Childhood psychological maltreatment has psychological, behavioral, and emotional repercussions on individuals in adulthood. These reflections play a role in both the internal distress of individuals and the deterioration of their interpersonal relationships. The aim of this study was to examine the serial mediating role of psychological flexibility and family conflict in the relationship between childhood psychological maltreatment and subjective happiness. The study was conducted with 493 university students (61.7% female, 38.3% male), with ages ranging from 18 to 53 years (Mage = 24.02, SD

BACKGROUND: Armed conflict has significant impacts on individuals and families living in conflict-affected settings globally. Scholars working to prevent violence within families have hypothesised that experiencing armed conflict leads to an increase in family violence and mental health problems. In this review, we assessed the prevalence of family violence in conflict settings, its association with the mental health of survivors, moderating factors, and the importance of gender relations.
METHODS: Following PRISMA guidelines, we systematically reviewed quantitative and qualitative studies th

Family conflict has been demonstrated as a risk factor impacting children's mental health and behaviors; however, the mechanisms underlying these connections are unclear. Focusing on 1622 children from low-income families (51.4% boys, 38.3% White, 35.5% Hispanic/Latino, 22.1% African American, 4.1% other), the current study examines the role that maternal depression and parenting behaviors play in the associations between family conflict in early childhood and children's internalizing and externalizing behaviors in early adolescence. Family conflict was positively associated with maternal depr

INTRODUCTION: Chronic familial conflict is known to hinder the development of adaptive stress responding in adolescents. However, there are differences in how individuals respond to familial conflict, which may be explained by the temperament trait of Sensory Processing Sensitivity (SPS). The aim of the current study was to examine the unique and interactive effects of childhood family conflict and SPS on objective stress responding in a cohort of adolescents in the United States, ages 16-19 (n = 60, M age = 18.07 years, 71.68% female), with a range of early life trauma.

The expansion of digital communication has increasingly blurred the boundaries between work and personal life, making work scheduling through communication tools more common. In China, mobile platforms such as WeChat are widely used to facilitate work-related scheduling and coordination, allowing work instructions and messages to be communicated without being confined to fixed time periods. Using nationally representative data from the 2021 China General Social Survey (CGSS), this study examines the association between communication-tool-mediated work scheduling and employees' job satisfaction

BACKGROUND: Adolescent problem behaviors, including both internalizing (e.g., emotional symptoms) and externalizing difficulties (e.g., conduct problems, hyperactivity), are a significant risk factor in adolescent development. This study assessed the impact of maternal parenting stress on adolescent problem behaviors and explored mechanisms underlying this relationship.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to (1) identify potential profiles of maternal parenting stress, (2) examine differences in adolescent problem behaviors across these profiles, and (3) determine whether maternal work-family conflic

OBJECTIVES: Adult child caregivers of older adults living with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias are at risk of burnout due to competing caregiving demands from multiple generations. Yet, drawing from structural family theory, this study aims to examine the extent to which family dynamics, especially greater family cohesion and less family conflict, are associated with children's mental and physical health.
METHOD: The present study was secondary data analysis of an observational study, in which 150 pairs of adult-child caregivers and parents with early-stage cognitive impairment self

BACKGROUND: Work-family conflict is common among emergency department physicians. Identifying the factors associated with work-family conflict is key to reducing its negative impact on mental health and work attitudes. However, the work-family conflict of Chinese emergency department physicians and the related factors have been scarcely studied.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the current status and related factors of work-family conflict among Chinese emergency department physicians.
METHODS: A national cross-sectional study was conducted among emergency department physicians in

Stressful life experiences, such as sexual abuse and family violence/conflict, relate to an increased risk of mental health problems. Religion and spirituality may prevent this negative impact, but religion and spirituality are lower among survivors of stressful life experiences. To explore this effect, we examined the relationship between childhood sexual abuse and family violence/conflict on anger and depressed mood. Survey data were collected from a large population-based sample of Icelandic adolescents (N = 7,365) on their stressful life experiences, religion, spirituality, and mental heal

