A good examination in facial nerve imaging (CT or MR imaging) depends on a good knowledge of anatomy. Two clinical situations must be considered: imaging of patients with or without facial palsy. CT and MR imaging are very useful when the symptoms are atypical or progressive: MR imaging gives very good information about the facial nerve inflammation but may also discover a schwannoma, a hemangioma, a meningioma, or a primitive or secondary cholesteatoma. In malignant tumors of the parotid gland, a study of the fallopian canal must always be performed to delineate an extension in the mastoid, t

In this retrospective study the respective values of MRI and CT in the location and nature diagnoses of facial nerve haemangiomas were evaluated. The four male patients examined were 31, 44, 56 and 62 years old; they presented with facial nerve pals and/or cochlear-vestibular dysfunction. The haemangiomas were located in the internal auditory canal, the geniculate ganglion, the tympanic segment of the facial nerve and the petrous bone apex. MRI revealed a tumoral process, while CT showed intratumoral calcifications and provided a diagnosis of mass nature in two cases. In the other cases the pr

The diagnosis and management of facial nerve disorders are challenging aspects of neurotological practice. In Bell's palsy and Herpes Zoster oticus facial nerve decompression is indicated in approximately 10 per cent of cases within the first three weeks if 90-95 per cent degeneration has occurred. The presence of a dry eye determines whether the lesion is proximal to the geniculate ganglion and a middle fossa approach is necessary. Injury to the facial nerve occurs most commonly as a result of temporal bone fractures, from either blunt trauma or penetrating wounds. Occasionally iatrogenic inj

The purpose of this prospective study was to define the enhancement pattern of the facial nerve in idiopathic facial paralysis (Bell's palsy) on magnetic resonance (MR) imaging with routine doses of gadolinium-DTPA (0.1 mmol/kg). Using 0.5T imager, 24 patients were examined with a mean interval time of 13.7 days between the onset of symptoms and the MR examination. Contralateral asymptomatic facial nerves constituted the control group and five of the normal facial nerves (20.8%) showed enhancement confined to the geniculate ganglion. Hence, contrast enhancement limited to the geniculate gangli

Although postparalytic facial nerve syndrome (PFS) is a frequent sequela of partial facial palsy, no effective treatment is currently available. Herein, we report a case of a cross-face nerve graft (CFNG) technique with selective neurectomy of the facial nerve in a 52-year-old female with moderate PFS (especially oral-ocular synkinesis and facial contracture) and a House-Brackmann score grade III. Selective neurectomy resulted in the release of the synkinesis and contractures. Furthermore, we reinnervated the levator muscles of the upper lip and oral commissure by connecting the contralateral

OBJECTIVE: To observe the effect of electroacupuncture (EA) on ultrastructure of facial nerve and Schwann cells in facial nerve injury rabbits so as to explore its mechanism underlying improving facial palsy.
METHODS: A total of 60 Japanese white rabbits were randomly assigned to normal control (normal, n = 6), sham-operation (sham, n = 18), model (n = 18) and EA (n = 18) groups. The facial nerve injury model was established by clamping the right facial nerve for 5 min by using a pair of forceps. EA (1.5 V, 3 Hz/60 Hz) was applied to "Yifeng" (TE 17)-"Hegu" (LI 4), and "Dicang" (ST4)-"Jiache"

Electroneurography (ENoG), an objective electrophysiologic measurement of compound muscle action potentials (CMAPs), is used to assess the integrity of a peripheral motor nerve. This method has been used for many years. In our study using an electrophysiologic instrument (Medelec MS6), the stimulating electrode was placed over the facial nerve anterior to the tip of the mastoid process and was manipulated to obtain the maximum CMAPs amplitude from the frontal muscle. With 30 normal subjects and 20 patients with facial nerve palsy, the results showed that the latencies and amplitudes were diffe

The findings of intraparotid facial nerve schwannoma (FNS) using preoperative diagnostic tools, including ultrasonography (US)-guided fine needle aspiration biopsy, computed tomography (CT) scan, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), were analyzed to determine if there are any useful findings that might suggest the presence of a lesion. Treatment guidelines are suggested. The medical records of 15 patients who were diagnosed with an intraparotid FNS were retrospectively analyzed. US and CT scans provide clinicians with only limited information; gadolinium enhanced T1-weighted images from MRI p

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the facial nerve contralateral innervation of patients with facial nerve injury.
METHODS: Electroneuronography (ENoG) of 22 university student volunteers (US) without any injury and systemic diseases and 108 patients with facial nerve injury were measured. The patients were divided into three groups: iatrogenic, traumatic, and Bell's palsy groups. When stimulating the facial nerve at the site below the lobule and behind the ramus, ENoGs of each branch of the facial nerve on ipsilateral and contralateral sides were recorded. A total of 76 branch I, 81 branch II, 88 br
