Using an eye-tracker to assess the effectiveness of a three-dimensional riding simulator in increasing hazard perception.

A crucial factor contributing to the high rate of road accidents involving young people is inexperience, in particular the inability to promptly identify risky situations. The aim of this study is to test the effectiveness of a riding simulator in improving this skill in young inexperienced riders. We use the first fixation latency to measure the improvement in detecting the hazardous object. Results show that four training sessions can significantly affect promptness in detecting new hazardous objects as they appear, decreasing the time needed to orient the eyes to the hazard.

Longitudinal Quantification of Eye-Movement Impairments after Pontine Hemorrhage.

INTRODUCTION: We report a case of hypertrophic olivary degeneration due to pontine hemorrhage. A 59-year-old male with untreated hypertension suffered a primary pontine hemorrhage, which caused horizontal eye-movement limitation. Progressive neurological deterioration with involuntary eye and palatal movements began months after hemorrhage. This was accompanied by magnetic resonance imaging evidence of hypertrophic olivary degeneration at 4.5 months. BACKGROUND: Primary pontine hemorrhage often leads to impairment of eye movements and diplopia. Hypertrophic olivary degeneration can also emerg

Neuro-ophthalmologic disorders following concussion.

Visual symptoms, such as photophobia and blurred vision, are common in patients with concussion. Such symptoms may be accompanied by abnormalities of specific eye movements, such as saccades and convergence, or accommodation deficits. The high frequency of visual involvement in concussion is not surprising, since more than half of the brain's pathways are dedicated to vision and eye movement control. These areas include many that are most vulnerable to head trauma, including the frontal and temporal lobes. Vision and eye movement testing is important at the bedside and on the sidelines of athl

Neural oscillations demonstrate that general anesthesia and sedative states are neurophysiologically distinct from sleep.

General anesthesia is a man-made neurophysiological state comprised of unconsciousness, amnesia, analgesia, and immobility along with maintenance of physiological stability. Growing evidence suggests that anesthetic-induced neural oscillations are a primary mechanism of anesthetic action. Each anesthetic drug class produces distinct oscillatory dynamics that can be related to the circuit mechanisms of drug action. Sleep is a naturally occurring state of decreased arousal that is essential for normal health. Physiological measurements (electrooculogram, electromyogram) and neural oscillatory (e

Co-occurrence of periodic alternating and pendular seesaw nystagmus in blindness.

Even though pendular seesaw nystagmus (PSN) or periodic alternating nystagmus (PAN) has been reported in blind persons, the co-occurrence of PSN and PAN has not been described. A 69-year-old woman with progressive visual loss to only light perception in both eyes showed PSN with a conjugate torsional component and the vertical components in the opposite directions in both eyes. In complete darkness, she also exhibited PAN in addition to PSN. PSN remained unchanged in darkness. The rest of the neurological examination, testing for mitochondrial mutations of Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy,

Toward an Automatic Assessment of Cognitive Dysfunction in Relapsing-Remitting Multiple Sclerosis Patients Using Eye Movement Analysis.

Despite the importance of cognitive function in multiple sclerosis, it is poorly represented in the Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS), the commonly used clinical measure to assess disability, suggesting that an analysis of eye movement, which is generated by an extensive and well-coordinated functional network that is engaged in cognitive function, could have the potential to extend and complement this more conventional measure. We aimed to measure the eye movement of a case series of MS patients with relapsing−remitting MS to assess their cognitive status using a conventional gaze track

Entropy of eye movement during rapid automatized naming.

Numerous studies have focused on the understanding of rapid automatized naming (RAN), which can be applied to predict reading abilities and developmental dyslexia in children. Eye tracking technique, characterizing the essential ocular activities, might have the feasibility to reveal the visual and cognitive features of RAN. However, traditional measures of eye movements ignore many dynamical details about the visual and cognitive processing of RAN, and are usually associated with the duration of time spent on some particular areas of interest, fixation counts, revisited fixation counts, sacca

A novel eye-tracking paradigm for indexing social avoidance-related behavior in fragile X syndrome.

Fragile X syndrome (FXS) is characterized by hallmark features of gaze avoidance, reduced social approach, and social anxiety. The development of therapeutics to manage these symptoms has been hindered, in part, by the lack of sensitive outcome measures. This study investigated the utility of a novel eye-tracking paradigm for indexing social avoidance-related phenotypes. Adolescent/young adult-aged males with FXS (n = 24) and typical development (n = 23) participated in the study. Participants viewed faces displaying direct or averted gaze and the first fixation duration on the eyes was record

Lexical word processing is unaffected by rapid invisible frequency tagging in reading: Evidence from eye movements.

The aim of this study was to test whether rapid invisible frequency tagging (RIFT)-a promising tool to directly measure covert attention allocated to parafoveal words-affects lexical processing during natural reading. RIFT involves flickering the background of the target word(s) at an imperceptible frequency (≥60 Hz), but imperceptibility does not necessarily equate to the absence of a cognitive effect. The current study examined the potential impact of the RIFT paradigm on eye movements. Forty-eight participants read 474 high-frequency and low-frequency target words that were embedded in one-

Markers of neurodegeneration in idiopathic rapid eye movement sleep behaviour disorder and Parkinson's disease.

