Low Prevalence of Substandard and Falsified Antimalarial and Antibiotic Medicines in Public and Faith-Based Health Facilities of Southern Malawi.

AbstractSubstandard and falsified antimalarial and antibiotic medicines represent a serious problem for public health, especially in low- and middle-income countries. However, information on the prevalence of poor-quality medicines is limited. In the present study, samples of six antimalarial and six antibiotic medicines were collected from 31 health facilities and drug outlets in southern Malawi. Random sampling was used in the selection of health facilities. For sample collection, an overt approach was used in licensed facilities, and a mystery shopper approach in nonlicensed outlets. One hu

Who participates in the 'Celebrate Recovery' mutual-help organization? Results from a National US Investigation.

INTRODUCTION: Celebrate Recovery (CR) is a new, rapidly growing mutual-help organization (MHO) based on Christian principles and is the largest religious MHO in the US. However, very little is known about CR empirically. METHODS: Secondary data analysis of the National Recovery Study (NRS) (Kelly et al., 2017) compared CR attendees to lifetime MHO attendees with non-CR attendance on survey-weighted estimates of 1) demographic and substance use characteristics, 2) treatment and recovery support service histories, and 3) current recovery-related functioning. RESULTS: Compared to non-CR MHO par

Exploring Dementia Awareness, Beliefs, and Attitudes among Asian Indian Immigrants in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Asian Americans are severely underrepresented in Alzheimer disease and related dementias research, and the cognitive aging of Asian Indians in the United States is poorly understood. There is a pressing need to bridge the gap in the literature concerning dementia and cognitive impairment among Asian Indians to reduce the current disparities. This study examines how knowledge, beliefs, and attitudes shape dementia disparities among older Asian Indian immigrants in the United States. METHODS: In-depth interviews were conducted with Asian Indian adults, ages 50 years and older, who i

Use of UK faith Centre as a COVID-19 community vaccination clinic: exploring a potential model for community-based health care delivery.

INTRODUCTION: Effective and safe vaccines against COVID-19 are essential to achieve global control of the coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2). Using faith centres may offer a promising route for promoting higher vaccine uptake from certain minority ethnic groups known to be more likely to be vaccine hesitant. METHODS: This cross-sectional study explored attendees' perceptions, experiences of being offered, and receiving COVID-19 vaccination in a local mosque in Woking, Surrey, UK. About 199 attendees completed a brief questionnaire on experiences, views, motivations about attending the mosque and vaccin

The role of culturally appropriate interpersonal communication strategies to reduce hepatitis B and liver cancer disparities.

INTRODUCTION: Asian and Pacific Islander (API), African, and Caribbean immigrant groups in the U.S. are disproportionately impacted by chronic hepatitis B and hepatocellular carcinoma (primary liver cancer). Creating educational communication campaigns about hepatitis B and liver cancer for these communities is necessary to increase disease-related awareness and prompt health-promoting behaviors. Identifying interpersonal communication (IPC) preferences within diverse communities for integration into an educational campaign that emphasizes the link between hepatitis B and liver cancer can ulti

Intersectoral interventions for people living with obesity: a scoping review and bibliometric analysis.

BACKGROUND: Obesity is increasingly recognized as a complex chronic condition shaped by genetic, behavioural, social, and environmental factors. While intersectoral collaboration is considered essential to address these multifaceted drivers, few studies have systematically explored the nature and implementation of such interventions, particularly outside the clinical domain. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to identify and characterize intersectoral health interventions targeting people living with obesity within community and primary care settings, drawing from both scientific and grey literature

A case for implementation of adult pneumococcal vaccine program in Africa: review and expert opinion.

Vaccines are considered as a therapeutic area for children; the scientific community focuses mainly on managing chronic disease when it comes to adults. There currently is an increase in the burden of vaccine preventable illnesses in adults. Adult vaccination has been shown to dramatically increase the health and quality of life of older populations. Therefore, adult vaccinations need to be approached as a public health issue, similar to smoking cessation programs, for example. According to the Kenya Non-Communicable Diseases and injuries poverty commission report, 2018. Kenya has a high perce

Lightweight structure-aware explanations for rule-based models: application to radiotherapy risk communication in breast cancer.

