The authors examined the relationship of major aspects of executive function to acute psychosis and long-term outcome in patients enrolled in a 15-year study of the natural history of psychosis. They evaluated 157 patients, including 42 schizophrenic, 42 other psychotic, and 73 nonpsychotic psychiatric patients 15 years after index hospitalization. Patients were administered the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST) and measures of psychosis and posthospital adjustment. Schizophrenia patients performed significantly worse than both nonschizophrenic psychiatric control groups on WCST indices, rega

Bilingualism has been associated with enhanced executive functions (EFs), particularly attentional control, and may confer protection against cognitive decline in older age. At the same time, the COVID-19 pandemic has emerged as a factor negatively affecting EF in older adults. Bilingualism might offer resilience against these COVID-related cognitive declines, especially in late adulthood, by bolstering cognitive reserve. The present study collected data from 312 community-dwelling individuals spanning the adult lifespan (aged 18 to 80) to address two goals. Goal 1 was to identify a latent str

BACKGROUND: Executive function (EF), a multimodal construct that captures one's control over cognition and behaviour, is associated with academic achievement and social-emotional competence. Prior research suggests that early childhood experiences and the family context shape EF development. Harsh parenting practices-defined through verbal and psychological aggression-and maternal depression are identified as factors that may inhibit early EF development. We examined the relation between these two parenting factors at child age 30 months and two fundamental EF skills, attention and inhibitory

INTRODUCTION: Anticholinergic (AC) medication use is considered a risk factor for cognitive impairment and deterioration in the general population; yet, this has not been examined in Down syndrome (DS), a disorder with high dementia rates.
METHODS: Family members of 108 young adults with DS (18-39 years) reported on their loved one's medication use, executive function, and changes in cognition and behavior using a dementia screener. Medications were coded for their AC potency using the CRIDECO Anticholinergic Load Scale (CALS).
RESULTS: Forty percent of the sample was taking at least one med

This study aimed to compare the executive functions (EFs) of children with decoding, reading comprehension, spelling, and calculation deficits to those of typically developing (TD) children, to delineate specific EF profiles for each group. From an initial sample of 932 children, aged 7-13 years, 93 children with deficits in learning tasks that resemble those of Specific Learning Disorders (signs of Specific Learning Disorders, sSLD) and 28 TD children were studied. EFs were assessed through both performance-based tests and questionnaires completed by parents and teachers, on which ANOVAs, cor

Cognitive flexibility as measured by the Wisconsin Card Sort Task (WCST) has long been associated with frontal lobe function. More recently, this construct has been associated with executive function (EF), which shares overlapping neural correlates. Here, we investigate the relationship between EF, cognitive flexibility, and science achievement in adolescents. This is important because there are fewer educational neuroscience studies of scientific reasoning than of other academically relevant forms of cognition (i.e., mathematical thinking and language understanding). Eighth grade students at

INTRODUCTION: Currently, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) has new criteria that include a diagnostic reference to neurodevelopmental disorders. Neurodevelopmental disorders are diverse, and even though they are independent diagnostic entities they share common manifestations in people with brain damage or dysfunction of the prefrontal cortex; that is, neurodevelopmental disorders present different alterations in executive functions.
DEVELOPMENT: The aim of the present study was to offer an overview of the recent findings on executive functioning in children, a

The aim of the present study was to assess executive function in patients with multiple system atrophy (MSA) and Parkinson's disease (PD) looking for specific differences and considering motor disability and disease duration. Performance of 11 MSA patients was compared to that of 12 healthy controls and two groups of 12 PD patients, one matched with respect to the severity of motor symptoms and the other with respect to disease duration. Compared to healthy controls, MSA and PD patients both presented executive dysfunction but, in MSA, the impairment was more severe and diffuse. This study sug

Both prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) and adolescent alcohol exposure (AAE) persistently impair executive function in humans and animal models. Executive function encompasses multiple interrelated domains including working memory, inhibitory control, and behavioral flexibility. We hypothesized that a developmental "double hit" of PAE and AAE would produce more severe behavioral deficits associated with these executive domains compared to alcohol-naïve and single-exposed animals. We tested this hypothesis in rats by assessing disinhibition (low-light elevated plus maze; LL-EPM), behavioral flexi

OBJECTIVE: Standing postural instability is associated with age-related functional decline and risk of fall. This study investigated the ability to control posture during stationary standing in young adults, older adults, and at-risk older adults from the perspective of postural sway and cumulative lower limb angles.
METHODS: The participants were instructed to assume a stationary upright position in three conditions: unstable, stable, and unstable with executive function tasks. Postural control was quantitatively assessed using a center-of-gravity sway meter and angular velocity sensors.

PURPOSE: Comprehension of syntactic language is facilitated by the executive function of Prefrontal Synthesis (PFS), defined as an ability to deliberately modify and juxtapose mental visuospatial objects. Autistic individuals often experience deficits in PFS. This study aimed to differentiate between two hypotheses regarding PFS acquisition. The first suggests a persistent, age-independent barrier that continuously hinders PFS development. The second proposes an age-dependent factor, such as a critical period for PFS acquisition. These hypotheses predict distinct learning trajectories: the fir

Homelessness is associated with multiple risk factors for neurocognitive impairment. Past research with people experiencing homelessness has described "frontal lobe" dysfunction including behavioral disorders and executive cognitive impairments. In the current study, 72 adults experiencing homelessness were assessed with a standardized assessment of executive function, and interviewed regarding neurological and psychiatric history. When compared to a control sample of 25 never-homeless participants, and controlling for level of education, there was little evidence for executive dysfunction in

In this Monograph, we explored neurocognitive predictors of executive function (EF) development in a cohort of children followed longitudinally from 30 to 54 months of age. We tested predictions of a dynamic field model that explains development in a benchmark measure of EF development, the dimensional change card sort (DCCS) task. This is a rule-use task that measures children's ability to switch between sorting cards by shape or color rules. A key developmental mechanism in the model is that dimensional label learning drives EF development. Data collection began in February 2019 and was comp

Cognitive impairments affect functional capacity in individuals with schizophrenia (SZH), but their neural basis remains unclear. The Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST), and the Stroop Task (SCWT), are paradigmatic tests which have been used extensively for examining executive function in SZH. However, few studies have explored how deficits on these tasks link to brain volume differences commonly seen in SZH. Here, for the first time, we tested associations between FreeSurfer-derived frontal brain volumes and performance on both WCST and SCWT, in a well-matched sample of 57 SZH and 32 control

Cognitive impairment and sexual dysfunction are common symptoms in persons with Multiple Sclerosis (MS). The present study focuses on the relationship between these two dimensions by means of a specific assessment commonly used in clinical practice with this population. Fifty-five persons with a diagnosis of MS underwent specific cognitive tests and answered clinical questionnaires. Two cognitive tests, one for memory (the Selective Reminding Test), and one for attention (the Symbol Digit Modalities Test), were administered together with two tests for executive functions (the D-KEFS Sorting Te
