Unilateral facial nerve paralysis after electrocution injury.

We present a case of acute, unilateral facial nerve paralysis in a patient who had received a low voltage electrical current. This is an extremely rare cause of this neurological condition. The patient regained complete neurological function approximately three months after the incident. Unilateral facial nerve paralysis most commonly occurs due to infection or blunt or penetrating trauma; it has not been previously reported as a result of low voltage electrical injury.

Transcranial magnetic stimulation in acute facial nerve injury.

OBJECTIVE/HYPOTHESIS: Available electrodiagnostic tests that are used to evaluate facial nerve injury examine the nerve distal to the stylomastoid foramen; because most facial nerve injuries are within the temporal bone, the tests cannot evaluate the nerve at or across the injury site. The interpretation of these tests depends on the predictability (or unpredictability) of distal degenerative process. Transcranial magnetic stimulation may be able to stimulate the nerve proximal to the injury site. The hypothesis of the present study is that in cases of mild traumatic facial nerve injury where

[Histopathological study on traumatic facial nerve injury in the rabbits].

Six patterns of injuries (exposure, compression, crush, stretch, division and post-division anastomosis) were analysed in 136 facial nerve buccal branches of 68 rabbits in order to establish the experimental model for study of traumatic facial nerve injury. Changes of histopathology at definite time were studied. The results showed that: exposure can create degree I injury; compression, stretch and crush can create degree II-III injury; the prognosis in anastomosis group was obviously better than unanastomosis group. In moderate to serious injuries, changes of histopathology and ENoG were sync

Iatrogenic facial nerve injury during otologic surgery.

Perhaps the most devastating complication in otologic surgery is that of inadvertent injury to the facial nerve. A review of 22 patients who had sustained an iatrogenic facial nerve injury was conducted. Although the most common procedure being performed during the injury was mastoidectomy (55%), a surprising number of patients had injury during tympanoplasty (14%) or during removal of exostoses (14%). The most common area of injury to the facial nerve in this series was in the tympanic segment. In 79% of the patients, the facial nerve injury was not detected at the time of surgery. All patien

Anomalous relationship of the retromandibular vein to the facial nerve as a potential risk factor for facial nerve injury during parotidectomy.

Finding and protecting the facial nerve are a challenge for the surgeon performing parotid surgery. The abnormal relationship between the retromandibular vein and facial nerve and its branches may increase the risk of facial nerve injury during surgery. In this clinical report, we have reported a 41-year-old female patient with pleomorphic adenoma undergoing superficial parotidectomy, and we have discussed a new variation of facial nerve-retromandibular vein relationship.

Facial nerve injuries associated with orthognathic surgery: a review of incidence and management.

While facial nerve injuries associated with both extraoral and intraoral orthognathic surgery are rare, the results of such an injury can be devastating to the patient. A review of the literature shows that the majority of such injuries fall into the first-, second-, and third-degree injury categories. Prevention cannot be stressed enough; however, early recognition of an injury with prompt electrodiagnostic testing can assist with determining prognosis and treatment planning. When close observation is indicated, a variety of medical therapies have been suggested. For more severe injuries, ner

Facial nerve: A review of the anatomical, surgical landmarks and its iatrogenic injuries.

Facial nerve iatrogenic injuries are serious and can negatively affect the quality of life of the patients. Due to the properties of the nerve, the complications are devastating involving the aesthetic appearance and the function of the face. Moreover, the multiple branches of the nerve increase the risk of an iatrogenic injury making the detailed knowledge of the anatomical correlations around them critical. In this review, a meticulous analysis was performed including the surgical procedures posing the greater risk of an iatrogenic injury as well as the full description of all the reported a

Rabbit facial nerve regeneration in autologous nerve grafts after antecedent injury.

OBJECTIVE: The effect of incomplete antecedent injuries on subsequent facial nerve regeneration within cable graft repairs is not known. The purpose of this study is to compare facial nerve regeneration after an immediate and delayed neural cable graft repair. METHOD: Rabbit facial nerve regeneration after complete transectional injuries of the buccal division was compared in two experimental models. In one, a 10-mm segment of the nerve was transected, rotated 180 degrees, and immediately repaired as a cable graft (N=8). In the second, a preliminary nerve crush was allowed to recover over a 4

Facial nerve injury induces facilitation of responses in both trigeminal and facial nuclei of rat.

A study was made of the effects of facial nerve transection on trigeminal stimulation- evoked field potentials in the principal trigeminal (Pr5) and facial nuclei (7) in rats. Although the transected branch of the facial nerve contains pure motoric efferents, it resulted in enhanced responses in both Pr5 and 7. These electrophysiological results suggest a functional circuitry involving the whiskers, trigeminal nerve, Pr5 and 7 and the facial nerve as efferent. The disconnection (opening) of this loop results in enhanced responsiveness of the neurons in both Pr5 and 7.

Iatrogenic Facial Nerve Injury in Head and Neck Surgery in the Presence of Intraoperative Facial Nerve Monitoring With Electromyography: A Systematic Review.

The facial nerve is the seventh of 12 cranial nerves found in the head and neck region that facilitates several nerve fibers and pathways to perform various functions. Iatrogenic facial nerve injury during surgeries of the head and neck is common, ranging from 4-6%, particularly in procedures that involve mobilization or resection of associated anatomical structures. Any injury to the facial nerve or its branches impacts the quality of life and patient satisfaction as the degree of iatrogenic injury may result in partial or complete facial nerve paralysis. Of the various implementable techniqu