OBJECTIVE: Rule-based models are often considered inherently interpretable because their explicit logical structure allows users to trace predictions back to human-readable rules. However, in complex domains such as healthcare, multiple rules involving numerous attributes may be activated simultaneously, making it difficult for end users to identify the most influential factors behind a prediction. This can limit practical transparency, particularly in clinical shared decision-making, where clear and trustworthy explanations are essential. An example is communicating the risk of side effects f

Cluster Randomized Clinical Trial of FAITH (Faith-Based Approaches in the Treatment of Hypertension) in Blacks.

BACKGROUND: Therapeutic lifestyle change (TLC) is a recommended treatment for patients with hypertension, but its effectiveness in community-based settings remains untested, particularly in black churches-an influential institution for health promotion in black communities. METHODS AND RESULTS: The FAITH study (Faith-Based Approaches in the Treatment of Hypertension) evaluated the comparative effectiveness of a TLC intervention plus motivational interviewing (MINT) sessions versus health education (HE) alone, on blood pressure (BP) reduction among blacks with uncontrolled hypertension. Evaluation of critical design parameters for RT-qPCR-based analysis of multiple dUTPase isoform genes in mice.

The coupling of nucleotide biosynthesis and genome integrity plays an important role in ensuring faithful maintenance and transmission of genetic information. The enzyme dUTPase is a prime example of such coupling, as it generates dUMP for thymidylate biosynthesis and removes dUTP for synthesis of uracil-free DNA. Despite its significant role, the expression patterns of dUTPase isoforms in animals have not yet been described. Here, we developed a detailed optimization procedure for RT-qPCR-based isoform-specific analysis of dUTPase expression levels in various organs of adult mice. Primer desi

Circuit-Based Understanding of Fine Spatial Scale Clustering of Orientation Tuning in Mouse Visual Cortex.

In sensory cortex of brain it is often the case that neurons are spatially organized by their functional properties. A hallmark of primary visual cortex (V1) in higher mammals is a columnar functional map, where neurons tuned to different stimuli features are regularly organized in space. However, rodent visual cortex is at odds with this rule and lacks any spatially ordered functional architecture, and rather neuron feature preference is haphazardly organized in patterns termed 'salt-and-pepper'. This sharp contrast in feature organization between the visual cortices of rodents and higher mam

Erratum to "Nanotherapeutic System with Effective Microwave Sensitization and Pyroptosis Programming Enable Synergistic Microwave-Immunotherapy in Bladder Cancer".

Diabetic kidney disease has increasingly emerged as a global public health concern, yet substantial challenges persist in its mechanistic research and drug development. Traditional 2-dimensional cell cultures and animal models frequently lack the capacity to faithfully recapitulate human pathophysiological conditions, and the use of animal models is increasingly limited by ethical and policy-related hurdles. In vitro models such as organoids and organs-on-a-chip have demonstrated remarkable advantages, enabling more faithful simulation of the in vivo microenvironment. The advancement of 3-dime

A philosophical approach to conjoined twins.

There are increasing numbers of attempts to surgically separate conjoined twins. Almost every type of conjoined twins have been separated, with varying results. Surgeons must often make the decision as to the desirability and feasibility of separation. These decisions are complicated by ethical problems that involve patient privacy, the allocation of shared organs, and in some instances the necessity for one twin to die to save the other. Although life as a conjoined twin would appear to be intolerable, there are historical as well as current instances of conjoined twins who have progressed to

Renal health and transplantation: a focus on ethnicity.

It is widely acknowledged within the United Kingdom that there are significant inequalities in renal health and transplant services--in relation to demand for, access to and waiting times for these services--between minority ethnic groups in particular. This phenomenon is not unique to the United Kingdom and affects many other countries that have a strong tradition of immigration. The solutions to reducing these inequalities are multi-faceted and require both short-term and long-term policy and resource-driven initiatives. In the short term, there is an urgent need to increase the number of or
