Health problems of anaesthetists and their families in the West Midlands.

A survey of all anaesthetists in the West Midlands region--that is, 10% of all the anaesthetists in England and Wales--showed that one in 10 of their children had been referred to a consultant because of a congenital or nonacquired anomaly. Abortions among anaesthetists' families were also common but more so when the mother was an anaesthetist. The anomalies were concentrated particularly in the central nervous system and musculoskeletal system, and girls were worst affected. The mean birth weights were below normal, more so when the mothers were anaesthetists. Girls with anomalies were partic

Unintended Perinatal Health Consequences Associated With a Swedish Family Policy.

IMPORTANCE: The 1980 and 1986 Swedish so-called speed premium policies aimed at protecting parents' income-based parental leave benefits for birth intervals shorter than 24 and 30 months, respectively, but indirectly encouraged shorter birth spacing and childbearing at older ages, both risk factors for several perinatal health outcomes. Whether those policy changes are associated with perinatal health remains unknown. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association between the 1980 and 1986 speed premium policies and perinatal health outcomes. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cross-sectional s

The association between family adversity and youth mental health outcomes.

BACKGROUND: The association between family adversity and young people's mental health outcomes in communities that experience economic instability has not been well explored in the South African context. Furthermore, the overtime interaction between resilience factors, family adversity, and young people's psychological functioning in African settings, like South Africa, is under-investigated. PURPOSE: This study investigates the relationship between family adversity and conduct problems and depression at two-time points in a sample of youths in two South African communities stressed by their

Contributions of family physicians to health care services in Nigeria.

In Nigeria, family physicians are doctors with specialised training to manage a broad range of clinical conditions and pathologies when they first present, considering the psychosocial, economic, cultural and environmental context of the individual and his or her family. In Nigeria, family physicians may be found at district hospitals but are more likely to be located at tertiary health care facilities, where their roles in medical education, research and clinical services cannot be overemphasised. Many patients present to tertiary facilities with primary-care problems, bypassing primary and s

Men, family-role quality, job-role quality, and physical health.

The relationship between the quality of men's family roles, as spouse and as parent, and the quality of men's job role, on the one hand, and their reports of physical symptoms, on the other, was examined in men drawn from a random sample of 300 dual-earner couples. The main effect of marital-role quality (i.e., rewards and concerns) on physical health was estimated, as was the Marital-Role Quality x Job-Role Quality interaction effect. With respect to the parent role, the effect of both parent-role occupancy and parent-role quality was estimated. After controlling for job-role quality, it was

Odisha tribal family health survey: methods, tools, and protocols for a comprehensive health assessment survey.

Tribal or indigenous communities have unique health behaviors, challenges, and inequities that nationally representative surveys cannot document. Odisha has one of India's largest and most diverse tribal populations, constituting more than a fifth of the state. State and tribe-specific health data generation is recommended in India's national roadmap of tribal health. The Odisha tribal family health survey (OTFHS) aims to describe and compare the health status of tribal communities in the state of Odisha and to estimate the prevalence of key maternal-child health indicators and chronic disease

Age at Menarche and Cardiometabolic Health: A Sibling Analysis in the Scottish Family Health Study.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies of age at menarche and cardiometabolic health report conflicting findings, and only a few could account for childhood characteristics. We aimed to estimate the associations of age at menarche with cardiovascular risk factors in unrelated women and within sister groups, under the assumption that within-sibship estimates will be better adjusted for shared genetics and early life environment. METHODS AND RESULTS: Our study included 7770 women, from 5984 sibships, participating in the GS:SFHS (Generation Scotland: Scottish Family Health Study). We used fixed- and betw

Mental health conditions are associated with increased health care utilization among urban family medicine patients.

PURPOSE: To assess the relationship between the presence of a mental health condition and health care utilization among family medicine patients. METHODS: We used the Patient Health Questionnaire plus a posttraumatic stress disorder screen to measure 6 common mental health conditions. In a sample of 367 patients recruited from 3 urban family medicine practices affiliated with Boston University Medical Center, we measured self-reported health care utilization of primary care provider visits, emergency department visits, nonpsychiatric hospitalizations, and outpatient mental health visits. Family social support during incarceration: implications for health upon release.

Incarceration is associated with adverse physical and mental health that are often brought to light during reentry into the community, particularly in the immediate period following release. Social support, specifically from family members, has been identified as a key protective factor that may promote health and reintegration success among formerly incarcerated individuals. However, less is known about how specific types of family support-emotional and instrumental-relate to health outcomes following release from incarceration. The current study uses data from 517 individuals incarcerated in

Health insurance expansion and family violence prevention: A conceptual framework.

Family violence, including child maltreatment (CM) and intimate partner violence (IPV), plagues far too many American families, particularly those in low-income communities. CM and IPV are intertwined and impose a significant emotional, health and financial burden on children and families and an economic burden on our country. Although these and other forms of violence are influenced by shared risk factors across the socioecological spectrum, prevention efforts typically intervene on a single type of violence at a microsystem level via individual or family intervention. Research is needed to i