Idiopathic rapid eye movement sleep behaviour disorder is an important risk factor in the development of Parkinson's disease. Numerous potential predictive markers of Parkinson's disease may present before motor symptoms emerge, but testing of these markers in rapid eye movement sleep behaviour disorder has been performed only in small studies. There has been no comparison of markers between patients with idiopathic rapid eye movement sleep behaviour disorder and Parkinson's disease, and between men and women. We evaluated an array of potential Parkinson's disease predictive markers in 159 pat

Effect of artificial scotomas on open-loop disparity vergence eye movements.

PURPOSE: To investigate the effect of an artificial scotoma on open-loop disparity vergence responses (DVRs) and vergence control mechanisms, we examined open-loop DVRs to disparity stimuli using monocular artificial scotomas in normal subjects. METHODS: Using a mirror haploscope with two computer monitors, we delivered disparity stimuli on a pair of random dot patterns subtending 40 by 30 degrees at 47 cm from each eye. The scotomas were black circles located in the center of a random dot pattern for the left eye. Eye movements of both eyes were recorded with a magnetic search coil system.

Assessment of visual space recognition in patients with visual field defects using head mounted display (HMD) system: case study with severe visual field defect.

For the quantitative assessment of visual field defects of cerebrovascular patients, we developed a new measurement system that could present various kinds of visual information to the patient. In this system, we use a head mounted display as the display device. The quantitative assessment becomes possible by adding the capability to measure the eye movement and the head movement simultaneously by means of a video apparatus of motion analysis. In our study, we examined the effectiveness of this system by applying it to a patient with serious visual field defects. The visual image of the reduce

Active linear head motion improves dynamic visual acuity in pursuing a high-speed moving object.

We usually move both our eyes and our head when pursuing a high-speed moving object. However, the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR), evoked by head motion, seems to disturb smooth pursuit eye movement because the VOR stabilizes the gaze against head motion. To determine whether head motion is advantageous for pursuing a high-speed moving object, we examined dynamic visual acuity (DVA) for a high-speed (80 degrees /s) rightward moving object with and without active linear rightward head motion (HM) at a maximum of 50 cm/s in nine healthy subjects. Furthermore, we analyzed eye and head movements to

Distinct Sources of Variability Affect Eye Movement Preparation.

The sequence of events leading to an eye movement to a target begins the moment visual information has reached the brain, well in advance of the eye movement itself. The process by which visual information is encoded and used to generate a motor plan has been the focus of substantial interest partly because of the rapid and reproducible nature of saccadic eye movements, and the key role that they play in primate behavior. Signals related to eye movements are present in much of the primate brain, yet most neurophysiological studies of the transition from vision to eye movements have measured th

Ocular advancement in monobloc distraction.

BACKGROUND: Monobloc distraction has been demonstrated to be an efficacious, safe, and stable method of providing functional and aesthetic improvement in children with syndromic craniosynostosis. Although the movement of bony structures following monobloc distraction has been quantitatively assessed before, objective analysis of the movement of soft tissues, such as the globe, has not been published previously. The authors present a method that assesses globe movement following monobloc distraction, using computed tomographic scan data. METHODS: The preoperative and postoperative computed tom

Interaction between eye and hand movements in multiple sclerosis patients with intention tremor.

Deficient eye and hand movements are present in patients with multiple sclerosis. In the present study, eye and hand movements were simultaneously measured during visually guided wrist step-tracking tasks in 16 patients with intention tremor and 15 healthy controls. The coupling between eye and hand movements was analyzed during simultaneous eye-hand tracking, and interactions were studied by comparing the coordinated eye-hand condition with isolated eye- or hand-tracking conditions. Despite movement abnormalities, the onset of eye and hand movements was highly correlated and an invariant coup

Role of visual attention in cognitive control of oculomotor readiness in students with reading disabilities.

This study investigated eye movement and comprehension therapy in Grade 6 children with reading disabilities (RD). Both order of therapy and type of therapy were examined. Furthermore, the implications of visual attention in ameliorating reading disability are discussed. Thirty-one students with RD were identified using standardized reading comprehension tests. Eye movements were analyzed objectively using an infra-red recording device. Reading scores of participating children were 0.5 to 1 SD below the national mean. Testing took place before the start of therapy (T1) and was repeated after 1

Botulinum toxin improves lid opening delays in blepharospasm-associated apraxia of lid opening.

Lid movement and EMG of the orbicularis oculi (OOc) were analyzed in 10 patients with apraxia of lid opening associated with blepharospasm before and after botulinum toxin treatment. The latencies to onset and to complete the eye opening and the time during which eye opening was sustained were studied in relation to OOc activity and compared with control values obtained in 12 healthy subjects. Following treatment there was an improvement of all lid opening measurements, a decrease of the abnormally prolonged OOc activity, and a reduction of the functional disability.
