Journal of clinical child and adolescent psychology : the official journal for the Society of Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology, American Psychological Association, Division 532015eng
The current study examined expressed emotion (EE) among families of adolescents with anorexia nervosa (AN) participating in a treatment study. EE ratings were made from 110 adolescents toward their parents and from parents toward their children using videotaped family interviews. Participants were 92% female and 75% Caucasian with a mean age of 14.41 years. Four family profiles were created (low patient EE/low parent EE, high patient EE/high parent EE, low patient EE/high parent EE, high patient EE/low parent EE). Family EE profile was not related to full remission at end of treatment. Groups

BACKGROUND: Expressed emotion (EE) is a concept reflecting the emotional atmosphere of the home environment. Specific components of EE, namely criticism, hostility and emotional over-involvement, have been found to be important predictors of relapse for schizophrenic patients. The main aim of this study was to examine the predictive power of patient and caregiver characteristics and caregivers' perceptions of frequency, coping, distress/discomfort, control of symptom behaviours by the patient, and attributions on locus of causality for the development of the illness on two components of EE (cr

Expressed Emotion (EE), a measure of the emotional climate of the family, predicts subsequent adjustment of adults with mental disorder (Leff & Vaughn, 1985). Despite the acknowledged importance of the family in childhood disorders, there have been relatively few studies of expressed emotion with adolescents and school-aged children and virtually none focused on preschoolers. The present study utilized the Five Minute Speech Sample (FMSS) to examine how Expressed Emotion relates concurrently and longitudinally to child problem status in a community sample of 112 preschool-aged children. OBJECTIVE: The aims of this study were to determine the value of families' expressed emotion and patients' perception of family criticism in predicting relapse in Egyptian depressed patients and to evaluate transcultural differences in assessment of these measures.
METHOD: The subjects were 32 consecutive depressed patients from psychiatric clinics in Cairo and Ismailia, Egypt, who fulfilled the DSM-III-R criteria for major depression or bipolar disorder. An Arabic version of the Camberwell Family Interview was administered to key relatives of the depressed patients. Rating of expressed emoti

BACKGROUND: A population of adult schizophrenic patients was assessed to discover how the patients viewed their childhood, whether their view differed from non-schizophrenic adults, and to determine any association between parental rearing practices as perceived by the patient, childhood personality as perceived by the mother, and current symptoms. Type and level of expressed emotion shown by parents towards patients was also examined.
METHOD: Parental attitudes, as perceived by 50 schizophrenic patients, were assessed by the EMBU scale. Patients' premorbid personality and social adjustment w

The influence of the quality of care that patients receive during the course of their illness has been the subject of special scrutiny in the area of mental health. The concept of "expressed emotion" (EE) evolved in an effort to understand the impact of family and social environment on the vulnerability to relapse of schizophrenic patients. A semistructured interview, the Camberwell Family Interview, was developed to assess expressed emotion. This article examines the historical context, generalizability, methodological strengths and limitations of the construct of EE and the Camberwell Family

Our study of the emotional atmosphere of the homes of schizophrenic patients in southern California has replicated British findings concerning the influence of the family environment on the course of schizophrenia. As in the British studies, criticism and overinvolvement expressed by a key relative about the patient at the time of the key admission proved to be the best single predictor of symptomatic relapse in the nine months after discharge from the hospital. Replicating the British results, the association between relatives' expressed emotion and relapse was independent of all other variab

A history of life events in the three months before onset of illness was taken in a group of schizophrenic and a group of depressed neurotic in-patients. The Expressed Emotion (EE) of the patients' key relatives was measured. There was no difference between the schizophrenic and depressed patients in the rate of events in the three month period before onset or in the proportion of undesirable events. However, the two groups exhibited significantly different patterns of interaction between life events and relatives' EE. Schizophrenic patients living with high EE relatives had a low rate of life

High expressed emotion (EE) is common in caregivers of patients with anorexia nervosa (AN) and associated with poorer outcome for patients. In this study, we examined the prevalence of high EE in caregivers of adolescents with AN and analyzed predictors for EE using multivariate linear regression models. We further analyzed whether EE is reduced by the "Supporting Carers of Children and Adolescents with Eating Disorders in Austria" (SUCCEAT) intervention using general linear mixed models and whether a reduction of EE predicts patients' outcomes. Caregivers were randomly allocated to the SUCCEA

BACKGROUND: The negative interactions between Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients and their caregivers may provoke criticism, hostility, and emotional overinvolvement that characterise highly expressed emotion (EE) attitudes. In this study, we hypothesised that affective temperament traits of AD caregivers are related to their high EE levels independent from other patient and caregiver characteristics.
METHODS: Eighty AD patients were assessed through Clinical Dementia Rating Scale (CDR), and Mini-Mental State Examination. Expressed Emotion Scale (EES), Temperament Evaluation of Memphis, Pisa,

