Effects of Coexposure to Air Pollution from Vegetation Fires and Extreme Heat on Mortality in Upper Northern Thailand.

Background: understanding the effects of coexposure to compound extreme events, such as air pollution and extreme heat, is important for reducing current and future health burdens. This study investigated the independent and synergistic effects of exposure to air pollution from vegetation fires and extreme heat on all-cause mortality in Upper Northern Thailand. Methods: we used a time-stratified case-crossover study design with a conditional quasi-Poisson model to examine the association between mortality and coexposure to air pollution due to vegetation fire events (fire-PM2.5) and extreme he

Decoupling between stomatal conductance and photosynthesis occurs under extreme heat in broadleaf tree species regardless of water access.

High air temperatures increase atmospheric vapor pressure deficit (VPD) and the severity of drought, threatening forests worldwide. Plants regulate stomata to maximize carbon gain and minimize water loss, resulting in a close coupling between net photosynthesis (Anet ) and stomatal conductance (gs ). However, evidence for decoupling of gs from Anet under extreme heat has been found. Such a response both enhances survival of leaves during heat events but also quickly depletes available water. To understand the prevalence and significance of this decoupling, we measured leaf gas exchange in 26 t

A population-based case-control study of the association between weather-related extreme heat events and orofacial clefts.

BACKGROUND: Limited epidemiologic research exists on the association between weather-related extreme heat events (EHEs) and orofacial clefts (OFCs). We estimated the associations between maternal exposure to EHEs in the summer season and OFCs in offspring and investigated the potential modifying effect of body mass index on these associations. METHODS: We conducted a population-based case-control study among mothers who participated in the National Birth Defects Prevention Study for whom at least 1 day of their first two post-conception months occurred during summer. Cases were live-born infa

Interpretable machine learning for identifying determinants of high hypertension burden under extreme heat vulnerability: evidence from Maryland, USA.

Extreme heat poses increasing risks to cardiovascular health, yet fine-scale determinants of heat-related hypertension burden remain insufficiently understood. This study examines high hypertension burden in a heat-vulnerability context across 1,385 census tracts in Maryland using an interpretable machine learning framework. An XGBoost model was developed to classify census tracts with high hypertension burden using demographic, socioeconomic, built-environment, heat anomaly, and adaptive-capacity variables. SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) were then used to identify key predictors, assess

Definition of mortality-associated thermal markers for an extreme heat alert system in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil.

OBJECTIVE: To estimate daily maximum temperature markers for defining heat wave alert levels in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil. METHODS: the association between daily maximum temperature and mortality was estimated using quasi-Poisson regression with distributed lag non-linear models, considering lags from 0 to 21 days and adjustment for temporal trend, seasonality, and day of the week. The minimum mortality temperature was used as the reference for estimating relative risks, and high percentiles supported the definition of operational thresholds. RESULTS: The minimum mortality tempera

Extreme heat and hospital admissions in older adults: A small-area analysis in the Greater Boston metropolitan area.

Extreme heat (EH) is a leading cause of weather-related fatalities in the United States. In Massachusetts, average temperatures have increased by 1.9 °C since the 20th century, higher than the global average increase of 1.1 °C. EH disproportionately impacts communities, exacerbating social inequities. This study examined the risks of heat-related hospitalizations in each small area of the Greater Boston Metropolitan Area using Medicare data (2000-2016). EH events included daily heat index (HI), days with an HI above the 90th percentile, and heat waves (≥2 consecutive EH days). We applied a cas

Extremely elevated body temperature: case report and review of classical heat stroke.

Classical heat stroke is a rare disease in moderate climates. We report a patient who demonstrated the classical triad of elevated body temperature, neurological disturbances, and anhidrosis. He developed rhabdomyolysis and acute renal failure. Eventually he died. Since manifestations of classical heat stroke appear to mimic an acute phase response, cytokines are thought to play an important role in its pathogenesis.

Future increase in compound soil drought-heat extremes exacerbated by vegetation greening.

Compound soil drought and heat extremes are expected to occur more frequently with global warming, causing wide-ranging socio-ecological repercussions. Vegetation modulates air temperature and soil moisture through biophysical processes, thereby influencing the occurrence of such extremes. Global vegetation cover is broadly expected to increase under climate change, but it remains unclear whether vegetation greening will alleviate or aggravate future increases in compound soil drought-heat events. Here, using a suite of state-of-the-art model simulations, we show that the projected vegetation

Coordinating extreme-heat adaptation at mega-sporting events: early warning and cost sharing in a multi-actor differential game.

INTRODUCTION: Coordinating extreme-heat adaptation at mega-sporting events is a time-dependent public health challenge because public authorities, event organizers, and participating teams control different protective measures while heat risk evolves over a finite competition horizon. Existing sport-heat research describes exposure and prevention yet provides limited guidance on how adaptation should be timed, coordinated, and financed across responsible institutions. METHODS: We develop a three-actor linear-quadratic differential game with gross event heat-risk pressure and accumulated adapt

Physical performance in elite male soccer under extreme heat: A case study of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup.

