Adverse reactions to food can be identified as underlying causes in various urticarial diseases. Genuine IgE-dependent allergic reactions to food are known to play a role in acute urticaria (especially in young children), in some cases of exercise-induced urticaria, and in contact urticaria. Intolerance reactions to certain foods (pseudoallergens) are recognized causes of chronic urticaria. A thorough and detailed history, keeping a urticaria diary, quantification of specific serum IgE, and skin tests as well as elimination and provocation tests can help to identify food allergy or intolerance

UNLABELLED: Described for the first time approximately 30 years ago, exercise-induced anaphylaxis is a rare disorder characterized by development of a severe allergic response occurring after mild-to-strenuous physical activity. This disorder is especially important to recognize with the recent increase in physical activity and health fitness fads. A number of predisposing factors (eg, prior ingestion of particular food groups) linked to exercise-induced anaphylaxis has been outlined over the years. Mechanisms governing the condition are still being unveiled, and it is likely that one mechanis

Food-dependent exercise-induced anaphylaxis (FEIAn) is a rare disease. The disease is classified into physical allergy and/or a subtype of food allergy. However, the pathophysiology and epidemiology are not well known. In this article we presented our studies of the epidemiology of FEIAn, in school students (elementary. junior-high, and high school) in Yokohama City and/or Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan. Also, we reviewed FEIAn cases in the literatures in Japan as well as in foreign countries. Six hundred and seven school nurses responded the questionnaire, 30 (Male:Female, 24:6) cases of FEIAn an

BACKGROUND: Sensitization to wheat by ingestion can lead to food allergy symptoms and wheat-dependent, exercise-induced anaphylaxis. Sensitization by inhalation causes bakers' asthma and rhinitis. Wheat allergens have been characterized at the molecular level in bakers' asthma and in wheat-dependent, exercise-induced anaphylaxis, in which omega-5 gliadin (Tri a 19) is a major allergen. However, little information is available regarding allergens responsible for hypersensitivity reactions to ingested wheat in children.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to examine whether children with aller

Food allergy is defined as "a phenomenon in which adverse reactions (symptoms in skin, mucosal, digestive, respiratory systems, and anaphylactic reactions) are caused in living body through immunological mechanisms after intake of causative food." Various symptoms of food allergy occur in many organs. Food allergy falls into four general clinical types; 1) neonatal and infantile gastrointestinal allergy, 2) infantile atopic dermatitis associated with food allergy, 3) immediate symptoms (urticaria, anaphylaxis, etc.), and 4) food-dependent exercise-induced anaphylaxis and oral allergy syndrome

Triticum aestivum (bread wheat) is the most widely grown crop worldwide. In genetically predisposed individuals, wheat can cause specific immune responses. A food allergy to wheat is characterized by T helper type 2 activation which can result in immunoglobulin E (IgE) and non-IgE mediated reactions. IgE mediated reactions are immediate, are characterized by the presence of wheat-specific IgE antibodies, and can be life-threatening. Non-IgE mediated reactions are characterized by chronic eosinophilic and lymphocytic infiltration of the gastrointestinal tract. IgE mediated responses to wheat ca

Food-induced anaphylaxis (FIA) is a life-threatening allergic reaction, while wheat-dependent exercise-induced anaphylaxis (WDEIA) is triggered by wheat ingestion plus cofactors. To elucidate their differences, we profiled serum extracellular vesicle (EV) proteomes from 240 participants, including WDEIA, FIA, oral allergy syndrome (OAS), and healthy controls. All blood samples were obtained at least one month after the most recent acute allergic reaction, using TMT-based LC-MS/MS with ELISA validation. A total of 583 EV proteins were confidently identified, revealing distinct immune features.

CONCLUSIONS: Surgery is an effective treatment in severe cases of supraglottic exercise-induced laryngeal obstruction (E-ILO). Conservatively treated subjects and subjects tested negative for E-ILO, who still experience breathing problems 1-3 years after diagnosis, tend to adjust their physical activity to a greater extent than surgically treated subjects.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate how symptoms and level of physical activity change over time in patients with E-ILO who have undergone surgery, patients with E-ILO treated conservatively and patients who tested negative for laryngeal obstruction