Relatives' criticism of, hostility toward, and emotional overinvolvement (EOI) with patients are predictive of treatment response and relapse. Although these constructs have been linked to relatives' attributions for patient problems, little research has yet evaluated attributions for specific types of problems. This study examined event-specific attributions (i.e., attributions specifically for either disorder-related [DR] or non-DR problems) in relatives of patients with anxiety disorders. Relatives made more illness attributions (attributing problems to a patient's disorder) than controllab

OBJECTIVE: Expressed emotion (EE) predicts the outcome of treatment in patients with anxiety disorders. We aimed to investigate the relationship between EE and demographic and clinical characteristics of patients with panic disorder (PD), to determine whether there is a difference between PD, major depressive disorder (MDD) patients and healthy controls (HC) in terms of EE and to investigate the effect of EE on quality of life (QOL) in patients with PD.
METHODS: Our study involved a total of 150 participants (50 patients in each group). All participants were given the Level of Expressed Emoti

The role that the involvement of parents may play in the treatment outcome of their children with anxiety disorders is still under debate. Some studies dealing with other disorders have examined the role that the expressed emotion (EE) construct (parental overinvolvement, criticism and hostility) may play in treatment outcome and relapse. Given that some of these aspects have been associated with social anxiety for a long time, it was hypothesized that EE may be associated with lower treatment outcome. The sample was composed of 16 adolescents who benefited from a school-based, cognitive-behav

The relationship of expressed emotion (EE) to behavior therapy outcome for obsessive-compulsive disorder (n = 60) and panic disorder with agoraphobia (n = 41) was investigated. Relatives' emotional overinvolvement and hostility predicted higher rates of treatment dropout. Higher hostility, as assessed by the Camberwell Family Interview (CFI), was related to poorer outcome for target ratings and for the Social Adjustment Scale; higher perceived criticism was also predictive of worse response on target ratings. In contrast, nonhostile criticism on the CFI was associated with better outcome on th

The Five-Minute Speech Sample (FMSS; Magana et al., 1986) is a brief method designed to assess the "expressed emotion" (EE) status of a respondent. The FMSS-EE rating is derived from statements made by a patient's key relative during a 5-minute monologue, with codes similar to those used in the original EE rating system (e.g., criticism and emotional overinvolvement). Rating is done from the audiotape and takes about 15-30 minutes. The article reports on the results of a cross-national study carried out in Germany using the FMSS with a sample of 60 relatives of schizophrenic patients. Results

INTRODUCTION: Suicidal ideation (SI) is a major public health concern among adolescents. Although parental criticism within the Expressed Emotion (EE) framework has been linked to SI, the impact of a balance between positive and negative interaction remains understudied. This study introduces the Positivity-Negativity Difference of EE (PND-EE), investigates its relationship with SI, and examines whether dimensions of the Interpersonal Theory of Suicide (IPTS) mediate this relationship.
METHODS: The study included a combined clinical and population-based sample of 46 adolescents (Mage = 15.37,

OBJECTIVE: Caregiver expressed emotion (EE), an interview-based measure of emotional valence within an interpersonal relationship, is associated with psychosocial outcomes across multiple conditions. Guided by a model implicating a bidirectional role of "Chronic Family Stress" in the unfolding of EE in family environments, the current study examined demographic, medical, and family-level variables in association with EE in caregivers of children with spina bifida (SB).
METHODS: Data were combined from 2 distinct studies of families with a child with SB, resulting in a sample of 174 (ages 8-17

Expressed emotion has been robustly associated with negative mental health outcomes. Understanding correlates of expressed emotion by family members of individuals with opioid use disorder is important, as this group faces high levels of stress and can play an important role in their loved ones' treatment. Thus, immediate family members of individuals who sought treatment for opioid problems (N = 195) completed a web-based survey that included measures of expressed emotion, self-stigma, social support, and demographic characteristics. Multiple linear regression analyses were conducted to exami

BACKGROUND: Expressed emotion (EE) is a global index of familial emotional climate, which is comprised of emotional over-involvement (EOI) and critical comments (CC)/hostility. Although EE is an established predictor of negative outcomes for both people with long-term mental health difficulties and their family carers, its psychological underpinnings remain relatively poorly understood. This paper examined associations between attachment, mentalisation ability and aspects of EE.
METHODS: Carers of people with long-term mental health difficulties (n = 106) completed measures of adult attachmen

Expressed Emotion (EE; criticism/hostility and emotional overinvolvement) displayed in family interactions has been associated with the presence and poorer course of multiple disorders in adults and children. As such, validating appropriate tools for measuring EE could have important implications for research and clinical practice. Child EE measures are limited though there are some established methods of assessing EE in adults. The Expressed Emotion Adjective Checklist (EEAC), a self-report measure of EE, has demonstrated validity with adults but has not been evaluated in child samples. The p
