Intergenerational transmission of depressive and anxiety disorders: Mediation via youth personality.

Youth personality is hypothesized to mediate the intergenerational transmission of internalizing disorders. However, this has rarely been examined. We tested whether the intergenerational transmission of depressive and anxiety disorders is mediated by youth neuroticism and extraversion, and how parent personality influenced these relationships. Participants included 550 adolescent girls, aged 13-15 years at baseline (T1), and a coparticipating biological parent. Depressive and anxiety disorders were assessed by interview at T1, and adolescents were reinterviewed every 9 months for 3 years (T2-

[Studies of the personality of nursing students].

This study evaluates diverse psychological variables in 35 third-year nursing students. Personality is studied according to Eysenck's theories, by means of the E.P.Q. questionnaire; assertive behavior is studied by means of the Gambrill and Richey assertiveness questionnaire; and the hostility set is also measured by means of the Buss-Durkee questionnaire. Likewise, due to the results obtained, the authors point out the necessity to work on the theme of assertiveness in nursing students.

Negative affectivity predicts individual differences in decision making for preschoolers.

The authors' goal in conducting this study was to explore the association between temperament and future-oriented decision making. Forty-three preschoolers (mean age = 51 months) were given a child variant of the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT) and asked to choose between a deck with higher immediate rewards and a deck with higher future rewards. Children who were higher on the Extraversion/Surgency factor of the Child Behavior Questionnaire chose more frequently from the higher immediate rewards deck early in the game. The externalizing dimension of Negative Affectivity (anger/frustration, soothabil

Platelet MAO activity and personality characteristics. A study in schizophrenic patients and normal individuals.

Low levels of platelet monoamine oxidase have been found in schizophrenic and bipolar depressive patients. The enzyme activity seems to correlate negatively with certain personality traits (social activity, sensation seeking, hypomania, positive affect and monotony avoidance) which are correlated to some extent with the score "extraversion" from the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire (EPQ). The present study was carried out in an attempt to investigate further the possible correlation between platelet MAO activity and the personality traits measured by the EPQ. 41 schizophrenic patients and 20

[Current developments in genetics and their implications concerning the problems of social deviations].

A review of historical developments in the field of human genetics reveals much conflict between those espousing and hereditarian position and those maintaining an environmentalist point of view. A confusion of political, propaganda, and ideological objectives with those of science has had deleterious effects on the field of human genetics, and upon the willingness of some disciplines to accept genetic contributions to the understanding of human behavior. Modern thinking in behavioral genetics rejects the Nature-Nurture dichotomy as incorrect and meaningless. The phenotype cannot be inherited;

Patterns and predictors of cognitive function and post-traumatic growth in cancer patients: a latent profile analysis.

BACKGROUND: Cancer patients often face concurrent challenges of cancer-related cognitive impairment (CRCI) and opportunities for post-traumatic growth (PTG), but existing research primarily adopts a variable-centered approach, failing to capture the heterogeneous co-occurrence patterns of CRCI and PTG or identify key predictors of these patterns. This study aimed to explore latent profiles of psychological adaptation and their predictive factors among cancer patients, thereby responding to the practical need for refined understanding of heterogeneous adaptation patterns and providing a referen

Betel Quid Chewing, Personality and Mood: Betel Quid Chewing Associated with Low Extraversion and Negative Mood.

BACKGROUND: Betel quid (BQ), chewed by about 600 million people worldwide, is one of the most widely used addictive substances. Little is known about psychological factors in BQ chewers. OBJECTIVES: The present study was the first attempt to explore the relationships between BQ chewing, personality, and mood. METHODS: A survey was conducted with a purposive sample to assess BQ chewing habits in four subgroups: BQ-only users, BQ users who smoke and/or drink, smokers and/or drinkers only, and substance nonusers. A total of 494 participants were recruited from the civilian, non-institutionalize

Profiles of reminiscence among older adults: perceived stress, life attitudes, and personality variables.

The goal of the present study was to identify subgroups of older participants on the basis of unique configurations of variables among functions of reminiscence, personality traits, life attitudes, and perceived stress by means of cluster analysis. Ninety-three older adults (M = 66.7 years of age) completed the NEO-Five Factor Inventory, the Life Attitude Profile-Revised, the Reminiscence Functions Scale, and the Psychological State of Stress Measure. Cluster membership was determined on the basis of intra-personal functions of reminiscence (Boredom Reduction, Death Preparation, Identity, Bitt

Nightmare Coping Strategies and Their Association With Big Five Personality Traits.

