A Rigid-Flexible Coupled Lower Limb Exoskeleton for Enhancing Load-Bearing Ambulation.

Lower limb exoskeletons significantly enhance human functionality. However, simultaneously improving the load capacity of these devices while reducing metabolic costs presents a major challenge in the industry. This paper presents a lower limb exoskeleton that integrates both rigid and flexible structures to facilitate active assistance and passive load transfer at the hip joint. The load transfer experiments were conducted with weights of 10 kg and 15 kg. During static standing, the load transfer rates were recorded at 90.48% and 69.70%, respectively. In dynamic walking, these rates decreased

Enhanced gastrocnemius-mimicking lower limb powered exoskeleton robot.

BACKGROUND: Lower limb muscle bionic devices have attracted significant attention in rehabilitation and assistive sports technology. Despite advancements in mimicking human movement, current devices still face challenges in enhancing strength and movement capabilities. These devices often focus on monoarticular muscles, overlooking the synergistic effects of biarticular muscles and their role in energy transfer, which limits the overall improvement in movement performance. METHODS: This study presents an enhanced gastrocnemius-mimicking exoskeleton robot (EGME), leveraging the biarticular cha

Quantitative assessment of human-exoskeleton integration through a neurophysiological marker of embodiment.

Assistive exoskeletons are increasingly used in rehabilitation settings, yet their adoption in real-world scenarios remains limited. This is partly due to the insufficient understanding of human-device interaction mechanisms. The process through which the central nervous system integrates external devices is known as "tool embodiment" and is primarily assessed through subjective questionnaires. This protocol aims to identify a quantitative marker of embodiment by leveraging the phenomenon of sensory attenuation, i.e., the modulation of sensory stimulation intensity perception as a function of

Design of a Rope-Driven Finger Exoskeleton System with a Universal Double Grooved Roller for Adaptive Rehabilitation.

Impaired hand function caused by neurological conditions, such as stroke, severely limits individuals' ability to perform daily tasks, highlighting the importance of accessible rehabilitation devices. Although the double grooved roller design in existing rope-driven exoskeletons reduces weight and enhances compactness, the different amount of change in the upper and lower traction cords when the fingers are flexed and torsioned can easily lead to slack and slippage of the traction cords, which affects the accuracy of movement. To address these limitations, a rope-driven exoskeleton system with

Bilateral hip exoskeleton assistance enables faster walking in individuals with chronic stroke-related gait impairments.

Millions of individuals surviving a stroke have lifelong gait impairments that reduce their personal independence and quality of life. Reduced walking speed is one of the major problems limiting community mobility and reintegration. Previous studies have shown positive effect of robot-assisted gait training utilizing hip exoskeletons for individuals with gait impairments due to a stroke, leading to increased walking speed in post-treatment compared to pre-treatment assessments. However, no evidence emerged of a significant increasing in walking speed attributable to device usage compared to wa

Online Adaptation Framework Enables Personalization of Exoskeleton Assistance During Locomotion in Patients Affected by Stroke.

Robotic exoskeletons can transform mobility for individuals with lower-limb disabilities. However, their widespread adoption is limited by controller degradation caused by varying gait dynamics across different users and environments. Here, we propose an online adaptation framework that leverages real-time data streams to continuously update the user state estimator model. This approach allows the exoskeleton to learn the user-specific gait patterns, effectively customizing the model for each new user. Additionally, we demonstrate a sensor signal transformation technique that enables model tra

Patient and clinician perceptions, expectations, and usability of ankle exoskeletons for daily living: a mixed-methods survey study.

Ankle exoskeletons offer promising support for individuals with chronic foot drop, yet user and clinician perspectives on their use in daily living remain underexplored. Related studies on lower limb exoskeletons have typically assessed user perceptions following direct physical interaction with devices, which may influence feedback and its interpretation. In contrast, this study aimed to assess perceptions, expectations, and usability through a convergent mixed-methods approach involving 43 participants (i.e., 27 patients diagnosed with foot drop and 16 clinicians), without requiring hands-on

Fatigue assessment for back-support exoskeletons during repetitive lifting tasks.

Fatigue is a major cause of low back pain for workers in various fields, including industry and agriculture. It has a negative impact on workers' safety, decreases their productivity, and causes a reduction in their occupational career. An exoskeleton is expected to be a solution for reducing workers' fatigue. However, assessing the safety and effectiveness of exoskeletons, except for the direct measurement of electromyography (EMG) in the human body, is challenging in real-case scenarios. Recently, simulations have been widely used to estimate biomechanical variables. Thus, we aimed to develo

Hybrid FES-exoskeleton control: Using MPC to distribute actuation for elbow and wrist movements.

INTRODUCTION: Individuals who have suffered a cervical spinal cord injury prioritize the recovery of upper limb function for completing activities of daily living. Hybrid FES-exoskeleton systems have the potential to assist this population by providing a portable, powered, and wearable device; however, realization of this combination of technologies has been challenging. In particular, it has been difficult to show generalizability across motions, and to define optimal distribution of actuation, given the complex nature of the combined dynamic system. METHODS: In this paper, we present a hybr

Metabolic adaptation and related biomechanics in an ankle-based exoskeleton system during six sessions of steady state walking.

Ankle-based exoskeletons have demonstrated metabolic benefits during steady-state walking; however, variability exists in individual adaptation timelines necessary to achieve those benefits. This study assessed timelines for metabolic and gait-related adaptation while wearing an ankle-based exoskeleton while powered (EXOP) compared to unpowered (EXNP) and no device worn (NOEX). Metabolic (VO2) and biomechanics data were collected while 14 participants walked on a treadmill at 1.3 m/s for six sessions. To better understand variability in responses to wearing exoskeletons, the cohort was divided

Methodological framework for a user-centered, structured, and digitized training program for exoskeleton pilots in CYBATHLON preparation.

PURPOSE: Successful participation in the CYBATHLON depends not only on technical innovation but also on effective, systematic training of pilots with spinal cord injury. Current research primarily focuses on clinical rehabilitation, while standardized, task-specific training protocols for applied competition settings are lacking. To address this gap, this methodology paper presents a scientifically grounded training concept for exoskeletons, focusing on the qualification of trainers as key facilitators who adapt exercises and mediate between human and machine. RESULTS: A modular 12-week traini

Actuation Timing Perception of a Powered Ankle Exoskeleton and Its Associated Ankle Angle Changes During Walking.

Robotic ankle exoskeletons have the potential to extend human ability, and actuation timing serves as one of the critical parameters in its controller design. While many experiments have investigated the optimal actuation timing values to achieve different objective functions (e.g. minimizing metabolic cost), studies on users' perception of control parameters are gaining interest as it gives information on people's comfort, coordination, and trust in using devices, as well as providing foundations on how the sensorimotor system detects the exoskeleton behavior changes. The purpose of this stud

The Development and Preliminary Test of a Powered Alternately Walking Exoskeleton With the Wheeled Foot for Paraplegic Patients.

Upright walking has both physical and social meanings for paraplegic patients. The main purpose of this paper is to reduce the automatic functioning of the powered exoskeleton and enable the user to fully control the walking procedure in real-time, aiming to further improve the engagement of the patient during rehabilitation training. For this prototype, a custom-made hub motor was placed at the bottom of the exoskeleton's foot, and a pair of crutches with the embedded wireless controller were utilized as the auxiliary device. The user could alternatively press the button of the crutch to cont
