Dermatological conditions impact not only an individual's physical body but also their psychological health. Similar to how cutaneous conditions can affect one's psychological health, worsening psychological conditions can exacerbate or even induce dermatological conditions. There are four common psychiatric pathologies typically found in dermatology practices: depressive symptoms, anxiety symptoms, obsessive-compulsive disorder behaviors, and psychosis. Common cutaneous disorders associated with these psychopathological symptoms include, but are not limited to, psoriasis, acne vulgaris, atopi

Manipulation of the skin is ubiquitous in most individuals along a spectrum of extent and severity. Skin picking that results in clinically evident changes or scarring to the skin, hair, and nails or significantly impairs intrapsychic, psychosocial, or occupational function is considered pathological picking. Several psychiatric conditions are associated with skin picking, including obsessive-compulsive disorder, body-focused repetitive behaviors, borderline personality disorder, and depressive disorder. It is also associated with pruritus and other dysesthetic disorders. Although pathologic s

INTRODUCTION: Skin-picking disorder (SPD), defined as a psychocutaneous condition that involves excessive picking at the skin causing marked impairment in quality of life, is commonly seen in both dermatology and psychiatry. As such, therapeutic intervention-both nonpharmacologic and pharmacologic-is essential. Given the rising prevalence of SPD and the tremendous impact it can have on quality of life, an updated review, specifically on pharmacologic options, is very much needed.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this scoping review is to provide a detailed compilation of updated pharmacologic treatments

This article summarizes the current state of research with respect to the new obsessive-compulsive and related disorders (OCRD) grouping according to the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD-11) and the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5). The ICD-11 grouping of OCRD is based on common clinical features, such as repetitive undesired thoughts and repetitive behavior and is supported by the literature and empirical data from the fields of imaging and genetics. The disorders in this grouping in ICD-11 include obsessive-com

Hair pulling disorder (HPD; trichotillomania) and skin picking disorder (SPD; excoriation disorder) are understudied psychiatric disorders. The aim of this study was to examine the prevalence and correlates of HPD and SPD in an acute psychiatric sample. Semistructured interviews and self-report measures were administered to patients in a psychiatric partial hospital (N = 599). The past-month prevalence of HPD and SPD was 2.3% and 9%, respectively. HPD and SPD had highly similar clinical characteristics and a strong co-occurrence. Patients with HPD/SPD were significantly younger than other pati

There is a group of cutaneous disorders for which we have an inadequate understanding of their etiology and which frustrates us as therapists. This includes conditions such as the dynias, neurotic excoriations, postherpetic neuralgia, prurigo nodularis, and others. Herein, we review a recent article in the New Yorker magazine which postulates a new way to look at these puzzling entities.

"Skin picking disorder," also known as "dermatillomania" or "psychogenic excoriation," is classified in the "Obsessive Compulsive and Related Disorders" category in Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition and characterized by repetitive skin picking behaviors resulting in skin lesions. Atomoxetine (ATX) is a selective norepinephrine (noradrenaline) reuptake inhibitor commonly used in the management of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. Atomoxetine is considered to increase levels of noradrenaline and dopamine by inhibiting norepinephrine transporters. In thi

INTRODUCTION: Naltrexone (NTX), a mu-opioid receptor antagonist, has been approved for the treatment of alcoholism and opioid dependence. More recently, however, NTX and a related drug, nalmefene (NMF), have also shown positive results for the treatment of gambling disorders.
AREAS COVERED: In this study, we reviewed the trials testing the effect of opioid antagonists (OA) in gambling disorders and in other broadly defined behavioral addictions, including selected DSM-5 disruptive, impulse-control, and conduct disorders, obsessive-compulsive and related disorders, eating disorders, and other

Prurigo nodularis is a chronic skin disorder that is frequently misdiagnosed. It is characterized by multiple pea-sized nodules that develop on the skin, particularly on the anterior leg and thigh. These lesions are intensely pruritic and frequently become excoriated and infected. The cause of prurigo nodularis is unknown, and treatment is directed at reducing inflammation and controlling symptoms. The condition is typically of long duration and is refractory to treatment.

