[Pulmonary function and exercise tolerance in patients treated with bone marrow transplantation (BMT)].

We assessed pulmonary function and exercise tolerance in 10 BMT patients. Their underlying disorders were as follows; chronic myeloid leukemia 5 cases, acute lymphoblastic leukemia 2 cases, aplastic anemia, acute myeloid leukemia and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma one case each. Their mean age was 26 +/- 9 years old. When the patients were healthy and free of serious complications and anemia, arterial blood gas examination, pulmonary function tests and incremental treadmill exercise test were examined repeatedly. Although %VC and FEV1.0% kept within normal range, PaO2 at rest, %DLCO, VO2max, VO2max/kg

[The relationship between preoperative status and postoperative exercise tolerance after mitral valve replacement].

Treadmill exercise test was performed for the evaluation of exercise tolerance after mitral valve replacement. The duration of maximum exercise tolerance in TR free group had no significant difference as compared with TR combined group. Preoperative RV function in TR combined group was kept relatively good as shown in cardiac index, pulmonary arterial and right atrial pressure. As hemodynamics was improved by TAP (TVR), it may not occur the difference in exercise tolerance between the groups. The duration of maximum exercise tolerance with MS group showed shorter tolerance than that of MR grou

Exercise tolerance test. Single-sample screening technique to rule out growth-hormone deficiency.

Parent-directed vigorous exercise was evaluated as a screening test for adequacy of pituitary growth-hormone release in 57 short-statured children. This method obviated the need for pharmacologic provocative testing in all but the four children with growth-hormone deficiency. In 92% of the euendocrine children, the immediate postexercise venous sample demonstrated an adequate growth-hormone level. Vigorous physical exercise after an 8- to 12- hour fast with a single postexercise serum growth-hormone sample is a reliable, safe, and cost-effective screening test for growth-hormone deficiency.

Adolescent exercise capacity predicts higher exercise tolerance later in life when compounded by anaemia in patients with pulmonary arteriovenous malformations.

Exercise tolerance predicts survival and mental health. To test benefits during adolescence for patients with pulmonary arteriovenous malformations (PAVMs) that cause hypoxaemia, we examined current and retrospective exercise tolerance aged 12 years and 19 years, linking to clinical records. In the 85 patients (65 female, mean age 56 years), current metabolic equivalents (METs) ranged from 1.75 to 14.8 (mean 7.85) kcal/kg/min. Oxygen saturation explained only 2.2% of the variability. There were stronger associations between current exercise tolerance and anaemia indices, particularly the need

The longitudinal decrease in exercise tolerance and disease progression in mild-to-moderate COPD.

INTRODUCTION: Exercise intolerance serves as a prognostic marker for poor respiratory outcomes in mild-to-moderate COPD. However, the longitudinal change in exercise tolerance and its association with disease progression remains unknown. We aimed to explore the association of longitudinal change in exercise tolerance with disease progression in mild-to-moderate COPD. METHODS: This community-based, prospective cohort study was conducted in China from 2019 to 2024. The participants completed baseline questionnaires, spirometry, chest computed tomography, and cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CP

Effects of dihydrocodeine on chemosensitivity and exercise tolerance in patients with chronic heart failure.

OBJECTIVES: We sought to test the hypothesis that suppression of chemosensitivity (respiratory response to arterial blood gases) with dihydrocodeine may improve dyspnea and exercise tolerance in patients with chronic heart failure. BACKGROUND: Exertional dyspnea is a common limiting symptom in patients with chronic heart failure. The mechanisms underlying this symptom are not fully understood but may be related to increased ventilation caused, in part, by the augmentation of chemosensitivity. Suppression of chemosensitivity with mild opiates may thus improve this symptom as well as exercise t

The effect of three test meals on exercise tolerance of an individual with McArdle's disease.

This study examined the effect of three test meals on exercise tolerance of an individual with McArdle's disease, a myopathy characterized by phosphorylase b deficiency. The subject's exercise tolerance and ability to achieve the second wind, in response to each test meal, was evaluated over a 16-week period using a bicycle ergometer in a double-blind situation. Data were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance. No significant differences were found. It was concluded that a high protein meal, a high polyunsaturated fat meal, and a meal containing MCT oil did not affect the exercise toleran

[Exercise tolerance in evaluating the efficacy of continuous electrocardiostimulation in patients with atrioventricular block].

