Acute endogenous endophthalmitis caused by Streptococcus agalactiae: A case report and review.

BACKGROUND: Streptococcus agalactiae is a significant pathogen responsible for invasive diseases worldwide, and its prevalence among bacteremia patients has been increasing in recent years. Endogenous endophthalmitis is rare, accounting for only 5-15 % of all endophthalmitis cases. Among the pathogenic bacteria, Streptococcus agalactiae is responsible for approximately 5.2 % of endogenous endophthalmitis cases and is often associated with a poor visual prognosis. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of acute endogenous endophthalmitis caused by Streptococcus agalactiae. Emergency anterior cham

Modified four incomplete petals evisceration technique: A 14 year case series.

PurposeThe aim of this article is to describe the outcomes of a case series using our own variation of the four-petal evisceration technique which may minimize the rate of orbital implant exposure through a simple approach.MethodsOur new technique consists of incompletely dividing the first two scleral flaps, thus creating four incomplete petals that can be sutured over the orbital implant. A case series with a minimum follow-up of 12 months is reported.ResultsOne hundred and twenty-two eyes of 121 patients who underwent evisceration surgery using the described technique are included. No cases

Effects of secondary porous orbital implantation in anophthalmic sockets.

AIMS: Our objective was to evaluate the effects of secondary porous orbital implantation 10 years after the primary evisceration in anophthalmic patients. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This study is a retrospective case series. Secondary orbital implant insertion was performed for 25 anophthalmic patients (25 eyes) who had experienced primary evisceration more than 10 years earlier. Under general anesthesia, secondary enucleation removing the contracted sclera, including the optic nerve, was performed, and diverse types of porous orbital implants were inserted. After surgery, changes in the socket an

Emergency Treatment of Ocular Trauma.

Injuries to the eye and its adnexa are common in head and neck trauma centers. An ophthalmologist experienced in ocular traumatology is not always available. Therefore, every emergency physician should be familiar with the basic evaluation, triage, and management of ocular trauma. Above all, the identification of a need for immediate treatment should be implemented in the algorithm of an emergency room, especially in a head and neck trauma center, to reduce the risk of a devastating loss of vision. This article formulates the different types of ocular trauma and their required first-line thera

Radiation retinopathy secondary to treatment of maxillary sinus carcinoma: a dramatic case.

CLINICAL CASE: A 53-year old male presented with visual impairment in right eye after irradiation of right maxillary sinus carcinoma. Funduscopy shows radiation retinopathy: haemorrhages, exudates, macular oedema, and peripheral retinal ischaemia. A poor outcome was achieved despite laser treatment and intravitreal injections of bevacizumab, resulting in evisceration of the affected eye. DISCUSSION: Radiation retinopathy must be considered in any loss of vision after head and neck irradiation. Ophthalmological long-term follow-up of these patients is essential for an early diagnosis.

[Primary orbital leiomyosarcoma: a case report].

A 20-year-old girl came to the Tianjin Medical University Eye Hospital because of progressive herniation of her right eye for 3 months. Examination revealed a huge mass behind the right eyeball, which was clinically diagnosed as a space-occupying lesion of the right orbit. Because the tumor was close to the nerve, most of the tumor was resected and pathologically diagnosed as a poorly differentiated leiomyosarcoma. Orbital evisceration was performed later. There was no recurrence during the 10-year follow-up.

Anophthalmic socket: choice of orbital implants for reconstruction.

This literature review considers the treatment of an anophthalmic socket and the controversial aspects of the implants used to restore the lost volume after enucleation or evisceration, including the different materials employed and the main problems encountered during anophthalmic socket reconstruction. Since the 1980s, when integrated implants were proposed, there has been much controversy about what is the best implant for restoring the lost volume in an anophthalmic socket: integrated or non-integrated implants. Thus, we present this literature review to provide guidance to doctors and con

Solitary corneal myxoma.

PURPOSE: To report the clinicopathologic findings of a myxoma that arose in the subepithelial region of the right cornea of a 53-year-old man 4 years after successful treatment of an infectious corneal ulcer. METHODS: Histopathologic and histochemical evaluation of corneal tissue. RESULTS: This rare lesion appears to have originated from corneal stromal fibroblasts that reacted to an inflammatory stimulus and produced excessive amounts of glycosaminoglycans (hyaluronic acid) rather than normal collagen. CONCLUSION: Myxoma formation may require interruption of Bowman's layer and proximity of