The skin and psyche are intimately related with various skin diseases caused by or resulting in psychiatric disturbances. Pruritus is a commonly reported symptom in psychiatric patients, and likewise psychiatric co-morbidities, including anxiety and depression, are frequently seen in chronic pruritus patients. Primary psychodermatologic conditions, such as somatic symptom disorder, dermatitis artefacta, obsessive-compulsive and related disorders (excoriation disorder and prurigo nodularis), delusional infestation, and substance use disorder, can all induce significant pruritus in patients, sev

BACKGROUND: While skin picking disorder remains relatively common, it often does not present to psychiatry until significant morbidity or comorbidities are reached. It is described as recurrent picking of skin leading to skin lesions, with repeated attempts to decrease or stop skin picking. It is also often associated with significant distress or functional impairment. There has been limited research in this specific disorder and treatment efficacy has often been poor in severe cases. For various reasons, only a small amount of patients with this disorder present to care, and often to a multid

Dermatophagia is a neurodermatitis akin to onychophagia, onychotillomania, trichotillomania, dermatothlasia, neurotic excoriations, and other conditions in which persons have a neurotic habit or compulsion to self-multilate their skin or its appendages. Dermatophagia is a habit or compulsion, consciously or subconsciously, to bite one's own skin. We believe "dermatophagia" is a more appropriate term for this disorder than the descriptive term "wolf-biter".

Obsessive-compulsive and related disorders (OCRDs), sometimes referred to as obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorders, cause significant impairment and share similar features across several domains, including clinical course, risk factors, and response to treatment. Generally, individuals meeting criteria for one or more OCRDs present with symptoms focused on preoccupations and repetitive behaviors. Sex differences emerge in the clinical presentation of OCRDs, and the associated. Literature emphasizes the importance of considering sex when investigating causal factors, prognosis, and outcomes o

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a complex, multifactorial disorder with onset in either childhood or early adulthood. Lifetime prevalence has been estimated to be around 2%-3%. DSM-5 groups OCD together with closely related disorders-body dysmorphic disorder, trichotillomania (hair-pulling disorder), hoarding disorder, and excoriation disorder (skin-picking disorder)-as obsessive-compulsive and related disorders (OCRDs). In addition, DSM-5 includes a "tic-related" specifier, recognizing that OCD and Tourette syndrome/chronic tics are frequently comorbid. In recent years, the first large

Several diagnoses in the new DSM-5 chapter on 'Obsessive-Compulsive and Related Disorders' directly relate to psychodermatology. The new excoriation (skin-picking) disorder (SPD) and trichotillomania (TTM) both manifest as recurrent body-focused repetitive behaviors that have compulsive and dissociative features, the latter being more prevalent in TTM than SPD. The DSM-5 refers to SPD and TTM occurring without full awareness or preceding tension, however does not specifically mention the possible role of dissociation. This has important treatment implications, as patients with high dissociativ

Trichotillomania (hair pulling disorder) and skin-picking (excoriation) disorder are common neuropsychiatric disorders (each with a point prevalence of around 2%) but are underrecognized by professionals. Affected individuals repeatedly pull out their own hair or pick at their skin, and these symptoms not only have a negative impact on these individuals because of the time they occupy but can also lead to considerable physical disfigurement, with concomitant loss of self-esteem and avoidance of social activities and intimate relationships. The behaviors may also have serious physical consequen

Approximately half of all patients presenting to dermatologists exhibit signs and symptoms of psychiatric conditions that are either primary or secondary to cutaneous disease. Because patients typically resist psychiatric consult, dermatologists often are on the front line in evaluating and treating these patients. Accordingly, distinguishing the specific underlying or resulting psychiatric condition is essential for effective treatment. The etiology, epidemiology, clinical presentation, diagnosis, and first-line treatment of specific primary psychiatric causes of dermatologic conditions, incl

According to current proposals for ICD-11, stereotyped movement disorder will be classified in the grouping of neurodevelopmental disorders, with a qualifier to indicate whether self-injury is present, similar to the classification of stereotypic movement disorder in DSM-5. At the same time, the WHO ICD-11 Working Group on the Classification of Obsessive-Compulsive and Related Disorders has proposed a grouping of body-focused repetitive behavior disorders within the obsessive-compulsive and related disorders (OCRD) cluster to include trichotillomania and skin-picking disorder. DSM-5 has taken