The 2025 FIFA Club World Cup was held primarily during the summer season in the Northern Hemisphere, with reports of athletes exposed to significant environmental heat stress. We investigated whether environmental conditions, along with other factors (e.g., time of day, players' age and field position, and club geographic origin), influenced physical performance in this tournament. Information about the performance during 57 matches (n = 1070 observations) was extracted from FIFA technical reports, whereas environmental conditions were obtained through mathematical modeling (ERA5 reanalysis).

Health impacts of extreme heat in medically at-risk populations: a space-time stratified case-crossover analysis in Belgium.

BACKGROUND: The impact of heat on a vulnerable population, particularly those with pre-existing chronic diseases, is a growing public health concern. However, the risks for those with specific conditions and their variation across geographic, demographic, and socioeconomic (SES) status remain underexplored. This study aimed to investigate the association of extreme heat with morbidity and mortality among individuals with pre-existing chronic diseases in Flanders, Belgium. METHODOLOGY: We analysed 14 years (2005-2019) of general practitioners (GPs) data from Flanders, northern Belgium, assessi

Early-Life Experiences as Moderators of the Relationship Between Extreme Heat and Alcohol Consumption among Older Adults: Quantitative Study.

BACKGROUND: Climate change has intensified the frequency and duration of extreme heat events worldwide, posing growing public health risks, particularly for older adults who are physiologically more susceptible to heat-related illnesses. Concurrently, alcohol consumption among older adults in the United States has risen significantly over the past 2 decades, increasing vulnerability to dehydration, cardiovascular strain, and cognitive impairment during heat exposure. Emerging evidence suggests that environmental stressors such as extreme heat may exacerbate maladaptive coping behaviors, includ

Extreme heat and pediatric health in a warming world: a space-time stratified case-crossover investigation in Ontario, Canada.

BACKGROUND: Globally, climate change is causing frequent and severe extreme heat events (EHEs). A large body of literature links EHEs to multiple health endpoints. While children's physiology and activity patterns differ from those of adults in ways that are hypothesized to increase susceptibility to such endpoints, research gaps remain regarding the specific impacts of EHEs on child health. This study evaluated pediatric emergency healthcare utilizations associated with EHEs in Ontario. METHODS: Applying a space-time stratified case-crossover design, associations between EHEs (same-day or la

Frequency of Extreme Heat Event as a Surrogate Exposure Metric for Examining the Human Health Effects of Climate Change.

Epidemiological investigation of the impact of climate change on human health, particularly chronic diseases, is hindered by the lack of exposure metrics that can be used as a marker of climate change that are compatible with health data. Here, we present a surrogate exposure metric created using a 30-year baseline (1960-1989) that allows users to quantify long-term changes in exposure to frequency of extreme heat events with near unabridged spatial coverage in a scale that is compatible with national/state health outcome data. We evaluate the exposure metric by decade, seasonality, area of th

The tightening grip of heat: Understanding human survivability in the face of rising heat extremes - A physiological perspective inspired by the legacy of John R. Sutton.

Rising global temperatures and increasingly frequent heatwaves pose a growing threat to human health. Understanding how humans tolerate environmental heat has therefore become a central challenge in environmental physiology. Building upon the scientific legacy of John R. Sutton, this narrative review examines the physiological determinants of human heat tolerance and their implications for health in a warming climate. We first consider approaches used to characterize thermal strain, highlighting evidence that body temperature measurements provide only a partial representation of whole-body hea

Extreme heat and cause-specific risk of hospital admission in the adult population in England: a case time series analysis.

OBJECTIVES: This study investigated the impact of heat on the risk of hospital admission due to a range of health conditions in England. DESIGN: We used records of over 4 million hospital admissions in the summer months between 2008 and 2019, to construct daily time series of admissions in 32 837 census areas. Coupled with high-resolution environmental data, we conducted a case time-series analysis using distributed-lag non-linear models to measure the lagged relationship between summertime temperature and risk of admission for a broad set of health conditions. We derived the relative risks o

Association between extreme heat exposure and risk of preterm birth and its effect modifiers: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Extreme heat is an intensifying environmental stressor, with pregnant women identified as a highly vulnerable population. Although prior researches have examined heat exposure and preterm birth (PTB), inconsistencies in heat definitions and limited evaluation of effect modifiers hinder clear interpretation. OBJECTIVE: To systematically evaluate the association between extreme heat exposure (including temperature percentiles and heatwaves) and PTB risk. METHODS: We systematically searched five major databases (through June 2025) for studies on extreme heat ( ≥ 90th percentile) or