Although about 5% of the German population report having nightmares at least once a week, nightmares are inadequately diagnosed and treated. We therefore examined how people in the general population cope with nightmares in everyday life. The present study aimed to examine the influence of Big Five personality traits on nightmare-coping behaviour. In an online survey of 411 participants (mostly psychology students), we used established questionnaires and a modified coping scale to assess strategy use and perceived effectiveness. We hypothesized that openness predicts information seeking, extra

Predicting clinical outcomes in a blended care intervention for early psychosis: Acceptance and Commitment Therapy in Daily-Life (ACT-DL).

ACT in Daily Life (ACT-DL) is a blended-care Ecological Momentary Intervention that extends ACT into the daily life of individuals, improving psychotic distress, negative symptoms, and global functioning. However, it remains unclear whether ACT-DL works equally for everyone. We investigated whether moderators (i.e., sociodemographic information, personality, and trauma history) determine clinical outcomes in individuals with early psychosis receiving ACT-DL. Seventy-one participants from the INTERACT trial, using ACT-DL, were analyzed. Outcomes included psychotic distress, negative symptoms, g

Life course influences of physical and cognitive function and personality on attitudes to aging in the Lothian Birth Cohort 1936.

BACKGROUND: Reports of attitudes to aging from older people themselves are scarce. Which life course factors predict differences in these attitudes is unknown. METHODS: We investigated life course influences on attitudes to aging in healthy, community-dwelling people in the UK. Participants in the Lothian Birth Cohort 1936 completed a self-report questionnaire (Attitudes to Aging Questionnaire, AAQ) at around age 75 (n = 792, 51.4% male). Demographic, social, physical, cognitive, and personality/mood predictors were assessed, around age 70. Cognitive ability data were available at age 11. RE

Prediction of 6-yr symptom course trajectories of anxiety disorders by diagnostic, clinical and psychological variables.

This study aimed to identify course trajectories of anxiety disorder using a data-driven method and to determine the incremental predictive value of clinical and psychological variables over and above diagnostic categories. 703 patients with DSM-IV panic disorder with or without agoraphobia, agoraphobia, social phobia, or generalized anxiety disorder were selected from a prospective cohort study. Latent Growth Mixture Modeling was conducted, based on symptoms of anxiety and avoidance as assessed with the Life Chart Interview covering a 6-year time period. In 44% of the participants symptoms of

Who becomes addicted and to what? psychosocial predictors of substance and behavioral addictive disorders.

A multitude of psychological and social factors likely contribute to the development and maintenance of addictive disorders. As different people develop different addictions, it is important to understand whether psychosocial factors are related differently to different types of addictive disorders. In this study, we examined the unique interaction of personality traits, family environment, and life events in predicting substance (drugs, alcohol) and behavioral (gambling, sex) addictive disorders, among 207 participants suffering from an addictive disorder and 79 controls. Results identified s

Personality factors in patients with myasthenia gravis: A prospective study.

INTRODUCTION: In myasthenia gravis (MG), depression and anxiety have frequently been reported as comorbidities. However, little is known about personality characteristics in MG patients. We aimed to characterise personality traits in MG and to correlate them with disease severity and disease course. METHODS: The Big Five Inventory data questionnaire was used to investigate personality traits in 44 MG patients and 45 healthy controls similar in age and gender. In 28 MG patients, a caregiver was also available for patient assessments to limit bias associated with social desirability in patients

[Coping with stress as a paradigm of the psychopathology in childhood and adolescence].

Stress coping can be valid for a paradigm of psychopathology of children and adolescents. This concept is supported by an extensive literature which shows the way of coping from a "footnote to stress theory" (Lazarus) to its central concept. Neither the "objective" stress (stimulus side) nor the specificity of stress reaction (adaptation syndrome) are the important factors, but rather the mediation between stress coping and the individual, the transaction in the sense of an exchange process. Above all, permanent personality attributes have been examined here, most intensively extraversion/intr

Stress, extraversion, social support, and resilience in pre-nursing students: A correlational study.

BACKGROUND: To address the persistent nursing shortage, universities are increasingly focusing on nursing student retention. However, nursing students face numerous obstacles that hinder academic progress. In pre-nursing students who haven't started formal nursing education or clinical courses, a negative correlation exists between stress and persistence. Understanding the relationships between stress, extraversion, social support, and resilience will provide new insights into pre-nursing student well-being, success, and retention. AIM/OBJECTIVE: The aim of this research study is to describe