BACKGROUND: Despite the ongoing controversy regarding which types of stressors or resources contribute to psychological distress, there has been little research examining the relationship between war trauma, normative stressors, family resources for management and psychopathology.
AIMS: This study investigated the differences between mothers and fathers in psychological distress, normative stressors and war atrocities experienced, and family's resources for management. It was hypothesized that a combination of risk variables and protective variables would be predictive of psychological distre

Research has documented that maternal expressed emotion-criticism (EE-Crit) from the Five-Minute Speech Sample (FMSS) predicts family conflict and children's externalizing behavior in clinical and community samples. However, studies have not examined EE-Crit in maltreating or separated/divorced families, or whether these family risks exacerbate the links between EE-Crit and family conflict and externalizing behavior. The current study examined the associations between maternal EE-Crit, maltreatment, and separation/divorce, and whether maltreatment and separation/divorce moderated associations

Understanding the impact of political violence on child maladjustment is a matter of international concern. Recent research has advanced a social ecological explanation for relations between political violence and child adjustment. However, conclusions are qualified by the lack of longitudinal tests. Toward examining pathways longitudinally, mothers and their adolescents (M = 12.33, SD = 1.78, at Time 1) from 2-parent families in Catholic and Protestant working class neighborhoods in Belfast, Northern Ireland, completed measures assessing multiple levels of a social ecological model. AIMS: This study aims to examine the longitudinal associations between work-family conflict (WFC) and mental health among working parents. Specifically, we investigated whether within-person changes in WFC and family-to-work conflict (FWC) are associated with changes in mental health.
METHODS: Data from the Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia survey were used to employ within-person fixed effects regression analysis to examine associations between WFC and mental health in working-age adults (18-64 years) with parental responsibilities for children ≤14 years. The outcome, genera

AIM: To investigate the parallel mediating roles of affective rumination and problem-solving pondering (components of work rumination) in the relationship between organizational trust and work-family conflict among emergency department (ED) nurses. BACKGROUND: Promoting the balance between work and family for ED nurses is a favorable guarantee for maintaining social order. Organizational trust, as a beneficial resource for alleviating work-family conflict, has a positive significance for achieving work-family balance. However, the mediating mechanisms of the two dimensions of work rumination—a

Difficulty with emotion regulation is a transdiagnostic problem associated with a variety of psychological disorders. The biosocial model suggests that early biological vulnerability, including impulsivity, may potentiate across development by transacting with environmental risk factors leading to the development of emotional dysregulation. During transition from late childhood to early adolescence, family may be a prominent source of environmental influences. The primary aim of this study was to examine whether trait impulsivity and family conflict influence each other in a transactional fash

This study examines the relationship of decisional conflict about driving habits between older adult drivers (≥70 years old) and their family members and close friends. This secondary analysis utilizes data originating from a multi-site randomized controlled trial assessing the effect of a driving decision aid (DDA) intervention. Decisional conflict about stopping or changing driving habits for drivers was measured with the Decisional Conflict Scale (DCS). Dyadic associations between drivers' and study partners' (SPs') DCS scores were analyzed using an actor-partner interdependence model. Amon

Based on Freud's personality theory, 839 nurses from 5 public hospitals in Shandong Province were selected by the convenience sampling method. A cross-sectional survey was conducted to investigate the correlation among resilience, work-family conflict (WFC), and anxiety (SAS). The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship among resilience, WFC, and SAS of these nurses and to provide evidence with reducing WFC and SAS for the nurses. The results showed that the total score of resilience, WFC, and SAS was 58.00 ± 18.27, 53.46 ± 13.29, and 49.98 ± 14.73, respectively. There was 47.68%

Guided by emotional security theory, this study examined the family-level antecedents of children's reaction patterns to interparental conflict in a sample of 243 preschool children (M age = 4.60 years; 48% Black; 16% Latinx; 56% girls) and their parents in the Northeastern United States. Behavioral observations of children's responses to interparental conflict over two annual measurement occasions assessed their tendencies to exhibit four patterns of defending against threat: secure (i.e., efficiently address direct threats), mobilizing (i.e., high reactivity to potential threat and social op
