Evaluation of anti-ulcer activity of hydromethanol crude extract and solvent fractions of Vicia faba (Fabaceae) seeds in mice.

Peptic ulcer disease affects 10% of the global population, and current treatments have limitations. Vicia faba seeds are traditionally used in Ethiopia for gastric ulcers and gastritis, but scientific evidence is lacking. Seeds were extracted with 80% hydro-methanol to evaluate its antiulcer effect, and part of the extract was fractionated into n-hexane, ethyl acetate, and aqueous solvents. The antiulcer activity of the crude extract and solvent fractions was tested using pylorus ligation and ethanol-induced ulcer models. Repeated dose studies were also performed on both models. In a pylorus l

Lupeol, the major compound of the dichloromethane extract of Millettia macrophylla Benth (Fabaceae), displays estrogenic effects in ovariectomized rats.

The present work deals with the assessment of the in vitro and in vivo estrogenic effects of the triterpenoids (lupenone, lupeol, and stigmastenone) isolated from Millettia macrophylla extract. The in vitro estrogenicity was performed by a reporter gene assay and estrogen receptor-α (ERα) target gene expression, whereas the in vivo estrogenicity was evaluated by a 3-day uterotrophic assay in ovariectomized rats. As results, lupenone and lupeol did not transactivate ERα as well as ERβ of human embryonic kidney 293T (HEK293T) cells. However, lupeol seems to be antagonistic to estrogen (E2) only

The position of prenylation of isoflavonoids and stilbenoids from legumes (Fabaceae) modulates the antimicrobial activity against Gram positive pathogens.

The legume plant family (Fabaceae) is a potential source of antimicrobial phytochemicals. Molecular diversity in phytochemicals of legume extracts was enhanced by germination and fungal elicitation of seven legume species, as established by RP-UHPLC-UV-MS. The relationship between phytochemical composition, including different types of skeletons and substitutions, and antibacterial properties of extracts was investigated. Extracts rich in prenylated isoflavonoids and stilbenoids showed potent antibacterial activity against Listeria monocytogenes and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus

Two new species of the Neotropical jumping plant-louse genus Mitrapsylla Crawford (Hemiptera: Psylloidea: Psyllidae: Ciriacreminae) are described from the highlands of the state of Minas Gerais in the Southeast Region of Brazil. Both species are associated with Chamaecrista (Fabaceae: Caesalpinioideae) and represent the first records of Psylloidea from this plant genus. Chamaecrista, especially its section Absus, has many species endemic to the Cerrado and Caatinga biomes in eastern Brazil. They are characterised by the presence of glandular trichomes that produce sticky secretion that hinders

Extensive reorganization of the plastid genome of Trifolium subterraneum (Fabaceae) is associated with numerous repeated sequences and novel DNA insertions.

The plastid genome of Trifolium subterraneum is 144,763 bp, about 20 kb longer than those of closely related legumes, which also lost one copy of the large inverted repeat (IR). The genome has undergone extensive genomic reconfiguration, including the loss of six genes (accD, infA, rpl22, rps16, rps18, and ycf1) and two introns (clpP and rps12) and numerous gene order changes, attributable to 14-18 inversions. All endpoints of rearranged gene clusters are flanked by repeated sequences, tRNAs, or pseudogenes. One unusual feature of the Trifolium subterraneum genome is the large number of disper

Screening and rational identification of a novel angiotensin-converting enzyme C-domain inhibitory peptide from Fabaceae food peptide library.

Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE), consisting of N-domain and C-domain, is a key regulator of blood pressure. The use of cACE-specific inhibitors helps minimize side effects in clinical applications. Legumes are a good source of proteins containing ACE inhibitory peptides; however, no studies have reported the identification of cACE-specific inhibitory peptides from Fabaceae. In this study, thermal hydrolysates from seeds, sprouts, pods, seedlings, and flowers of legumes were analyzed. Flowers of legumes exhibited a C-domain-preference ACE inhibition and anti-hypertensive effect in rats. Scr
