Masting Breakdown in European Beech Reduces Fitness Benefits of Masting, Partly Explained by Climate Change.

Masting, highly synchronised but temporally variable seed production, is initiated by weather cues and is thus highly sensitive to climate change. Changes in these cues can lead to a masting breakdown, reducing the fitness benefits of masting through decreasing pollination efficiency and increasing predation risk for seeds. Here, we use 50 years of individual tree data on annual seed production of European beech (Fagus sylvatica) in the Netherlands to assess temporal changes in masting patterns and their consequences for the selective benefits of masting. Additionally, we use a novel approach

Planting sentinel European trees in eastern Asia as a novel method to identify potential insect pest invaders.

Quarantine measures to prevent insect invasions tend to focus on well-known pests but a large proportion of the recent invaders were not known to cause significant damage in their native range, or were not even known to science before their introduction. A novel method is proposed to detect new potential pests of woody plants in their region of origin before they are introduced to a new continent. Since Asia is currently considered to be the main supplier of insect invaders to Europe, sentinel trees were planted in China during 2007-2011 as an early warning tool to identify the potential for a

Improving Air Quality by Nitric Oxide Consumption of Climate-Resilient Trees Suitable for Urban Greening.

Nitrogen oxides (NOx), mainly a mixture of nitric oxide (NO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2), are formed by the reaction of nitrogen and oxygen compounds in the air as a result of combustion processes and traffic. Both deposit into leaves via stomata, which on the one hand benefits air quality and on the other hand provides an additional source of nitrogen for plants. In this study, we first determined the NO and NO2 specific deposition velocities based on projected leaf area (sV d) using a branch enclosure system. We studied four tree species that are regarded as suitable to be planted under predi

Salivary biomarkers in cancer detection and management.

The influence of nutrient availability on transpiration is not well understood, in spite of the importance of transpiration to forest water budgets. Soil nutrients have the potential to affect tree water use through indirect effects on leaf area or stomatal conductance. For example, following addition of calcium silicate to a watershed at Hubbard Brook, in New Hampshire, streamflow was reduced for 3 years, which was attributed to a 25% increase in evapotranspiration associated with increased foliar production. The first objective of this study was to quantify the effect of nutrient availabilit

Non-native Douglas fir seedlings outcompete native Norway spruce, silver fir and Scots pine under dry and nutrient-poor conditions.

Climate change is expected to significantly alter forest ecosystems, reducing the suitability of the key economic tree species Norway spruce (Picea abies) and European beech (Fagus sylvatica) in low- and mid-elevation forests of Central Europe. As these species face increasing pressures from drought, storms, and pests, it is crucial to identify alternative tree species that are economically viable and capable of maintaining primary ecosystem services. This study investigated the potential of Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii), a non-native conifer, to establish from seed and compete with nati

Thinking inside and outside the box: Comparing the efficacy of camera trap designs for surveying small mammals.

BACKGROUND: Small mammals are vital to ecosystem health and serve as key indicators of environmental changes. Population trends in the UK for many species have remained largely undocumented, however, emphasizing the need for more effective monitoring tools. This study evaluates the efficacy of three camera trap designs for detecting small mammals: no-box camera traps (NCTs), open box camera traps (OCTs), and closed tube camera traps (TCTs). METHODS: The study was conducted at Silent Valley Nature Reserve, South Wales, focusing on Fagus sylvatica woodland. The authors thank the reserve manager

Fatty Acid Profile of Fomes inzengae (Agaricomycetes) Basidiocarps Collected in Armenia.

The gas chromatography (GC) was used for quantitative and qualitative analysis of fatty acid (FA) profiles in hexane extracts of seven genetically identified basidiocarps of medicinal polypore fungus Fomes inzengae (Ces. & De Not.) Cooke collected in Ijevan, Aparan and Yerevan floristic regions of Armenia from Acer platanoides, Carpinus betulus, Fagus orientalis, Populus nigra and Salix alba host trees. In total, 25 (14 saturated and 11 unsaturated) from 30 FA were detected. Heneicosanoic, arachidic, tricosanoic, dihomo-γ-linolenicand and eicosapentaenoic FA were not found in studied samples.

Screening of Wood Raw Materials for Low-Odor Fiberboard and Particleboard Production: Analysis and Evaluation Based on Volatile Odor Compounds.

Woody raw materials of wood-based panels like fiberboard and particleboard are one of the primary sources of product odor and one of the indicators affecting the comprehensive health risk assessment of wood-based panel products. This study employed Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry-Olfactometry (GC-MS-O) to investigate the odorant composition and odor characteristics, including Total Odor Concentration (TOC), odor intensity (OI), odor activity value (OAV), and risk value (RV), of 22 wood species commonly used in fiberboard and particleboard production in China. This research identified the

Initial tree census for the Paint Rock Forest Dynamics Plot, Alabama, USA.

We present the initial woody stem census for the 20-ha Paint Rock Forest Dynamics Plot in 2019-2021 in north Alabama, USA. Our objectives were to improve our understanding of the ecology of the forest ecosystem, provide hands-on research experience to undergraduate students, create opportunities for collaboration with other disciplines, and monitor the dynamics of the forest. From its origin at the south corner (latitude: 34.769521°, longitude: -86.306079°), our plot is a rectangle of 400 m × 500 m, having its long side at 313° azimuth. The plot is in a mature mixed deciduous forest within the

Longitudinal studies on financial toxicity in cancer patients: a scoping review.

ObjectiveThis scoping review focuses on financial toxicity in cancer patients, aiming to identify its measurement time points, assessment tools, developmental trends, and influencing factors. Based on existing evidence, this review reveals the occurrence trajectory and long-term impacts of financial toxicity among cancer patients. It can provide a reference for improving patients' financial well-being in clinical practice and optimizing the medical security system at the health policy level and also points out key directions for future related research.MethodsThis study strictly followed the m