Fifty-three patients with brady-cardia were examined prior to and 1 year after the implantation of the cardiostimulator. It was found that the bicycle ergometric test was not contraindicated in examining the function of the respiration and circulation in patients with stable forms of bradyarrhythmia. Three types of the body's response to exercise were identified. It was shown that in patients with the third type of response the compensatory possibilities of the respiratory and cardiovascular systems were at the breaking point. The authors believe that electrocardiostimulation in them is of a d

Effect of doxycycline and atorvastatin on improving exercise tolerance in patients with angina pectoris.

The therapeutic effect of statins on the stabilization of atherosclerotic plaques has been affirmed. In recent years, the inhibition of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPS) of tetracycline drug doxycycline has attracted more and more attention. In this paper, we observed the effect of atorvastatin and doxycycline on exercise tolerance in patients with stable angina pectoris. The results showed that there was no significant difference in the clinical efficacy of the two groups and the effect on the exercise tolerance (P<0.05). There were 4 cases of mild gastrointestinal reaction in the doxycycline

Spectrum of exercise intolerance in 45 patients with Ebstein's anomaly and observations on exercise tolerance in 11 patients after surgical repair.

To determine the effects of definitive operation for Ebstein's anomaly on rest and exercise cardiorespiratory function, cycle exercise studies were performed on 38 patients with Ebstein's anomaly before definitive operation and on 11 patients after operation. An atrial septal defect was present in 29 of the 38 preoperative patients and in none of the postoperative patients. Seven of the postoperative patients had tricuspid valvuloplasty and four had valve replacement. Exercise tolerance, as defined by maximal oxygen uptake, was significantly greater in patients after operation for Ebstein's an

Inter-effort hypoxia recovery during high-intensity intermittent exercise enhances oxygen uptake at the onset of efforts while maintaining exercise tolerance.

Exercise training in hypoxia enhances physiological adaptations improving exercise performance. However, acute hypoxia generally reduces high-intensity exercise tolerance, limiting its application in sports training. Here, we investigated whether oxygen consumption and exercise tolerance are affected during a session of an emerging high-intensity intermittent training (HIIT) model in hypoxia. This model involves efforts in normoxia with inter-effort hypoxia (IEH) recoveries. Young active males were recruited and completed a graded exercise test in normoxia, followed by HIIT sessions under thre

A century of exercise physiology: concepts that ignited the study of human thermoregulation. Part 3: Heat and cold tolerance during exercise.

In this third installment of our four-part historical series, we evaluate contributions that shaped our understanding of heat and cold stress during occupational and athletic pursuits. Our first topic concerns how we tolerate, and sometimes fail to tolerate, exercise-heat stress. By 1900, physical activity with clothing- and climate-induced evaporative impediments led to an extraordinarily high incidence of heat stroke within the military. Fortunately, deep-body temperatures > 40 °C were not always fatal. Thirty years later, water immersion and patient treatments mimicking sweat evaporation we

Effect of Corwin (ICI 118587) on resting and exercise heart rate and exercise tolerance in digitalised patients with chronic atrial fibrillation.

The effect of Corwin, a new oral beta, partial agonist, on the ventricular response to atrial fibrillation was studied in digitalised patients during 24 hour ambulatory electrocardiography and during exercise on a treadmill in a double blind placebo controlled crossover trial. Corwin reduced the maximum heart rate during exercise from 162(16) beats/min to 120(9) beats/min and reduced the peak heart rate during ambulatory electrocardiography from 113(11) to 90(6) beats/min consistent with a beta adrenoreceptor antagonist action at higher levels of sympathetic nervous system activity. Strong Adherence to Cardiac Rehabilitation Program Improves Exercise Tolerance in Outpatients With Cardiovascular Disease.

BACKGROUND: Exercise-based cardiac rehabilitation (CR) programs are recommended in outpatients at least three times a week, but high-frequency visits can be difficult due to patients' work schedules. The association between the frequency of exercise-based CR and the increase in exercise tolerance is not well known. We evaluated the effect of CR once a week or more for improving exercise tolerance. METHODS: This is a retrospective observational study. From February 2011 to January 2020, 110 outpatients who participated in CR and performed a cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET) two times (initi

Gastrointestinal tolerance to a standardized milk-based hydration strategy is similar across exercise modalities.

BACKGROUND: Gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms are frequently reported during endurance exercise, and running is often assumed to provoke greater GI discomfort than cycling due to higher mechanical impact. However, most supporting evidence derives from field studies with limited control of exercise intensity, hydration volume, and beverage composition, making it difficult to isolate the independent effect of exercise modality. This study aimed to compare GI symptom burden and beverage palatability between treadmill running and stationary cycling under controlled conditions. METHODS: In a randomiz
