. Additionally, coronary vasomotion has been shown to be normalized in long-term smokers by L-Arginine acting as a substrate for NO synthase, revealing the coronary endothelium as the major site of abnormal vasomotor response. Aim of the prospective cohort study was to investigate coronary vasomotion of young healthy short-term smokers via magnetic resonance cold pressor test with and without the administration of L-Arginine and compare

A self-administered questionnaire to measure cigarette withdrawal symptoms: the Cigarette Withdrawal Scale.

Because few tobacco withdrawal scales have been submitted to appropriate validity analyses, we sought to develop and assess the validity of a new, self-administered scale measuring cigarette withdrawal symptoms. We generated the instrument content by conducting a qualitative survey of 404 smokers and ex-smokers. Then we tested 61 items on the Internet in 3,050 smokers and ex-smokers. Subsamples provided comprehensive retest data after 17 days (n = 1218) and smoking status after 41 days (n = 673). The study resulted in a 21-item, six-dimension scale labeled the Cigarette Withdrawal Scale (CWS-2

Airway inflammation and bronchial bacterial colonization in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

RATIONALE: Inflammation is now recognized as an integral part of the pathogenesis of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). In contrast to the sterile airways of normal lungs, bacterial pathogens are often isolated from the airways in stable COPD. This "colonization" of the tracheobronchial tree, currently believed to be innocuous, could serve as an inflammatory stimulus, independent of current tobacco smoke exposure. OBJECTIVE: To test the hypothesis that bacterial colonization is associated with airway inflammation in stable COPD. METHODS: Bronchoscopy with bronchoalveolar lavage (B

Smoking cessation and bronchial epithelial remodelling in COPD: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is associated with bronchial epithelial changes, including squamous cell metaplasia and goblet cell hyperplasia. These features are partially attributed to activation of the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR). Whereas smoking cessation reduces respiratory symptoms and lung function decline in COPD, inflammation persists. We determined epithelial proliferation and composition in bronchial biopsies from current and ex-smokers with COPD, and its relation to duration of smoking cessation. METHODS: 114 COPD patients were studied cross-s

Basement membrane and vascular remodelling in smokers and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about airway remodelling in bronchial biopsies (BB) in smokers and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). We conducted an initial pilot study comparing BB from COPD patients with nonsmoking controls. This pilot study suggested the presence of reticular basement membrane (Rbm) fragmentation and altered vessel distribution in COPD. METHODS: To determine whether Rbm fragmentation and altered vessel distribution in BB were specific for COPD we designed a cross-sectional study and stained BB from 19 current smokers and 14 ex-smokers with mild to moderate COPD and