IgE-mediated wheat allergy can take on various forms, including childhood food allergy to wheat, wheat-dependent exercise-induced anaphylaxis in young adults, baker's respiratory allergy/asthma in workers exposed to wheat flour inhalation, and contact urticaria that is caused by hydrolyzed wheat proteins in some cosmetics, and that is sometimes associated with a food allergy. Singleplex and multiplex immunoassays detect specific IgE antibodies to wheat allergenic molecular biomarkers such as omega-5 gliadin Tri a 19, lipid transfer protein Tri a 14, and alpha-amylase inhibitors. Wheat and buckwheat allergies are common food allergies that significantly impact patients' quality of life and health. Wheat allergy encompasses various forms, including wheat food allergy, exercise-induced allergic reactions (WDEIA), baker's occupational asthma/allergy, and contact urticaria. IgE-mediated allergic reactions involve sensitization to stable wheat allergens such as ω-5 gliadin and gluten. Although buckwheat allergy is less common, it is gaining attention in certain regions. Allergen component diagnostic technologies, by detecting specific allergen components [e.g., ω-5 gliadin,

Professional singers and other serious voice users are particularly susceptible to alterations in their vocal apparatus. As the support for vocalization, lung function is an essential element of the production of speech and song. Patients have been described who presented with voice complaints along with minimal or no abnormalities on spirometry, but responded to conventional bronchodilator and other asthma therapy. It was proposed that this represented an exercise-induced asthmalike condition, brought on by the hyperventilation associated with performing. The objective of this study was to es

Food-dependent exercise induced anaphylaxis (FDEIA) is a distinct form of food allergy induced by physical exercise. Symptoms are typically generalized urticaria and severe allergic reactions such as shock or hypotension. Whereas various food items are responsible for the development of FDEIA, wheat is reported to be the allergen with the highest frequency in Japan. Recently aspirin has been known to be an additional exacerbating factor. Skin tests and in vitro serum food-specific IgE assays are currently used, however their sensitivity and specificity are not always satisfactory. A challenge

Gluten-related disorders are very common in pediatric patients. Wheat allergy is triggered by an immunoglobulin E (IgE)-dependent mechanism; its prevalence varies according to the age and region, and in Europe has been estimated to be lower than 1%. Many studies investigated the potential role of several external factors that can influence the risk to developing wheat allergy, but results are still inconclusive. It can be responsible for several clinical manifestations depending on the route of allergen exposure: food-dependent exercise-induced anaphylaxis (FDEIA), occupational rhinitis or ast

Among early-life environmental factors, parental smoking (ETS) has been associated with adverse respiratory outcomes in children. The aim of the study was to evaluate whether parental smoking might lead to asthma and allergies taking into account family history of asthma, personal atopy, breast feeding as confounders and owing pets and day-care during the first 6 months of life as modifiers. About 9000 children of fourth and fifth grade were selected in six cities of France. About 7798 answered an epidemiological questionnaire, underwent a medical examination including skin prick test positivi

BACKGROUND: Food-dependent exercise-induced anaphylaxis (FDEIA) is a serious food allergy in which anaphylaxis develops when exercise is performed within several hours after food intake. The precise mechanism underlying allergic sensitization in FDEIA has been an important issue but remains poorly understood.
OBJECTIVES: We aimed to elucidate the pathomechanism including the route of allergen sensitization involved in FDEIA.
METHODS: A Japanese family with wheat-dependent exercise-induced anaphylaxis (WDEIA), a specific form of FDEIA, were clinically examined. Mutation analysis of the gene e

Anaphylaxis is the most severe of allergic reactions. The most frequent triggers of anaphylaxis in childhood are food, insect venom, drugs, exercise, etc. In some cases, the presence of more than one trigger is necessary for the allergic reaction, while one trigger alone is tolerated. This rare condition is called summation anaphylaxis (SA). Food-dependent exercise-induced anaphylaxis is the most well-known SA. However, SA may also occur with the association between food and/or exercise plus one or more of the following other cofactors, such as drugs, especially non-steroidal anti-inflammatory

Wheat-dependent exercise-induced anaphylaxis (WDEIA) is increasing. In vitro test such as omega-5-gliadin levels are useful in the diagnosis, while oral single blind challenge tests (OCT) with wheat plus exercise continuous being the gold standard diagnostic method. This paper reports the case of a 38-year-old woman, with several episodes of anaphylaxis after eating different foods and doing exercise after ingestion. An allergy study was performed with positive skin prick tests for wheat, barley and rye. Total IgE 238.0KU/L, positive specific IgE (>100KU/L) to wheat, barley and rye, and negati

The syndrome of immediate type I food hypersensitivity, mediated by tissue-bound IgE antibody and mast cell histamine release, is well recorded in the medical literature. This case study represents a previously undescribed late food hypersensitivity, induced only by strenuous exercise. Identification of this new syndrome illustrates classical epidemiologic analysis, improves medical advice for the allergic and athletically inclined, and raises new questions in the areas of allergy and immunology.
