BACKGROUND: Extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) was first introduced into clinical practice in 1982 and has been a beneficial inclusion to the noninvasive treatment option of numerous orthopaedic pathologies. However, clinical evidence of the use of ESWT for various foot and ankle disorders has been limited with a consensus on its efficacy yet available. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to systematically review the literature, to provide a critical evaluation and meta-analysis for the use of ESWT in foot and ankle disorders.
METHODS: The PubMed and Embase databases were systematica

BACKGROUND: This systematic review explored the midterm effectiveness of extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) in reducing pain and improving shoulder function. Calcified rotator cuff tendinitis is a common cause of chronic shoulder pain that leads to significant pain and functional limitations. ESWT is an alternative to surgery when conservative treatments such as nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs, steroidal injections, and physiotherapy fail to relieve symptoms. It is hypothesised that ESWT is effective in the midterm for reducing pain and improving function for patients with chronic cal

Extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) is applied successfully in various orthopedic disorders. Since shockwaves have demonstrated significant bactericidal effectiveness in vitro, safety and effectiveness of ESWT in vivo were evaluated in a rabbit model of osteomyelitis. Chronic osteomyelitis was induced by injecting sodium morrhuate and Staphylococcus aureus into the proximal tibia of 12 New Zealand white rabbits. Four and five wk after the initial operation, soft focused ESWT was applied twice to the infected limbs. Clinical parameters and laboratory values were followed and blood samples w

Background: Chronic lateral epicondylitis (LE), also known as tennis elbow, affects 1-3% of the population, primarily those over 40 years old. Most cases resolve with conservative treatments, but some require more advanced interventions. Extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) has emerged as a non-surgical treatment option, utilizing either low- or high-energy levels to alleviate pain and improve function. Objective: This study aimed to compare the efficacy of low-energy versus high-energy ESWT in the treatment of chronic LE, focusing on pain relief and functional improvement. Methods: A retro

Chronic prostatitis (CP) is one of the diseases that reduce the quality of life (QoL) of young men. To date, there is no consensus on the management of these patients. It is essential to continue research into the treatment of CP, despite the use of various therapies, including low-energy extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT). The main objective of this study is to observe and record the clinical symptomatology of patients during a 48-week follow-up period after ESWT treatment. Between 2019 and 2021, 28 patients with type IIIB CP/chronic pelvic pain syndrome were enrolled. Patients underwent

Eighty-five patients with a chronic therapy-resistant lateral epicondylitis (LE) were treated with extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT). All patients had been previously treated with physical therapy, local injections, and other conservative procedures for at least 6 months. Three weekly sessions of ESWT were performed under local anesthesia with a Dornier Epos Ultra (energy flux density 0.05-0.18 mJ/mm2). Complications such as small hematomas were only found in four patients. After a mean follow-up of 30.7 months, 78 patients could be evaluated with the Roles and Maudsley score. Of these

BACKGROUND: Extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) is recommended as an alternative treatment for lateral epicondylitis (LE). An influence on the blood perfusion is considered to be one possible effect. Infrared thermography is used in this trial to measure effects of ESWT on the thermal regulation in the target area.
METHODS: 33 patients with chronic LE were examined in a prospective, placebo-controlled single blind study with an independent observer. 3 x 2000 impulses of an energy flux density ED+ 0.22 mJ/mm2 were applied under local anaesthesia as verum-ESWT. Placebo-ESWT was performed un

BACKGROUND: Conservative treatment, such as electrical stimulation and steroid injection, have been employed in an attempt to improve symptoms after peripheral nerve injury, without significant success. Although non-invasive and safe extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) can be a practical alternative, the therapeutic effects of ESWT on peripheral nerve remyelination has not been established.
OBJECTIVES: To investigate the effects of ESWT on peripheral nerve remyelination and gait function for 5 weeks in a sciatic nerve crush model.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: In total, we divided 97 rats into 5

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinical effect of low-intensity extracorporeal shockwave therapy (LI-ESWT) on Peyronie's disease.
METHODS: From October 2016 to December 2017, we treated 32 cases of Peyronie's disease by LI-ESWT, with the therapeutic index of 0.09 mJ/mm2 and a pulse frequency of 120 beats/min. Each plaque was approached from two angles, each angle with a shockwave output of 900 times, and the larger ones from three points, each with an output of 600 times in addition to 300 times from the distal and proximal ends of the plaque, respectively. All the patients received 12 courses

Extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) can induce wound healing by increasing tissue microcirculation. However, studies on the effect of ESWT on enhancing tissue microcirculation in diabetic foot ulcer (DFU), particularly on when the microcirculation increases after ESWT application, are still lacking. Therefore, we aimed to examine the effectiveness of ESWT in promoting microcirculation in DFU patients in a time-dependent manner. We included 50 feet of 25 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and Wagner grade I to II DFU in this study. The affected feet were used as the ESWT group and the u

Compared to other long bones, forearm fractures are particularly challenging due to the high rate of complications. These include malunion, delayed/nonunion, wrist and elbow movement reduction, and pain. Surgical procedure is considered the gold standard for managing delayed union and nonunion of the long bones. However, in the last decades, extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) has emerged as an effective and less invasive approach to enhance bone regeneration and fracture healing, avoiding major complications of surgical procedures. In contrast to the broad literature reporting good clinic
